A coup in Madagascar after popular anger

Hello and welcome to the Ekō newsletter. Today we’re covering Madagascar, Gaza, whales, and deforestation.

Island nation change

Gen Z-led protests in Madagascar opened the door for the toppling of the country’s government by military coup, the latest development in the island nation’s contentious politics.

President Andry Rajoelina left the country on Tuesday after being pushed out by the army and a vote to impeach in the nation’s parliament. But it was the weeks of protest, led by youth, that forced the hand of the country’s institutions.

Now, with a military-led government in charge, the immediate future of Madagascar is uncertain. International mining interests and the vanilla industry, in particular, are watching to see what will become of their contracts in the nation.

Anger has been growing in Madagascar for some time. A 15% reciprocal tariff put in place by the US hit an already beleaguered economy in a country where more than two-thirds of the population live in poverty. And reports of abuses, violations, and pollution in the mining sector only increased the unrest.

In other news

Forest crisis

A new Forest Declaration Assessment report, part of an annual publication documenting the 145-country signed Forest Declaration in 2021, finds that the world is “off track on halting and reversing deforestation by 2030.”

According to the report, deforestation is continuing at or about the same levels it was since the beginning of the decade, a sobering—and depressing—state of affairs. Not only are nations mainly failing to address the crisis, they’re not putting enough money and energy behind what efforts are in place.

Uneasy peace

The ceasefire is in effect and Gazans are returning to what’s left of their homes—and trying to rebuild.

That will be hard. Aid distribution is already hitting snags due to the utter destruction of local infrastructure in the territory and Israel is now cutting aid over what it sees as insufficient actions on the part of Hamas to return hostages.

“If we don’t see more access, we will just be maintaining the status quo at best. We won’t see a reduction in looting and we will see more displacement as people move to where there is more aid.”—Katy Crosby, Mercy Corps senior director of policy and advocacy

Stuck cetaceans

Large whale entanglements in US waters are on the rise, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said.

In 2024, there were 95 confirmed entanglements, a 48% rise from 2023. The vast majority, 77, were humpback whales. People tried to help the animals, responding to 37 incidents and freeing 11 whales. One whale died and four self-released.

In a move that could make things worse for our sea creature friends, Republicans in the US Congress are trying to weaken the 1972 Marine Mammal Protection Act. The effort is supported by fishing interests on both coasts.

Here’s your campaign of the day

It’s not every day you have the opportunity to institute a global billionaire tax—but for South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, the opportunity is here. Ramaphosa is the current president of the G20 and could put such a tax at the top of the group’s agenda.

Just a 2% global tax could raise $250 billion a year, a life-changing amount of money for people around the world.

President Ramaphosa—the time is now!
