Women have faced higher rates of pandemic job loss than men and are dealing with increased levels of unpaid care and domestic work amid school closures and lockdown orders, the International Labor Organization and the World Health Organization note as the world marks International Women's Day. "The pandemic is worsening the already existing deep inequalities facing women and girls, erasing years of progress towards gender equality," writes United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who notes women are also enduring spikes in domestic violence, trafficking, exploitation and early marriage.

President Hassan Rouhani of Iran met with Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney -- serving as a facilitator of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action for the United Nations Security Council -- on Sunday to discuss efforts to revive the 2015 agreement. President Rouhani said his country is prepared to reduce its nuclear activity and abide by limits set out in the deal as soon as US sanctions against it are lifted.

Governments must not use the deployment of coronavirus vaccines as a reason to ease up on pandemic restrictions and safety measures or they will risk additional waves of the virus, World Health Organization emergencies chief Dr. Mike Ryan says. WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says the mass trauma caused by the pandemic exceeds that of the second World War, and officials say recovery efforts must address mental health effects that will last for years.

The World Health Organization's COVAX initiative delivered 20 million doses of coronavirus vaccine to authorities in 20 countries during its first week of operations, WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says. The organization will deliver an additional 14.4 million doses in 31 more countries this week, the WHO chief says.

An additional 10 million child marriages could take place in the coming decade as a result of the ongoing pandemic, reversing gains against the practice made in recent years, UNICEF says. Nankali Maksud, UNICEF's senior advisor for Prevention of Harmful Practices, says pandemic school closures, economic impacts and disruptions to programs aimed at preventing child marriage will drive the increase.

Security forces in Myanmar continue to escalate violence against anti-coup protesters, opening fire on a protest in Kachin State and killing two people.
