Students’ Olympiad in Soil Science at the Agricultural University of Georgia



On 24 April 2013, the Agricultural University of Georgia organized an
Olympiad in soil science “Soil – Heritage of the Nation”.



Georgia is characterized by diverse natural conditions. Here, one can find
almost all major soil types. Hence, Georgia is called “an open-air soil
museum”.



Thus, the knowledge of soils and their investigation are of great
significance.



The aim of the Olympiad was to popularize soil science among students.



The initiator of the Olympiad was the Mikheil Sabashvili Institute of Soil
Science, Agrochemistry and Melioration of the Agricultural University of
Georgia.



The Olympiad was opened with a welcome speech from the Rector of the
Agricultural University of Georgia, Mr. Lasha Gotsiridze.



Students of different universities across the country participated in the
Olympiad – Kutaisi Akaki Tsereteli State University, Batumi Shota Rustaveli
State University, Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, Telavi Iakob
Gogebashvili State University and Agricultural University of Georgia.



The first prize winners of the Olympiad are: Irakli Dekanoidze, Mariam
Tchumbadze, Sakro Bzekalava, Gogita Lepsaia (Kutaisi Akaki Tsereteli State
University), Kristine Lomaia, Gela Dzirkvadze (Batumi Shota Rustaveli State
University), Giorgi Khomasuridze, Giorgi Guliashvili, Demetre Modebadze
(Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University), Guram Sulkhanishvili (Telavi
Iakob Gogebashvili State University) and Guram Karkashidze, Ani
Kadagishvili, Noe Patrekashvili, Nino Dvali (Agricultural University of
Georgia).



All prize winners received Certificates of Honor and a Soil Map of Georgia
in the scale of 1 : 500 000.
