23 March - World Meteorological Day

March 23 is World Meteorological Day. This date is connected with entry into
force Convention on the Foundation of World Meteorological Organization
(WMO).

The theme chosen for 2013 is “Watching the weather to protect life and
property”, also celebrating 50 Years of the World Weather Watch.

The main component of World Weather Watch is global monitoring system of
meteorological parameters in the Earth, Sea and Space. The system unites 191
WMO member countries, including Georgia.

Nowadays, meteorological observations are provided in more than 100,000
terrestrial stations, in over 7000 marine and in thousands of stationary and
drifting scientific stations. In these points atmospheric pressure, wind
speed and direction, air temperature and humidity, amount of sediment,
visually is defined cloud’s type, quantity, visibility, weather and etc. are
measured.

World Meteorological Organization aim is to reduce the loss of life and
property caused by disasters and other catastrophic events related to
weather, climate and water, as well as to advance the universal goal of
sustainable development and safeguard the environment and the climate for
present and future generations.

World Meteorological Day 2013 is an occasion to highlight the work that
National Meteorological and Hydrological Services accomplish 24 hours a day,
365 days a year to watch the weather and protect life and property. This
celebration will also contribute to underline the benefits of further
investing in meteorological and hydrological infrastructures, the importance
of global cooperation and the urgency to raise capacities for the provision
of better weather and climate services for all those individuals,
communities and nations who need them the most.

Weather extremes have a tremendous impact on our planet’s 7 billion-strong
population, and that impact will increase as economies develop and the
global population grows to reach the 9.3 billion mark expected in around
2050. Between 1980 and 2007, nearly 7,500 natural disasters took the lives
of over 2 million people and produced economic losses estimated at over US$
1.2 trillion. More than 70 percent of the casualties and almost 80 percent
of the economic losses were caused by weather-, climate- or water-related
hazards such as tropical cyclones and storm surges, droughts, floods or
related disease epidemics and insect infestations. Over time, there has been
a significant reduction in the loss of life thanks to early warnings issued
by National Meteorological and Hydrological Services. Economic losses have,
however, increased.

History of Meteo observation in Georgia

Georgia’s Hydro-Meteorological Service has existed for over 160 years.
During this period, its legal status has been changed several times.
Currently, it is a department of the National Environmental Agency of the
Ministry of Environment Protection of Georgia.

Department of Hydrometeorology runs regular observations, determines
weather, hydrological forecasts and warnings about possible
hydro-meteorological disasters: floods, mudflows, snow avalanches, storms,
strong winds, hail, drought and extremely high and low atmospheric
temperature, icy roads and etc. within the country’s territory.

Georgia is independently involved in the global system of exchanging
meteorological data. WMO is provided with such data from different countries
including 14 meteorological stations in Georgia. Global weather forecasts
are formed on this basis and disseminated through CNN and other channels.
According to additional information collected within a particular country
and experience of local authorities, more accurate national forecasts are
elaborated.
