Opening Ceremony of the Project for the Arrangement of Alazani River Gabions
in Akhmeta District within the Framework of

“Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects”

provided by the Government of Japan



At 12:00 p.m., on April 19, 2013, the Opening Ceremony will be held in
Village Birkiani of Akhmeta District concerning the Project for the
Arrangement of Alazani River Gabions in Akhmeta District, which has been
implemented within the framework of the “Grant Assistance for Grassroots
Human Security Projects” of the Government of Japan. The Ceremony will be
attended by Mr. Hiroki Tokunaga, Charge d'Affaires ad interim,
representatives of local authority and members of related organizations.



The Grant Contract of the above-mentioned project was concluded on September
11, 2012 between the Embassy of Japan and NGO Kakheti. The aim of this
project is to protect several villages situated along the Alazani River in
the Akhmeta District from frequent floods. It is expected that 3,000
households in the villages of Duisi Village, Jokola and Birkiani would
benefit from this project. The budget scale of this project is USD 121,822.



The “Grant Assistance for Grassroots and Human Security Projects” (GGP)
provides assistance to relatively small projects implemented by medical
institutions, as well as NGOs and aims at improving the living standards of
the Georgian people. It applies to projects in the field of public health,
education, social protection, environment and poverty reduction. Since
1998, one hundred and twenty-three GGP projects have been financed in
Georgia totaling USD 11,372,911. The size of Japan’s Official Development
Assistance to Georgia has reached over USD 362 million, covering a wide
spectrum of areas, such as improvement of economic infrastructure,
agricultural and social sectors, culture and human resource development.



Representatives of Mass Media are invited to participate in the opening
ceremony.
