GEF-NGO Network is an independent network of civil society organisations
which acts as a bridge between civil society and the Global Environment
Facility (GEF) - the largest global financing mechanism for the environment.




Greetings from GEF-NGO Network. We are pleased to present here the first
quarter of 2013 newsletter to keep you updated on the GEF Network
activities, news from the Network regions and Indigenous Peoples Focal
Points, news on GEF and upcoming events. Happy reading.




News from Central Focal Point





First Meeting of GEF 6 Replenishment, 3-4 March 2013, Paris, France

The First Meeting of the GEF 6 Replenishment was held in Paris, France from
the 3-4 March 2013. The GEF-NGO Network was represented by Faizal Parish,
the Central Focal Point and Guenter Mitlacher, the RFP for Europe region.
The meetings was interactive and reviewed the future long-term strategy for
GEF and the programme directions as well as agreed on the replenishment
process over the nexxt 12 months. The Network presented 4 statements to the

Global Environment Centre re-elected as the Central Focal Point

We are pleased to announce that Global Environment Centre based in Malaysia
whose first term as the Central Focal Point expires on 18 May 2013 was
re-elected for the post for another 4-year term till May 2017. You can view

Meeting of the Friends of CBD, 11-12 February 2013

This was a first informal meeting of CBD experts convened by the CBD
Secretariat to advance CBD Strategic Plan implementation. The meeting took
place in Bossey, Switzerland (11-12 February 2013) and gathered nearly fifty
government officials, stakeholders and representatives of international
organizations including the GEF NGO Network expert of the GEF-6 Needs
Assessment Group. Read more

Update on Network Membership

The Network welcomed 11 new members to the Network in February 2013. Click
here for the list of the new members

consists of 509 members. The Network is currently undertaking membership
renewal for members who are more than 3 years old. This is to facilitate
updating of members status and database.

South East Asia - Weathering the Weather in Cambodia

Save the Earth, a network NGO in Cambodia helped a vulnerable community to
reduce disaster risks by implementing a micro-insurance loan programme. The
programme is designed to reduce the disaster risks by supporting the
community's livelihoods. Read more

Asia - Expanded Constituency Workshop (ECW) and CSO meeting in Siem Reap,
Cambodia

The ECW for the South Asia, North East Asia and South East Asia took place
in Siem Reap, Cambodia from 19-21 March 2013. The participants were from 13
countries, i.e. Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, India, Lao, Malaysia,
Maldives, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam. A 1-day

Caribbean - Community Engagement Open Day

The Caribbean Forest Conservation Association (CFCA)/GEF NGO Network
Regional Focal Point for the Caribbean took part in the University of the
West Indies (UWI) Community Engagement Open Day on February 22nd, 2013. The
event had sought to promote greater awareness and engagement with the Civil
Society NGO community and the University. Hundreds of students, staff and
guest of the University visited the GEF booth display and were educated and
made more aware of the work of the GEF Network.

West Africa - Expanded Constituency Workshop (ECW) in Dakar, Senegal

The Expanded Constituency Workshop for West Africa took place in Dakar,
Senegal from 12-14 March 2013. Some one hundred plus delegates representing
10 countries in the Sahel region, including GEF agencies and CSO groups

Risk Assessment and Mapping to Climate Change

CENN Caucasus, in cooperation with Mercy Corps, has conducted the mapping
and assessment of human and ecosystem climate change vulnerabilities and
risks in the target Kura trans-boundary areas and communities.

Georgia's National Action Programme to Combat Desertification

A project on alignment of national action programme with 10-year strategy to
combat desertification is being implemented by REC Caucasus in Georgia. The
project is initiated by the Ministry of Environment of Georgia and supported

News from Indigenous Peoples



African Development Bank set to introduce Indigenous Peoples standards for
the first time

29 April, 2013 - The African Development Bank (AfDB) is nearing completion
of its new set of environmental and social safeguard policies. The AfDB is
currently the only multilateral development bank without a standalone
safeguard policy on indigenous peoples, and the new environmental and social
safeguards are not expected to change this. This is despite strong advocacy
from indigenous peoples' organisations in Africa, and despite the existing
jurisprudence and standards on indigenous rights in the African human rights

ISTANBUL, Turkey, April 9, 2013 - In the 10th session of the United Nations
Forum on Forests, Global Environment Facility (GEF) CEO and Chairperson
Naoko Ishii announced that financial support from the GEF for forest
management programs has reached the half a billion US Dollar mark in the

Upcoming GEF Council-CSO Consultation Meeting during 44th GEF Council
Meeting, Washington DC, 17 June 2013

The next meeting of the GEF Council consultation with representatives of
civil society organizations will be held in Washington D.C., on Monday, June
17, 2013. The meeting will be followed by the 44th Council meeting from June
18 to 20, 2013. The application of CSO representatives seeking financial
assistance to attend consultations has been closed. However, registration of
self sponsored participants will be open until June 7, 2013. All interested

About the GEF NGO Network

The GEF-NGO Network comprises nearly 500 member organizations with
experience and expertise in GEFs areas of work from all regions around the
world. It is governed by a global Coordination Committee composed of
representatives of elected Regional Focal Point organisations from 16
geographic regions and three Indigenous Peoples Focal Points from Asia,
Africa and Latin America. The day-to-day work of the Network is coordinated
by a Central Focal Point (CFP) elected from among the Coordination Committee
members. It has been recognised by the GEF Council and GEF Secretariat as a
