Vienna public transport network expands to reach 40,000 more people
Vienna's U2 metro station is being prolonged and will travel to Seestadt

Vienna (pte015/04.04.2013/09:52) - Vienna's U2 metro station is being
prolonged by 4.2 kilometres and will travel all the way to Seestadt in
Aspern from October 5 this year.

The work, which will cost 360 million Euros, includes building new stations
and will see the 17-kilometre long U2 line become the second longest metro
line in Vienna after the U6. One in two U2 metros will operate on the whole
line to Seestadt.

A further 68 million Euros are being invested in building ten new local
train stations and adding a 4.6 kilometre stretch to the number 26
Strassenbahn (local train) line which will continue onto the
Hausfelderstrasse metro station.

Dix bus lines will start operating on new lines at the same date (October 5)
in a bid to facilitate access to metro stations. All 26A buses will drive to
Gross Enzersdorf and the 85A bus line will connect the Rautenweg with the
Hausfelderstrasse metro station. The new number 95A bus will operate between
Biberhaufen and the Aspern metro station via Donauspital (hospital),
Erzherzog-Karl-Strasse and Hirschstetten.

Some 40,000 people living in neighbouring areas will benefit from the
improved metro, bus and local train connections. The councillor in charge of
finance for Vienna Renate Brauner (socialist party) said: "The Donaustadt
area of Vienna is the fastest developing district of Vienna. That's why
we're also investing considerably in public transport links."

Indeed, the councillor for the Donaustadt district predicted an easier
day-to-day life through considerably reduced travel times. The extension of
the U2 line is due to be the catalyst for the development of the Aspern
Seestadt area. The first residential buildings are already planned for 2014.
The Swiss mechanical engineering firm Hoerbiger Holding AG is said to be the
first big investor in the project and intend to invest 45 million Euros in
developing Seestadt.

The U2 line will also continue south onto Schwarzenbergplatz, Rennweg,
Eurogate St. Marx, Arsenal and the Gudrunstraße near the new central train
station. However, there is no concrete timeframe set for the works and the
transport companies have said arrangements will be concluded in 2019 at the
earliest.

The U1 metro line will also be expanded to the south and to Oberlaa. Five
new stations will be built to this effect.
