Watershed Management

The USAID Program Integrated Natural Resources Management in Watersheds of
Georgia (INRMW-Georgia), implemented by the GLOWS’ Consortium under the
leadership of Florida International University (FIU) provided a regional
platform for the South Caucasus Conference on Sustainability and Watershed
Management on 3-4 June in Tbilisi. The event was organized in close
cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources
Protection of Georgia and USAID. The Regional Conference hosted about 100
stakeholders, including high and mid-level decision makers as well as
representatives of donor and non-governmental organizations, academic
institutions, business communities, and the GLOWS program world-wide team.

The Regional Conference was opened by Ms Khatuna Gogaladze, Minister of
Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia, Mr. Richard

and Director of the FIU Representative Office in Georgia.

High and mid-level officials from various Georgian Ministries, as well as
representatives from Armenia and Azerbaijan took an active part in
discussing the importance of watershed management, inter-agency and
trans-boundary cooperation towards management of watershed resources,
existing enabling circumstances and future plans.

The Regional Conference was followed by the GLOWS Directors’ meeting that
took place at the Lopota Lake Resort on 5-7 June. The GLOWS/INRMW-Georgia
program was presented by all consortium member-organizations headed by Ms
Mariam Shotadze, Country Program Director, GLOWS Consortium management from
Florida: Mr. Luis Salas - Associate Vice President, Florida International
University, Ms Maria Donoso - Director, FIU GLOWS, Mr. Ryan Stoa - Deputy
Director, FIU GLOWS, Mr. Michael McClain from UNESCO-IHE, Mr. Peter Lochery,
Director, CARE Water Team, and directors of GLOWS-implemented programs
participated in the meeting. The GLOWS Directors’ meeting was attended by
Mr. Richard Volk, Water Adviser from the Bureau for Economic Growth,
Education and Environment, Water Office of USAID Washington and Ms Mariam
Ubilava, Program Development Specialist, Energy and Environment Office,
USAID Georgia.

Participants visited the sites of the INRMW-Georgia Program small grants
projects implemented by one of the GLOWS Consortium members, CARE
International: Kistauri Drinking Water Supply System, Ruispiri Storm Water
Drainage System, Upper and Lower Alvani Irrigation Systems, and also became
acquainted with EcoClubs located in the Upper Alazani Watershed Pilot Area.

Strategies for improving cross-cutting issues: capacity building, gender
equality, and youth were high on the agenda of the meeting. The GLOWS
Directors held an intensive discussion on the sustainability component of
the programs, challenges and achievements based on the lessons learned and
best practices.
