CENN within the scope of the project Climate Change Adaptation and Natural
Disaster Mitigation (CCADM), supported by USAID, in cooperation with the
Department of Forest and Wildlife of LEPL Natural Resources Agency (NRA),
procured and handed over 171 panel traps with bait to fight against the
harmful impact of the European spruce bark beetle (ips typographus) in the
Borjomi forest. The goal of this pilot project is the mitigation of the
harmful impact of the spread of the insects in Samtskhe-Javakheti Region.

Epidemic spreading periods of the European spruce bark beetle significantly
affect the ecological balance of the forest and its ecosystem. Insect
epidemics and their impact on spruce (withering) began in the 1940’s. The
same impact on pine and fir trees is a relatively recent event. The Georgian
Agrarian Institute conducted a research for the Agency of Natural Resources
within the territory of the Forest Fund of the Samtskhe-Javakheti region to
assess the condition of the forest, find out the reason for the withering of
the trees and elaborate relevant recommendations.

According to the conclusions of the study, the intensive withering of spruce
forests is due to mass reproduction of the European spruce bark beetle - ips
typographus. The insect affects the tree trunk and branches and can cause
severe destruction of the entire spruce forest cover. Massive spreading of
the European spruce bark beetle is considered a biological indicator, which
begins its intensive development when, due to certain factors, spruce
forests on large territories become weak. The massive spreading of this
insect should be explained by an increased frequency of droughts in Georgia
and the unsatisfactory phyto-sanitary condition of the spruce forest.

Based on the findings and recommendations of the research report, CENN, in
cooperation with the Forest and Wildlife Department of the NRA, selected a
model of the panel trap with bait to curb the spread of ips typographus in
the Borjomi forest. An information leaflet was developed on the use of the
trap. The panel traps selected for the pilot project are different from
commonly used multi-funnel traps – the selected model is considered more
efficient, cheaper and easier to assemble and transport.

Beginning from May 15, the Department of Forest and Wildlife of the NRA, in
cooperation with CENN, plans to begin the distribution of traps together
with the local communities by engaging them in the installation and
servicing of the insect traps; thus giving the local population an
opportunity for additional income and strengthening their feeling of
ownership towards the forest.
