that's one way to think about it, but my advice is designed toward a 3-
page essay. a well-organized 3 pages will score higher than any number
of pages of too much summary/quote but not enough explanation. see
also this rather cartoonish representation of an important point on
the proper balance between researched support and analysis

Prof. O'Conell:

I printed out my essay 2 you made comments/suggestions on, so if I do
my best to make corrections/changes then I should be able to produce a
better paper, (I think for me it is all about being focused).

And if I follow your suggestions on (NOTES ON REVISING ESSAY2), and
the short story, I may be able to turn in a good paper. I think it is
a matter of reading and getting use to words like, "vehicle" and
"tenor" , understanding them and the reading of Dorian Gray. Also,
Timon of Athens is teaching me and I guess that is what this is all
about!!!
Joe (so I am not giving up)

The Road to Ruin is Paved with Credit Cards

The average American household with at least one credit card carries
nearly $10,700 and growing in credit card debt, (Nilson Report, April
2009) making it pertinent to consider what has led to the current
American economic state and where our financial future is headed. In
his 2009 book, The Limits of Power, Andrew Bacevich traces back the
American citizen's profligate spending habits to Ronald Reagan, who
the author criticizes as guilty of instilling in Americans the belief
“...Credit has no limits, and the bills will never come due.” (p. 36)
Certainly as the crowd lined up to purchase the latest model of the
iphone on it's release date, fills the street and wraps around the
Apple store, it appears there is much truth in this accusation. The
economic downturn has rendered the unemployment rate into the
millions, yet consumers continue to fall prey to marketing ads that
the latest trends are lifestyle necessities. Buying on credit to meet
these “needs” perpetuates the downward spiral of overwhelming debt
from which it has become increasingly difficult for consumers to
extricate themselves. Credit card companies exacerbate the problem
with deceptive credit practices, and victimize consumers who are then
“...slammed with rising interest and hidden fees, which have become
the industry norm...” (Dickler, 2008). The Unites States government
has attempted to propose solutions towards recovery from reckless
citizen spending and abusive credit card company practices, such as
seen in the recently signed Credit CARD Act of 2009 (Maloney), which
has the potential of limiting the amount of credit extended towards
consumers dependent upon factors of ability to pay, while also
demanding fair practices from the credit card companies that will
enable consumers to pay off their debt within reasonable guidelines.
Bacevich contends that “... Americans are no longer masters of their
own fate.” (p. 17), yet he neglects a fundamental American belief that
America is the land of opportunity where any individual can create
their own future. This belief led to the rise of American power and
can surely raise America out of this consumer crisis. However,
citizens must make wise choices for higher quality lifestyles through
frugal consumption, and government must create and enforce regulations
which protect its nation's citizens, rather than simply condoning the
abusive practices of large companies. Together, citizens and
government will forge a pathway towards a better America with a
brighter future.
“The ethic of self-gratification has firmly entrenched itself as the
defining feature of the American way of life.” (Bacevich 2009, p. 16)
Indeed, the pressure to accumulate material goods in order to achieve
and maintain the appearance of a desired social class, has driven
consumerism to be America's national pastime. Buying the newest,
biggest, and best, has become an all-consuming need in itself.
Billions of dollars are expended annually on product advertising, with
the primary objective of convincing consumers that they “need” the
goods being sold. Moreover, as David Suzuki points out in his
eartheasy article, Consumer Culture is No Accident, “An endless market
is created by introducing rapid obsolescence... And with
disposability...” (2009). American consumers are deceived by the idea
that the failure to acquire the most current and fashionable material
goods will somehow submit them to inferiority, disregarding the
perfectly functional, relatively new, material goods already piled up
in their homes. Consumers are equally deluded by the belief that
absolving feelings of insecurity frequently requires a good dose of
retail therapy. As evidenced in the indebting vicious addiction of
buying to satiate the need of self-presentation, and likewise, buying
to alleviate sadness, consuming more with disregard of cost is
regarded as an acceptable, even desirable, lifestyle.
In examining the misleading “push marketing” that Americans buy into,
Benjamin Barber (2007), in an E-mail interview with U.S. News,
summarized that the problem with consumerism is that it “strives to be
everything, to occupy all our time and space... it is both
homogenizing and totalizing.” Americans submit to workaholic
behaviors, pushing for longer work hours to quantify money, and
thereby quantify possessions. Yet, the time spent working naturally
detracts from time spent engaging in an individual's personal life,
where personal health and relationships often suffer as a result. The
high cost of consumerism entails not only the financial cost of
material goods, but also exacts an emotional toll resulting in
“...increased stress, tension and dissatisfaction with overall
lifestyle.” (Gray, 2006). In order to achieve a balance between
professional and personal agendas, Americans must now “Think as a
citizen as well as a consumer.” (Barber, 2007). Citizens should
contemplate the common interests of family and community to reveal
those things essential in life; things that often can not be bought,
but rather, acquired through creativity and human connection.
It is necessary to consider the possibility that if working hard
enough to earn the money required to purchase whatever desired lavish
product were enough of a simple means to an end, consumerism may not
be such a grand-scale problem. Unfortunately, consumers possess the
tenacity for buying beyond their means, rationalizing that the product
is essential in fulfilling their lives. However, expending more money
than can be afforded would be extremely difficult without the purchase
power provided through credit cards. Prior to the current economic
recession, obtaining multiple credit cards with considerable maximum
spending limits was exceptionally easy. Pre-approved credit card
offers flood the average household mailbox, requiring little more than
a signature to accept the card; Mastercard/ Visa card representatives
“recruit” eager, young college students with the assurance the only
way to build good credit is to possess a credit card. Lost along the
way is the tiny fine print that supposedly spells out every
regulation, condition, limitation, penalty, etc., that accompanies the
credit card which few consumers read, and even fewer comprehend.
Manipulative credit card companies have preyed upon consumer ignorance
and consumer blunders, by ballooning attractively low introductory
rates to unconscionably high rates, leaving consumers drowning in
rapidly soaring bad debt. Only after being spurred by the exposure of
failed mortgage lenders with similarly deceitful practices, has the
United States government chosen to act in the form of signing into law
the Credit CARD Act of 2009 (Maloney). This new law strives to
fulfill President Obama promise, expressed at his May 14, 2009, New
Mexico townhall meeting, “No more fine print, no more confusing terms,
no more hiding the truth. We're going to require clarity and
transparency from now on.” With the intent to establish regulations
that are common to all credit card companies, this law will require
these companies to adhere to fair practices towards consumers, so that
individuals will then be provided a better opportunity at achieving
debt reduction and elimination. Cultivating restraint within credit
card companies, however, is only a partial, though important step
towards debt relief and economic recovery, as responsibility weighs
heavily with the consumer as well as large companies. Journalist
Laura Rowley advises “To overcome money envy, we need to... identify
what we love and value most, and make our money obey our
values.” (2006)
Reaching far back into the history of America, the concept of having
more is always better, has been embedded in American culture,
persuading citizens and presidents alike, that the acquisition of
additional property, possessions, power, money, etc., is the road to
happiness. Unfortunately, the money has run out, yet the driving
desire to consume and possess has not subsided alongside.
Nevertheless, America's fate is not beyond our control. Americans
have far more choices than sitting on the sidelines as helpless
observers. Citizens must be active participants in their communities,
seeking to nourish spiritual, emotional, creative, and ethical needs,
among others; while also choosing to wisely meet true consumer
needs. Government must act in the better interest of Main Street
rather than Wall Street, and fulfill their fundamental obligation of
representing the American citizens. These changes will lead the
American nation on a course towards a better quality of life. In the
words of cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead, “Never doubt that a
small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world.
Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.”

Essay 2
After the end of World War Two, America experienced an economic boom.
The American people began to enjoy a way of life that was seemingly
inaccessible to previous generations. According to Andrew Bacevich in
his book The Limits of Power (2009), post-World-War-Two-America became
the most powerful nation economically and militarily. America was
making money and the government encouraged their citizens to spend.
Since then, America has not stopped spending. Even in current times,
while America is going through a recession, the American people still
spend beyond their limits. And in this “crisis of profligacy” as
Bacevich calls it, America needs to reexamine their lifestyle choices
and values. While feeding their hunger for material wealth, Americans
are also notorious for another type of consumption: over eating. Many
Americans make poor food choices, thus becoming obese and a target for
many associated health problems. Being overweight or obese may also
produce negative effects on the environment.
The American government has mistakenly advised the American people to
continue spending in order to boost the economy. However, most
American households usually owe more money than they are making and
either have none or very little money stashed away in savings.
American citizens should focus more on saving their money, learning
how to budget properly, paying off their debts and learning how to
live within their means. Popular money magazine Forbes published an
article on their website Forbes.com written by a professor of business
at the University of West Virginia named Ron Wilcox. He believes that
consumer and government spending would be a bad idea due to the risk
of inflation. His theory is that American households cannot invest and
support in government spending therefore the government must get the
money elsewhere. He states, “We would just be temporarily putting off
the real problem: dangerously low levels of household savings and
overall economic growth.” This means because this recession affects
society on a global scale many countries would be unable to lend money
to the United States, which means that the United States could
essentially print money from the treasury. However, more money in
circulation leads to inflation. While inflation can temporarily help
the economic downturn it would disproportionately affect poorer
American families. Others such as U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy
Geithner believes that this recession could in fact help America by
forcefully ensuring American citizens change their spending habits. He
hopes, “When we get through this [recession], people are going to care
less about what they make and more about what they do, what they
achieve with what they make. And that will help make this country
stronger." Were American citizens to follow this advice and keep a
watchful eye on their paycheck, America would indeed become a stronger
nation. With careful consideration on how Americans spend their money,
people could make better lifestyle choices, such as becoming
healthier.
American culture has become a culture of instant gratification
bringing the American people into an age of convenience. Today’s
average American consumer has never had to work less. This age of
convenience has also brought to the people, convenience food, or fast
food, which are usually high in fat and low in essential nutrients. An
annual report published by the Trust for America’s Health, called “F
is for Fat 2009: How Obesity Policies Are Failing in America” states
that “More than two-thirds (67%) of American adults are either
overweight or obese.” Many health disorders such as diabetes,
depression, anxiety and a shortened life span have all been connected
with being overweight. With over half of America in danger of such
health problems, no one can expect America to be a productive nation.
On May 18 2009 a Bill was introduced to the Senate. This proposed bill
is called the Obesity Prevention, Treatment, and Research Act of 2009
with its aim to create a committee dedicated to education the American
people about the dangers of overweight and obesity and of the benefits
of living a healthier lifestyle. The bill proposes the creation and
improvement of health programs in schools as well as specialized
programs in low income zones. By losing weight and gaining a healthy
lifestyle America can not only help themselves but the environment as
well.
A recent study entitled “Population adiposity and climate change” was
conducted by Phil Edwards and Ian Roberts at the Department of
Epidemiology and Population Health, London School of Hygiene &
Tropical Medicine, London, UK. They calculated and tested the direct
correlation between obesity and global warming. They theorize that
overweight and obese people are more likely to travel in vehicles than
to walk or have other means of transportation. Because they weigh down
their vehicles the car will release more carbon dioxide into the
atmosphere than would be released from another vehicle with passengers
who weigh less. A more active lifestyle can benefit people and the
earth alike, combined with fiscal responsibility America can once
again become the great nation America has always claimed itself to be.

Daisy’s Date

We laughed easily together. I almost forgot about the excess baggage
that’s been hanging off my body for… oh, all my life, really. I
watched him from across the table as he spoke animatedly about his
love for the simple life and mother earth and all that. His name is
Mark and we met online. I think I am in love with him even though this
is our first time meeting. His body is gorgeous and fit and I self
consciously wonder how he can even stand to be near me.
“Daisy,” he says my name so wonderfully, “I think we’re very
different. And yet I can’t help but think we were made for each
other.” I flash my pearly whites and giggle like a school girl. Here I
am, 26 years old, size matching my age and yet I feel ten years
younger at least. This has got to be love.
“I know what you mean! Although, I was a little self conscious at
first…” I laughed nervously, not wanting to bring attention to my size
as if he’d look me over and realize he was out with quite a hefty
catch. There was a slightly awkward pause in our conversation. He
looked at me and seemed to be considering something.
“Have you ever considered losing weight?” The question hung in the
air as if it were something tangible and heavy. When I didn’t say
anything, he smiled and continued, “I know I’m a little straight
forward and I hope you didn’t take offense. I think you’re a very
beautiful woman. You dress well, your hair is gorgeous and your smile
warms my heart, for sure, Daisy. But I asked because, honestly, I can
see myself with you for a long time. Being overweight is bad for your
health.”
“Oh Mark…” I laughed nervously, “I didn’t mean to stay silent. I
just… it’s just nobody’s ever asked me point blank like that before.
I’ve only ever considered weight loss my entire life. I guess I never
really confronted the issue. I mean, when I’m stressed, I eat, shop,
repeat. It’s like a never ending cycle. The only exercise I find
myself getting these days is when I move my arm to swipe my credit
cards.” Mark chuckled and reached across the table to take my hand.
“I can see you’re thoroughly American.” He shook his head but his
words were not unkind.
“What’s the supposed to mean?” I was a little worried by this. Did he
see me as many people around the world see Americans: Fat, therefore
lazy and weak?
“I just mean you like to eat out more than you make home cooked
meals. You’d rather buy clothes for the sake of having them rather
than for necessity. How many credit cards do you own?” He raised one
of his eyebrows at me. The number of credit cards I have can be
counted on both hands but I didn’t want to admit that to him right
away. I knew I had taken too long to answer.
“I have two credit cards. One is for shopping and one is for
emergencies only.” I couldn’t meet his eyes when I said this and we
both already knew I was lying.
“I can forgive you for lying on the first date, since I’ll admit I’m
quite smitten with you.” He patted my hand reassuringly and gave me
another perfect smile.
“Alright. I’ve got six cards. But I’m pretty sure one is maxed out
already.” I felt incredibly embarrassed. I had never felt this way
about my spending habits before.
“Wow, why do you need six cards?” It seemed to me, it was greatly put
off by this.
“Well, because of my… ahem, my size, many of my clothes hardly ever
seem to fit right. I’ll try them on at the store and they’ll fit
wonderfully. But sometimes when it comes time to wear them out in
public, they don’t fit as well.” I began ticking off their other uses
on my fingers, “ I also use them to get gas for my car, sometimes buy
myself some lunch, groceries and I use them to make a monthly donation
to the eco-friendly non-profit Gaia’s Children.” I felt proud of
myself, doing my part for Mother Earth. Global Warming worries me
immensely, especially because I sweat a lot. If the earth keeps
getting warmer, it’ll be like I’m in a sauna.
“Oh, I’m glad you care about the environment!” His face lit up. “You
know, a great way to do your part for the earth is to lose weight.” He
nodded his head vigorously.
“What? How in the world can my weight affect the environment?” I was
genuinely perplexed.
“Well for one thing, I'm sure you realize you spend a lot on fuel,
correct?” I nodded that this was the correct assumption. “The more
weight that is put on a car, the more fuel it needs to burn to zoom
about. According to some English scientists, heavy folks are
responsible for much more carbon dioxide emissions than slimmer
people. “
“I guess that does make sense. But with the economy in the dumps, I
don’t drive very many places anyway. So really, I’m using less gas
than ever!” Even though I knew he wasn’t attacking me in anyway, I
felt the need to justify my obesity and my apparent CO2 contribution.
“That’s another thing. This economy is terrible isn’t it?! Which is
why I was so surprised you have so many credit cards.” I bit my lip.
There was nothing I could say to justify that. Then it came to me.
“Yes, it’s true I have many credit cards but aren’t we supposed to be
spending as much as we can so the economy can pick itself back up?”
Now I was quite sure the ball was in my court.
“Actually, it wouldn’t help much. Do you owe against your credit more
than you bring home?” I couldn’t help but laugh. Even my own parents
were never so willing to delve into my spending habits.
“I do. I’m sure many American households are in the same boat, so to
speak.”
“Exactly, now how can Americans who, in reality have a negative
amount of money, boost the economy by spending? It’s just not
possible. I realized this a few years ago. Since then I’ve totally
changed my lifestyle.” Mark leaned in and motioned for me to lean in
as well. “Daisy, I used to be quite like you. Over a healthy weight,
under a mountain of debt, not realizing how I can truly help the earth
to make the future brighter.” He looked right into my eyes. “I see
myself in you. This is how I know that I’m in love with you already
and I want us to spend our lives happy, healthy and debt free.”
“Oh Mark!” I exclaimed. I felt as if I were in some weird fairy tale.
Here we were, sitting in a little cafe, heads together like conspiring
teens but having a much more serious conversation. We were meeting for
the first time and we were in love. “I would love to live a better
life. Now that I’ve found someone like you who is so intellectually
stimulating, I know I can change.”
“Wonderful! Let’s go back to my place and continue the discussion
there.” He hailed the waiter for the check. I began taking out my
wallet to pay with a credit card when Mark stopped me. “Sorry dear,
but I’ve got this one.” When the check came, he looked it over and
paid with cash. He winked at me. We left together and I followed him
home in my car. As I parked my car in his driveway, I saw a heavy
young woman speed walking down the street with weights in her hands.
She acknowledged Mark happily while going on her merry way.
“And who is that?” I asked, teasingly.
“She’s a client of mine. I’m so glad to see her sticking to her
workout.” He nodded approvingly as we stepped inside.
“A client? Funny, I realize now that I don’t exactly know what it is
you do.”
“I’m a debt counselor and for the past few months, I’ve also become a
motivational speaker. I had a similar conversation with her two weeks
ago, minus all the parts about love.” He smiled at me.
“I could use some counseling and motivating right now.” He laughed
and took me by the hand. We discussed my debts and assets. Then we
went into my eating habits and eventually created a nice little diet
and exercise plan. It was the best date of my entire life.
Ten years later, Mark and I have been happily married and also have
children. We teach them to put money away in savings, pay with cash
and use credit only for emergencies and occasional online shopping if
there is cash to cover. We exercise with the family every week and eat
healthier foods. I feel confident that we’ve done the best we can for
the economy, the environment and our selves.

Essay 2

English 101 , Section 1229

O’Connell

The Current U.S Consumer Culture Analysis

For the past years the so called American lifestyle has been seen as one of the most expensive styles of living. Now being in the 20th century nothing has changed, not even given the fact that we are currently living through an economical crisis and are in a never ending war. The amounts of money Americans are spending at this time are shocking to see. As the economy begins to show signs of failure the retailer’s main focus becomes the consumers. When consumption becomes the factor of economies exist then that’s when we the consumers should begin to ask ourselves; how much is too much? and begin to question if we truly need everything that we spend our money on. Our personal consumer choices have major impacts on the economy, environment and our social and spiritual lives. Given the bad economical times right now, the time for consumers to re-examine their deeply held notions that underline their American way of living is vital.

The nation’s economy without question has had major problems in the recent years. The war we are currently in has being one of the factors that has made the stock market go down. Seven years into the war in Iraq the affects of it have impacted our everyday lives. Whether we agree with the war or disagree with it, the reality is that our current economy problem is not getting solved. It is time for Americans to take control of the crisis we are in and find solutions to them. We need to begin to examine our consumptions habits and begin to think of ways to consume less for less money. In Andrew Bacevich’s 2009 Limits of Power he argues that consumers have helped create the current economical crisis we are facing at the time by the constant demand of imported merchandise. It’s no surprise that the leaders of the stock market keep on advertising new merchandise to consumers no matter what the nation’s economy status is. When World War II ended the country was bad economical shape. The stock market was suffering greatly and consumers were not buying as many goods as before. Victor Lebow a retailing analyst at the time expressed this views on the crisis ‘’Our enormously productive economy … demands that we make consumption our way of life, that we convert the buying and use of goods into rituals, that we seek our spiritual satisfaction, our ego satisfaction, in consumption…. we need things consumed, burned up, replaced, and discarded at an ever-accelerating rate.” Analyzing the current financial crisis consumers should be able to see that it is not in our best intersect to keep on spending large amounts of money on merchandise because all that is doing is encouraging stock  market leaders to keep on buying imported goods to sell to us. It’s hard to think of that the only thing that will help the current economical crisis is for consumers to change their ways of consuming goods. We live in a country that promotes consumerism and to reduce our amount of spending is something that is hard for many people to do. This country is by far one of the freest countries in the world. We as Americans have the right to make our own choices both personally and financially. During President John F. Kennedy presidencies he presented to congress the Consumer Bill of Rights which consists of six parts. The six parts consist of: The Right to be Safe, The Right to Choose Freely. They Right to be Heard, The Right to Education, and The Right to Service. All of these rights benefit consumer because they allow us to consume and feel safe doing so. Given that our country as these rights again reinforces us to spend our money freely because we are made to believe that it’s safe and helps our country. The fact is that given the present time we has consumers need to begin to change our spending habits in order for the ongoing high prices on merchandise to come to a stop. We need to begin to start saving as much money as we can and stop buying goods that are not necessary for our everyday survival.

Economical status is one of the main focuses of many families and individuals. Currently the average economical class of families is middle to low class. These categories have increased in the recent years due to the down fall of the stock market. More and more individuals are finding themselves stuck economically. Due to the current war our economy as suffered a lot and has made many consumer’s go bankrupted or not be able to keep on supporting their families as they did before the economical crisis began. When goods are well made eventually they will become saturated as is the case today with our market. When merchandise becomes popular the demand for them increases and the consumer’s money goes out to the makers. We are currently living in a society that is use to and wants to live in luxury but with that comes unnecessary products that we really do not need. Products have become social mechanism allowing people to relate and identify themselves through them. Utilizing products as symbols to judge socioeconomic status and social stratification is not healthy but is sadly occurring in our society. Our need to have the best things in life is causing us to continue living in this never ending economical crisis. In Oscar Wilde 1891 novel The Picture of Dorian Gray the main character a young, charming, wealthy man named Dorian Gray expresses the social pressure to do whatever it takes to remain in the high social class circler. His consist need to be in control of his life is expressed very well throughout the novel. Like Dorian Gray we consumers today what to buy the best protects available and maintain a luxuries lifestyle and social class level. Given the present time the idea that through protects our social economical status will be revealed is fails. It si not hard to see  that our economy is currently facing some serious problems so by us continuing to buy expensive merchandise for the means to show off to society it not smart. Bacevich says, ‘’ Freedom has become confused with appetite, turning American traditional quest of liberty into an obsession with consumption, the never ending search for more.’’ Consumers need to reexamine what their values and goals are and need to learn when to say ‘’No’’ to the retailers. We have lost ourselves in the consuming market and have ignored the outcomes of our careless consuming actions.

Creating consumer goods are the markets main goal but due to the increasing demand of them the affects of it are not only showing in the economy but the earth as well. The current U.S consumer culture as had an affect on the economy as well as the war, but one element that both share is the concern for the environment. Allen Kanner and Mary Gomes write in The All Consuming Self  “The purchase of a new product, especially a ‘big ticket’ item such as a car or computer, typically produces an immediate surge of pleasure and achievement and often confers status and recognition upon the owner. Yet as the novelty wears off, the emptiness threatens to return. The standard consumer solution is to focus on the next promising purchase.” Products are made using materials that come from the earth and when the products are not good anymore they will return to the earth, but now in the form of toxic waste. It is this waste the one that will keep on dirtying our plant. The demand for more and more products will end up consuming our plant and will affect nature. We need to think about the well being of our planet because if we don’t we will end up living in a plant filled with waste that will end up harming us.

Reducing our everyday shopping is the solution for the current economical crisis. We need to become smart shoppers and reexamine what products are essential for our survival and which ones are not. By us doing this the rest will fall into place. Our consumer culture views need to change and we need to begin to think of the long term affects our actions will have both economically and environmentally. Bacevich believes that our main focus right now should be global warming and not the ongoing seven year war in Iraq. We need to question the government and express our views on bettering the country as a whole.

Shopping until You Lose the meaning of Life

Everywhere you look you see the affect the war in Iraq is having on our nation but yet you have those individuals who don’t seem to care about the current economical crisis we are living. I attend Emerson High School and am in my senior year. I am planning to attend USC as a political major once I graduate this June. All my life my parents have worked very hard to pervade a safe home and food on our table no matter what. I live in Upper New York were the average family earns more than what an average family in American earns in a years. Most of the residents in this part of the city own big houses with pools and personal gyms. My family is not the topical family that lives in this part of town but somehow we have being able to afford and be respected. My grandparents from my mother’s side of the family gave my parents the house we currently live in. I have being living in this house since I can remember so really I have never known anything else but the neighborhood I live in. Both my parents come from hard working families that taught them values that really no one in my neighborhood has. My mother is a teacher and my father is a chief. They both have what you would call an average job but not where I live. The people around here most are lawyers or mangers of some major company in the world that make double what my parents make. Although I don’t have the ability to spend all the money I want I cannot complain because I have two parents who have taught me to value life for its beauty not its merchandise.

Going to a private school has allowed me see what money can do to people. All my friends come from rich families and have the luxury to go on vacation anywhere they wish too and shop until they down. Although my parents are well off finically they would never allow me to live the life style my friends do. Both my brother and I were raised viewing the world as a network that consists of many working parts that form a big part which is the country we live in. Growing with peers that were not raised with the same views and values that I was has made it difficult at times for me to be able to relate to them.

My circler of close friend consist of three girls May, Mia, and June. We all have known each other since pre-school so we have grown to become very close. I love my friends but at times I feel like we are living in two different worlds. May and Mia are twin sisters and come from a family of lawyers. Their parents both are well known lawyers in the city and are known for their outrages spending habits. One summer they throw a pool party and turned their whole backyard into a topical island with Hawaiian dancers and traditional Hawaiian food that had been specially sent from Hawaiian from one of the best Hawaiian Chief’s. It’s no surprise that May and Mia love spending money and never think twist about how much something cost. Unlike me I am always looking at prices tags and sales. June also loves spending money. Her father died when she was very young so she lives with her mother who is a successful Wedding Planner. One year she was working with President Bush’s daughter and could not tell anyone she was doing so for security reasons but June could not keep the secret and that is how I know about it. June’s favorite past time is going to fashion square and dropping these hundred dollar bills like there is no tomorrow. So by now you can see the differences between my friend’s life styles and mines. I love my friends because they are great girls but sometimes I feel bad and worried for them because given the current economical crisis our country is facing their luxuries life styles will end up leaving them with nothing in the future.

With prom coming some my girls and I have to start looking for prom dresses. Prom in my school has become a minnie high social party. One that rich kids come to and show off their best dresses and tuxes. This weekend my friends and I will be going downtown to meet with a designer to look for our prom dresses. All summer I have being dreaming about how my prom dress was going to look and now the time has finally come for me to get my dream dress that I being dreaming of for the longest. In school all the girl’s were talking about for the week was about what prom dress they were going to get and with all the prom talk I forget to ask my date if we were going to go to prom on his car or car pool with my friends. During my fourth period I asked Joe my date how we were going to get to prom and he told me that he was going to ask his dad for his 2009 BMW for that night. Everything was going great for prom all I had to worry about now was finding my dress.

That day when I got home my mother and father were talking in the dining room. I walked into where they were at and updated them with my prom information. As I told my parents my plans my father stopped me and asked me to sit down. I knew that something was wrong because both my mother and father looked stressed and not themselves. As I sat down I asked my father what was going on. He said ‘’ Ana this afternoon the Captain of our brothers unit called us and told us that your brother was killed in battle last night. His body is on the way home right now.’’ It was at this time that all my happiness came falling down like bricks falling from the sky hundred miles per hour. ‘’My brother is dead. No! It can’t be, Jason can’t be dead you’re playing dad, you have to.’’ My brother and I were three years apart and he had being in Iraq for two years now. I really missed him a lot and always tried calling him whenever I could. My brother was in the Navy and joined it after 9/11 happened. He loved this country and wanted to give his service to it. The last time I show him was before he went to Iraq. I remember his big smile and funny walk he always did to make me laugh. All those happy memories with my brother were now just memories of the past because now I am never going to be able to experience anymore fun times with him. That whole night I could not sleep. Just thinking about what my brothers last days were like in Iraq were haunting me. Now with prom coming up soon I really didn’t feel like going to it anymore but I knew that my brother would want me to still go because it was something that I had been planning for years.

When Saturday came Mia called me and told me that May, June and herself were going to be picking me up at my house around one o’clock. I then got up and got ready. When I got downstairs to the kitchen my parents were talking about paying the monthly bills. I said Good Morning and then told my father that the girls were going to be picking me up soon to go downtown and meet the designer that we were going to get our dresses from. My father then asked me what designer we were going to meet. I then told him it was Mary Miller. My father is a man whose main focus in life is to save as must money as he can without us having to live uncomfortably, so for me planning  to meet with one of New York’s well known designers was not going to be ok in him mind. ‘’ Ok, now Ana you know that your mother and I are hard working parents who want the best for our children, but now do you really think that it is ok to give a designer hundreds of dollars just for a prom dress that you are only going to wear once. Don’t you think that you could find a beautiful dress somewhere else  that will not cost hundreds of dollars.’’ “But dad this is thy Mary Miller. She designs one of a kind dresses and  Mia, May and June all are getting there dresses from her new spring collection. So why can’t?’’ ‘’ Ana I love you but I am not going to allow you to throw away money that we have worked for so you can give it to some rich designer. Now I’ll tell you something you can go with your friends to this Millers designer person and tomorrow your mother can take you to the mall and you can look for your prom dress there I’m sure you will find a dress you will love, trust me. Plus Ana you are a beautiful girl and no matter what kind of dress you wear for prom you are going to look like a princess just like her brother always called you a little princess.’’ ‘’ I guess dad.’’ When the girls arrived I did not tell them about the conversation my dad and I had early so I just acted normal and told them that my mother and I were going to come again tomorrow to  the store to discuss the buying the right dress for me. Like expected Mia’s and May’s dresses came up to be $1500 each and June’s dress was about $ 1200 not to far from Mia’s and May’s. As I heard then talking to the designer about the detailing of on the dresses I began to think to myself about the outrages amount these girls were spending on these prom dresses. It was stocking for me to see the totals on the girls accounts and to think that they were just getting the dresses not shoes or jewelry just the dress was a reality check for me. It was then when I starting to see what my father was talking about. It makes sense to try to save money by finding other ways of getting things you want. I know that at the mall I am going to find a princess like dress that will blow everyone’s mind away.

The next day my mother and I went to the fashion square mall on the lookout for my prom dress. I told my mother all about the outrages prices the girl’s dresses were. She could not believe the prices the dresses cost my friends. She told me ‘’ Now Ana you saw those Miller designer dresses but now you are going to see even prettier dresses then the ones you saw yesterday for less here at the mall.’’ The first store we walked into was Shelly’s one of my favorite stores. I love their formal dresses and the best part is that their prices are reasonable something my parents love. I tried on about six dresses until I found my dream dress. Although it was not identical to my drawing it was pretty close. I told my mother ‘’ Mom! I found the dress.’’ This dress was everything I wanted for a prom dress and now it was mine to wear to prom.             When I got home I tried on the dress again and showed my father. He loved it and when he found out that it only cost us $250 he loved it even more.

Prom night came and I was so happy. I had the perfect date and most importantly the perfect dress now all there was to do was show off my dress to my whole school. When we got to the hotel were prom was going to be held at everyone was commenting on my dress. I have to say that I was the only girls who was not wearing a custom made designer dress in the whole prom, but who cares I still looked great. When the night ended I was so glad that I attended prom even after mooring my brother lost. I had a great night and I know that my brother was happy for me. After prom the weeks for graduation came very fast. June 24th came it was gradation day. My parents were so proud of me for all my hard work in school. They gave me my I Phone I had being wanted for the longest time as my graduation present. Mia and May both got new 2009 BMW’s and June got a ten week vacation package to Paris as graduation gifts from their parents.  My friends by far got way more expensive presents than me but sadly that we be the last ones they get in a long time. My mother heard from one of her close friends that Mia’s and May’s parents are losing their jobs due to the economical crisis and June’s mother’s is getting laid off for lack of events.

Now thinking back at the luxuries life styles those girls lived it does not come to a shock to know that they have out bought themselves with the outrages shopping habits they had. My parents were right in not allowing me to spend hundreds of dollars on clothes. My three friends spent more than one thousand dollars on their prom dresses, dresses that they are never going to be able to wear again. All that money they spend on their dresses is now gone. I feel sorry for my friends but I really can’t do anything to help them because they have placed themselves in the situation they are in.

Seeing how money talks as made me see that social status is not everything. I am lucky to be able to say that my family is doing well economically even given the bad economical times. I am going to college and know that my parents are going to be able pay for it because of their good saving habits. We live in a country were money is seen as something that gives you happiness and power in society but that it not really the case. My family is a working family who does not spend more than what they need. Unlike my three friends families we don’t shop for things that are not necessary and as a result saves up money. People need to start thinking of what will become of them in the future and until they do so our economy will never get better. My brother a son and great family member was killed protecting this country and to say we are not going to change our spending habits is wrong.  We are in war and our economy is in really bad shape. We have hundreds of American soldiers dying every week in war and no one is doing anything to stop it. By us consumer not changing our spending habits our countries problems are not going to get better. It is time for us Americans to start examining ourselves because if we don’t do this now we will end up shopping until we end up losing ourselves and the true meaning of live which is it nature beauty.

Focusing on the American Economy
Americans are tied to the larger global community militarily,
while being unable to handle it economically. The roots of this
problem were suggested by Bacevich as the American motive to expand
rather than to liberate. Rapid expansion caused America to become
dependent on cheap foreign oil. As a result, they were ultimately
driven to the Middle East as stabilization of that region ensured a
stable source of foreign oil. This has led to a series of American
involvement in Middle East conflicts that has seemingly tied America
permanently to that region. The foundation for this situation can be
traced back to American profligacy of living in abundance while
refusing to change their lifestyle. As America was drawn into yet
another conflict with the Middle East, they began spending large
quantities of money while ignoring more pressing concerns at home,
such as the American people’s dependence on credit, and a failing
housing market. Had congress been more concerned with domestic
economic problems, perhaps the economy would not be in such poor
condition. As Bacevich suggests, Americans had a shift in values
(Bacevich, 2009, page 33). Despite all the rhetoric of Americans
wanting to spread democracy and safety, Bacevich was correct in
stating that the ultimate motive was profit. The United States
government must return to an era of the traditional American values
of
hard work, and abandon its quest for self-indulgence. This may start
a chain reaction that leads America out of the current economic
problem.
As far back as the 1970’s, some foresaw the problems that
America would endure by being entangled with foreign interests.
Bacevich pointed to the “Crisis of Confidence” speech delivered by
President Carter, during the energy crisis. Almost prophetically,
Carter urged Americans to avoid trying to seek an advantage over
other
nations, as that would ultimately commit Americans to conflict
(Bacevich, 2009, page 33). He correctly realized that a new American
value of spending and living in luxury would cause trouble. However,
this was an unpopular position, and Americans gravitated towards his
successor, Ronald Reagan, a president that laughed off Carter’s
warnings. Reagan encouraged Americans to spend, and in the process,
as Bacevich suggested, America became tied to the Middle East and
their cheap oil. Bacevich argues that the ultimate legacy of the
Reagan administration was to establish a down payment on future
involvement in the Middle East (Bacevich, 2009, page 44). A recent
congressional bill written by Representative King on March 4th, 2009,
designed to give recognition to the current “surge strategy” in Iraq,
certainly re-enforces that notion. Over twenty years after Carter’s
administration, America is still dealing with conflicts in the Middle
East. In fact, every president who followed Carter has dealt with a
conflict in that region.
Bacevich argued that the cost of the Vietnam War destabilized
the American economy. In an eerie similar fashion, the conflict with
Iraq can be seen as having done the same. In 2007, the United States
command in Baghdad was burning through $3 billion per week (Bacevich,
2009, page 64). The only word to describe that, in light of the
current domestic economic failures is, criminal. American profligacy
was a double edged sword in that it encouraged Americans to spend
money they did not have, while committing America to a war that would
spend an ungodly amount. According to a CNN report, there were 9,600
US soldiers in Afghanistan in 2003. That number has climbed to
36,000
in 2009.
If America is to escape the current political and economic
problems, it must change. It must reverse the effect profligacy had,
and the current president, Obama, may be leading us down that path.
Americans are turning to a more frugal lifestyle amid the economic
crisis. At the same time, the United States should withdraw its
military presence from the Middle East, a process that has already
begun. As George Berkin pointed out in his article titled, Iraq and
Vietnam, this was a celebrated move in Iraq. At the same time,
Americans must remove the conditions that caused terrorism to strike
America. As Florence Gallez points out in her article titled, The
Current State of US-Middle East Relations, Obama has extended his
hand
to the Muslim World, and perhaps this is the first step towards
cooperation, as opposed to domination and conflict.
America is tied to a larger global community, but as Bacevich
suggested, domination is not the answer. Cooperation, a small step
taken by Obama, may help achieve the goal of creating an economically
responsible America. It would give the United States the resources
and chance to focus on the domestic problems that America is
currently
facing. America is on the verge of change, economically becoming
more
responsible, while returning to a lifestyle that separates Americans
from conflicts.

Short Story: Knee Deep In Debt
Harry could not believe it. He had just heard the ding sound
three days ago – three days. Looking down at his gauge, Harry
confirmed what his car was trying to indicate. He needed to refuel.
“God, it’s like someone drilled a hole into my gas tank,” he said
shaking his head. He continued to drive down the main street of his
suburban neighborhood in his fully loaded Sports Utility Vehicle
scanning for a gas station.
He spotted a 76 station but kept driving past it when he saw
the
sign, “$3.49 9/10 cents.” He did not even give it a second thought as
it had become almost second nature by now to pass gas stations with
ridiculous prices. “Why did I ever buy this behemoth? It’s not like
I’m loading a ton of cargo around! What could have compelled me to
buy this car?” Even as he angrily asked himself, he knew the answer.
As a low level manager at his firm, he needed to maintain an image.
When people saw him, Harry wanted them to believe he was successful.
He was not rich, but he wanted people to perceive him as being well
off. In actuality, he was mimicking what he saw around the
neighborhood. Not flamboyant, but he wanted to fit in, and maintain
his appearance.
After driving another five minutes, he saw an Arco about three
blocks down. He could not make out the sign just yet, but he knew
Arco had lower gas prices than most other stations. As he got
closer,
he shook his head again upon seeing the sign posted, “$3.45 9/10
cents.” Breathing a sigh of surrender, he pulled in, knowing he was
not going to find gas today any cheaper than this.
The pump stations were already filled, mostly with other SUV’s.
“Great, this is going to take a while,” Harry thought to himself as
he
put his behemoth to neutral. All the cars at the station were nice
looking and clean kept. Customers either stood by their cars fixated
on the pump reader, literally watching their money being sucked away
on the digital monitor. Others were inside the mart, buying drinks
and lotto tickets.
Getting bored, and with nothing to do but wait his turn, Harry
turned on the radio. He was not into music. In fact, he rarely
bought a CD and all his presets were either set to traffic news or
talk radio. The car filled with the monotone sounds of an announcer,
“…bring the death toll in Afghanistan to 23 this month. This has
been
the deadliest month for American soldiers since the initial fighting
had ceased. The insurgents…” Harry turned it off. “Are we still
over there? My God, it’s been over 7 years! I mean, I know we have
troops in Iraq, but Afghanistan? I thought that was over.” Of
course, deep down inside, Harry believed it. He knew all too well
why
American troops were still there. Despite the talks of democracy and
leading the people to freedom, he believed the real purpose was to
create a foreign market friendly to American trade. “A lot of good
that’s doing… $3.45 my…” Harry muttered expletives to himself as the
cars in front of him pulled away.
The routine was always the same. He shut the engine off,
pulled
the lever that popped the gas tank open, and in one slick motion he
opened the door, stepped out, while pulling his wallet out. Harry
hopped down back to earth from his SUV. Unconsciously he sighed
while
opening his wallet to find there was no cash. He reached for credit
card and swiped it into the machine. Harry verified his zip code and
began to fuel his behemoth. Given the size of his vehicle’s tank, it
usually took close to eight whole minutes to complete the process.
Watching the numbers quickly add up, Harry cringed at the
thought of seeing next month’s credit card statement. Like most
people Harry knew, he put everything on his credit card. He could
not
pinpoint exactly when his credit cards got out of hand, but at some
point after college, he stopped using cash, and went almost
exclusively with his plastic pals. It was easier. He was given
promotions, low credit rates, and increased credit lines. At one
point it was all money he had, but he still preferred credit. Now he
was tens of thousands of dollars in debt and had no money, just
credit
and debt. It was a vicious cycle. To add insult to injury, ever
since the economy tanked, all of his credit companies raised their
interest rates, and Harry could not see the end in sight.
Oddly, he only thought like this when he pumped gas. Harry
used
his plastic pals for everything, from food and clothes to
entertainment. Maybe it was the constant reminder, the-up-to-the-
second update on how much money he lost since he swiped his card into
the pump that did it. The pump clicked to a stop, Harry recapped his
gas tank, and took a final look at the monitor.
“$103.55!”
He pushed the button indicating he would indeed like a receipt. He
got back into his car, turned the engine on, and pulled out of the
station. He looked down at his gas gauge, and seeing the needle
pointing to a full tank, Harry drove off, knowing that he would not
have to worry about it for another three days.

Essay 2
The Consequences of Profligacy
Who wants to admit complete defeat, practically no one, that is
why the U.S. is in such a crisis. With the long history of demanding
and maintaining the title, “Superpower”, the United States has been
strenuously surviving by any means necessary, these includes the
practice of profligacy as well as the age-old strategy of divide and
conquer. In the book, Limits of Power, Bacevich, argues through an
immense variety of research that gives fact to the United States
regarding, “ The restless search for a buck and the ruthless
elimination of anyone – or anything – standing in the way of doing so
have long been central to the American character. (Bacevich, pg.17)
This statement goes back to cover all the previous wars that were a
result of the U.S. character defects of gluttony, deception, and
their
reputation of such power and centralism. War happens when a group of
people or an organization perceives the benefits that can be obtained
to be greater than the cost. In at least seven theories behind the
existence of warfare, the Trade off Analysis Theory gives support to
the unfortunate cost of lives and countless millions of dollars. This
can happen for a variety of reasons.
The first is to protect national pride by preventing the loss
of
territory. World War II in which the U.S. fought to save their island
between Japan and the Southeast Asia was the most massive war in
history that killed ultimately 72 Million and lasted more or less
seven continuous years. Financially, the entire globe lost roughly
billions dollars.
The second is to protect the livelihood by preventing the loss
of resources or declaring independence. The U.S entered the First
World War in fear of the Germans policy of unrestricted submarine
warfare, which seriously threatens the Americans commercial shipping.
Germany defeated, had to surrender their territory to the Versailles
as well as their money as compensation for the damage done.
The final purpose of war is to inflict punishment on the
“wrongdoer” especially when one country is stronger than the other
and
can effectively deal out the punisment. Unfortunately the punishment
is dealt out on us citizens. Bacevich, argues that “A political
elite
preoccupied with the governance of empire paid little attention to
protecting the United States itself.” The 911 incident was stated to
be a result of ninteen hijackers directed by Osama B. Laden, took
over
four commercial jets evaded the air defense system hit the world
trade
center that collapsed because of so-called structural failure. The
911
commision found no warnings, while government failures prevented
adequate defense. This also known as the 911 myth. In the
Ducumentarytube.com, Peter suggest that the 911 is an inside job
staged by criminal elements within the U.S. Government. However, in
todays articles Osama B. Laden either denies or admitts to this
tragedy which ironically puts Americans in a state of confusion.
Leaving society to believe the media which repatiously cries
terriorist threat. Reputition is the mother of retention. This in
turn
gives the government the oppurtunity to evade Iran and Afganistan in
retaliation to disguise the motive of conquering their oil for
financial gain.
On April 2, 2007, Ron Paul of the Texas Straight Talk Column,
(The 2008 Federal Budget) confesses his experience involving the
federal budget, “When I first came to congress in 1976, the federal
government spent only about $300 billion. A CENTRAL BANK, is the
entity responsible for the monetary policy of a country or of a group
of member states for over one hundred years. It’s responsibility is
to
maintain the stability of the national currency and money supply
including controlled subsidized-loan interest rates. Given this
information, how possible is it that the U.S. with a direct link to
the supply of money can become a state of oppression? Let us take a
sharp look at the states budget cuts. So far, Arnold Schwarzenegger
has not given one explanation as to why the United States underpaid
and therefore has to cut back on school grants that definitely
interferes with the present and future generations’ education, the
counties welfare, and living assistants. For the most part Fortune
500
companies are either going out of business or has reluctantly
combined
with other companies to save a pretty penny.
Ron Paul goes on to say, “Congress proposes spending roughly
$3 trillion in 2008. About one-third of this $3 trillion is so-called
discretionary spending.” Enough said, the answer goes back to the
high
price of war in purchasing these weapons of mass destruction to
intimidate other countries so that the U.S. can become richer. It was
not until Obama was elected that the lower class is somewhat
recognized. In his changes to the rights of women to be paid equal to
men in which was against the law. As well as his encouragement to
send
all single parents (preferably Mothers) back to school to earn a BA
degree All projections about revenues, tax rates, and spending in the
future are nothing more than empty promises”. David Limbaugh’s,
beltway Arrogance and Blind Faith, explains how House of
Representatives ideology tells them that any means justify the ends
of
achieving their liberal Utopia – even means (such as literally
bankrupting federal budgets that logically guarantee it can never be
achieved”. In the Bill, (“H.RES.94, Title) Urging the Secretary of
the
Treasury to take certain actions under the Emergency Economic
Stabilization Act of 2008 to protect the interests of the taxpayer,
and for other purposes”. Twelve representatives cosponsored this bill
presented on (01/27/09). It urges the Secretary of the treasury to
halt the purchase of a luxury corporate jet by Citigroup or require
Citigroup to reimburse the Treasury for its cost. Requires Troubled
Assets Relief Program (TARP) recipients to spend tax dollars to help
homeowners, small businesses, and others hurt by the recession; and
place further restrictions on TARP recipients to limit executive
compensation and other benefits. Unfortunately, this bill has not
passed but sent to the House of Representatives for negotiation.
Bacevich analysis is correct, and the above political
approaches
give description to how the “United States relies on diplomacy, hard
bargaining, bluster, chicanery, intimidation, or naked
coercion.” (Bacevich pg. 20) We citizens give power to people that
are
claiming to be in high-class financial status. Bernard Madoff a
prime
example of how billions of dollars are literally wasted based on poor
decisions, he was a former financier currently convicted for the
investment of almost a $65 billion scandal, which placed a large
amount of people in debt and in my opinion played a part in this
recession. On the other hand, the death of Michael Jackson is an
excellent example of profligacy he too has made history more so in
death according to our pockets that will have to pay for his farewell
ceremony. Profligacy is constant and around us everyday. In addition
to the state issuing, IOU’s Governor Swarzenegger has requested
Proposition 58, the legislature has 45 days to pass and send a bill
or
bills to the Governor's desk addressing the state's budget crisis. If
the 45 days pass and the legislature have not passed a bill or bills
to address the problem, they cannot adjourn or act on other bills
until the state's fiscal emergency is addressed. This proposition 58
is a request for a $6 billion loan in which will drastically put the
state deeper in debt.

Essay 2: Outline and Half-done Draft

Countless books and articles have been written, in the last few
decades, about the dysfunctional American health care system. Hundreds
of bills have been introduced in the US Congress to address healthcare
reform; all of them have miserably failed. The Clintons unsuccessfully
tried in the 90’s. George W. Bush’s administration ignored the issue
all together of course. Our new president is scrambling against the
powerful Private Insurance and other special interest lobbies.
Representative Walberg introduced last year H.R. 5955: making health
care more affordable Act of 2008. Michael L. Millenson of The
Washington Post wrote an article on June 8th, 2008, untitled, Want
Universal Health Care? The Operative Word Is ‘Care’, in which he
argues that we do not have Universal health care in America simply
because of the selfishness of the well-to-do Americans. Robyn Blummer
of the St. Petersburg Times wrote a column on May 24th, 2009,
untitled, Universal Health Care Goes Too Far, in which she argued that
universal health care reform will raise taxes and that government run
health care will be a catastrophe. I believe that the health care mess
is directly linked to A. Andrew Bacevich’s complaint in The Limits of
Power …“centered on consumption and individual autonomy, the exercise
of freedom is contributing to the gradual erosion of our national
power…” page 9. Most Americans’ profligacy and insistence on freedom
of choice in health care has made the American health care system the
most inefficient system in the world. About a quarter of the American
population lack proper access to healthcare even though we spend 17.6
% of GDP in health care. France spends about 9% of their GDP yet all
French citizens are covered. I agree with representative Walberg that
we need Universal Health Care

Robyn Blummer in her article Universal Health Care Goes Too Far,
states, “…Government-mandated procedures will likely reduce your
doctor’s flexibility…” Many Americans share Ms. Blummer’s opinion.
This is clearly Americans’ entitlement addiction. We want infinite
choices, but the truth is that we cannot afford it and moreover there
is no need for unlimited choices. It’s been proven that our health
care system is the most wasteful in the world. Clearly, the well-to-do
Americans spend monstrous amounts of wealth for their health care, but
millions are left with nothing; thousands die every year
unnecessarily, an estimated 18,000.
Ms. Blummer in her article also argues, “… there is not a single
government agency or division that runs efficiently, not even
Medicare. So do we really want government dictating our health care…”
On the surface she makes a very good point. But it’s been proven that
mandated government run health care is only the system that will cut
down costs and ensure that all citizens are covered. Government run
health care is the only system that has a proven track record. Many
countries around the world, Germany, England, France, Canada, which
has a federal government system like ours, guarantee health care to
all their people. Author Nancy McKenzie in her book, Beyond Crisis,
published in 1994 by the Penguin Group, states that “… health analysts
are interested in the single-payer model because of its international
track record in solving the problem of health access.” Page 660. So
the issue isn’t that government run health care doesn’t work, the
issue is that our government has proven itself incapable of running
anything successfully; we must make sure that we elected people who
are competent. This argument is analogous to A. Bacevich’s argument “…
[history will] not view with favor an electorate that delivers power
to the hands of leaders unable to envision any alternative to
perpetual war.” Page 10.
Michael L. Millenson of The Washington Post in his article Want
Universal Health Care? The Operative Word Is ‘Care’, dated June 8th,
2008, writes “… If a lack of health insurance were truly a white
middle-class crisis, then conservatives and liberals would long ago
have joined together, carved out a compromise and done something…” I
totally agree with this assessment. It is the selfishness of many
Americans that has blocked our much needed health care reform. This
selfishness is also analogous to Andrew Bacevich’s argument in The
Limits of Power, “…history will not judge kindly a people who find
nothing amiss in the prospect of endless armed conflict so long as
they themselves are spared the effects…” It is the same selfishness
that makes it okay for us to wage wars around the world, killing
thousands of innocent civilians and brave young Americans, for oil
that makes it also okay for us not give a damn of the millions of our
countrymen who lack access to health care.

The current situation of the American healthcare system is simply
shameful. Though the United States of America has greatly advanced
medical science, it is the only country among developed nations that
still hasn’t achieved comprehensive health services for all citizens.
The truth is that even the citizens of many third world countries have
access to better health care than the bottom third of the American
nations. I support Representative Walberg’s bill H.R. 5955: making
health care more affordable Act of 2008, which would make universal
health care the law. I also support the president and most democrat
senators and representatives’ desire to create a public insurance
option for American. The current system is clearly inefficient and
broken. Health care is an essential need just like police and fire
fighting it needs to be guaranteed for all citizens.

American Disgrace

Steve McNamara hung up the phone and slumped on his lazy-boy chair.
He stared intensely at the empty wall. He had just received the most
shocking news of his life.

Two years earlier his dear wife Nancy had been diagnosed with breast
cancer. It was indeed the most difficult time of their lives. He had
been recently laid off from GMC. He had lost his health care
insurance. But he felt so thankful that he had purchased private
insurance soon there after.
Life threw another curb ball at Steve, his new insurance company
argued that Nancy’s breast cancer was a pre-existing condition. Steve
could vividly remember his quarrels with the insurance company’s
representatives.
“What do you mean her cancer is a pre-existing condition. She was
just diagnosed.,” screeched Steve to Mr. Anderson, a representative of
Your Neighborhood Insurance, Inc. Steve had stormed to the
headquarters of the Insurance company and to Mr. Anderson’s office
after their short heated phone conversation.
“Mr. McNamara, as the doctor said Nancy’s had cancer for about a
year. You signed up with us a month ago. Her cancer is clearly a pre-
existing condition,” retorted Mr. Anderson.
“Are you implying that we failed to disclose here disease? She was
just diagnosed. How can you be so casual about this? What do you
suggest that I do?” screamed Steve.
“I am sorry.”
“Do not bullshit me? You are not sorry. This is unacceptable. I will
sue, if you don‘t fulfill your obligation of paying for my wife’s
medical bills. We paid all our premiums on time.”
Steve strode out of the office. He indeed contacted a lawyer friend
of his. The lawyer called Your Neighborhood Insurance, Inc, and
convinced them to pay Nancy’s medical bills.

But that day, Steve had just been informed on the phone that Your
Neighborhood Insurance, Inc. had suddenly filled for bankruptcy. This
meant that he had no way for paying for Nancy’s mastectomy. The
doctors had made it very clear that the only way to save Nancy’s life
was to remove her breasts. The chemotherapy wouldn’t do it. What are
they to do? Nancy’s medical bills were estimated at over $180,000. How
can this be? He looked up at the ceiling and wondered how he could
have been so unlucky.
How can something like this happen in the richest country in the
world? Richest country in the history of the world? Steve recalled
his friend Sophia McIntyre. After her accident, she was left crippled
and was facing a lifetime on a wheelchair, when her insurance money
ran out. She resorted to traveling to Cuba, communist Cuba, a third
world country, where the doctors fixed up her legs. Why was America’s
healthcare system so broken?
Steve recalled how he had campaigned for Bill Clinton in the 90’s in
the hopes that his administration would reform America’s broken health
care system. But the powerfully private insurance lobbies defeated the
Clinton’s attempts.
Steve attempted to get up and attend to his wife. But had never felt
so physical and mentally exhausted. He rose at last. It became clear
to him what he had to do, not unlike his friend Sophia McIntyre, was
to move with his wife to a foreign country, Canada, that guaranteed
the most basic of necessities, health care.

Critical Analysis of the Oil War

In Andrew Bacevich’s 2008 The Limits of Power, he has analyzed the
emergence of America as a great power since its foundation in 1776
till the present disturbing scenario. He has described critically the
stages through which America and its great statesmen have passed with
a mission ‘not to liberate but to expand’ (Bacevich, p 20), whether it
was Louisiana purchase, intervention in World War II, sending U.S.
forces to Korea and Vietnam or latest to Iraq and Afghanistan. America
emerged as super power not only politically but also economically
after the World War II. America was responsible for more than half of
the world exports immediately after the war. But with expansion came
the abundance and freedom which resulted in ‘Empire of
Consumption’ (Bacevich, p29) giving rise to America as a society of
consumers. By 1950, America had started importing oil for its
increasing needs which grew day by day. The increased oil imports and
the war in Vietnam resulted in trade imbalance against U.S. The budget
deficit began to grow with the wars, expanding government machinery
and changes in foreign policy which involved America in various small
and large scale wars all over the globe. With increasing demand of oil
and it’s greed, control over Persian Gulf became an essential target
which ultimately led America to the Islamic world of Iraq and
Afghanistan.. Bacevich rightly puts these facts together in his
extraordinary book, pointing to oil resources among various other
factors responsible for the present situation of U.S. whether
economic, social or political. Although there are various causes
responsible for Iraq War, one surfaces in all of them- Oil. “America’s
interest in the middle east grew exponentially after World War II
because of oil. The Middle East was serving as a pipeline for British
and French empires prior to the war but the U.S. quickly came to
dominate the petroleum resources of the region” (Buzzanco, 2002). U.S.
greed for petroleum is evident from the facts that by 1944 American
corporations controlled over 40% of Middle East oil reserves and by
1955 were producing over 50% of oil from the region and providing
Europe with over 90% of its oil imports. Further, more recently,
“Critics say Bush’s intend in Iraq has more to do with its vast
petroleum resources than with its arsenal” (The Seattle Times, 2003).
Iraq has world’s second largest proven oil reserves and U.S. has
world’s greatest thirst for oil. As demand for oil at home increased
to 60% of national requirement, the Bush administration thought Iraq
as easy prey for petrol. The general view at that time was that if
easy petrol may be supplied from Iraq, the dwindling budget deficit,
which is because of the huge petrol import, could be settled. But as
we all know now the events which took place were totally different to
the ground realities. Iraq war is the longest fought war after the
Vietnam War and costliest after the World War II. Further presently
“The only way the U.S. can maintain control over Iraqi oil industry is
to remain in Iraq as a permanent occupying military dictatorship”
(Williams, 2007). U.S. forces were to withdraw from Iraq by 30th June
2009 according to a pact signed by Iraqi Government and U.S. At
present approximately 1,34,000 troops are stationed in Iraq and Obama
administration has made it clear that it has no intention to withdraw
its troops before financial year 2010. Instead of the monetary waste
on waging a never ending war and at the cost of young American lives
the country may start looking for the alternatives to oil resources
for example non conventional energy resources ,bio-fuel etc..

There are many legislations and bills introduced in the U.S. Senate
and House of Representatives and not all of them became law. After
going through few of them, the following congressional bill has been
selected as field of research:

Kucinich, Rep , 2008, July 31.Oil for Iraq Liberation Act of 2008 to
prohibit certain activities relating to the petroleum resources of
Iraq , and for other purposes.
This bill should be supported because it prohibits U.S. based oil
companies from owning, financing or controlling the petroleum
resources of Iraq. The bill came after Bush declared that he would
like the U.S. to have the ability to control Iraq’s oil. Kucinich, Rep
who introduced the bill with six co-sponsors expressed his desire to
‘Support the Iraqi desire to keep its oil revenue’ and reject Bush’s
logic that Iraqi oil is necessary to protect national security. It
correctly states that Middle East have chosen for decades to
nationalize their oil resources and this is their sovereign right and
U.S. must support this. The bill is in favor of any country’s
sovereignty and looks at Iraq’s sovereignty as its own. It also shows
dual policy of U.S. which on one hand always states that it wants to
save sovereignty of all countries and on the other directly attacks
Iraq’s sovereignty by controlling their oil resources and not letting
them to nationalize them. The US policy could be linked to the British
policy of “Carrot & Stick” which they had adopted during their
colonial rule across the globe. The bill seems to have great appeal
and prevents U.S. intervention in Iraq and gives Iraq, the full rights
to control and make decisions on its own. Bush’s open declaration
increased doubts that Iraq war was result of U.S. interest in Iraq,
particularly in petroleum. Petroleum is a natural resource and Iraqi
people have their constitutional right over it as U.S. citizens have
rights over their natural resources.

Bill openly shows the interest of U.S. in Iraqi oil and that American
interest will be hurt if Iraq nationalizes its oil sector. Passing of
this bill will certainly not be in favor of U.S. oil companies.
Mentioning of ‘Hunt Oil Company’ is discouraging which is said to have
contributed millions of dollars towards the Bush Presidential Library.
The Bush administration, it seems because of its vested interests has
aggressively pressurized the Iraqi government to privatize its oil
resources.

This bill will not help the present problems of U.S. If U.S. companies
could not finance, control or own oil industries in Iraq, it will be
difficult and expensive for U.S. to get a continuous and undisturbed
supply of oil. We should look for some remedies which will serve U.S.
interests but not in clash with Iraqi government. The U.S. may sign a
treaty or a pact with Iraqi government by which U.S. oil companies may
benefit without owning Iraqi petroleum resources.

In conclusion, as rightly pointed out by Bacevich, it is the hunger
for petroleum, led by a consumer society which has brought U.S. to the
verge of a great economic recession. Bacevich and many others have
rightly pin-pointed the problem along with other probable reasons for
oil war. There are many measures like use of non-conventional
resources, bio fuel etc to overcome the problem of oil. All sorts of
non-conventional energy sources like solar, tidal, hydro, wind are in
abundance in U.S. which can be used as alternative to petroleum.
Instead of fossil fuel we should now start depending on these sources
which are with us forever. This will also help to reduce global
warming, a point mentioned by Bacevich.. Domestic production of oil
which America has in abundance is also an option. America has vast
reserves of oil and possibility of local drilling should be explored.
Wars like Iraq are expensive not only economically, but also lead to
great loss of human lives. Another possibility is to cut down personal
consumption by relying more on public transportation. Public campaign
could be launched to educate people to rely on pooling their vehicular
resources which will lead to less consumption of oil and would also
help to control global warming. We have to develop a better and
reliable public transportation system in the country, which at present
is not up to the mark in most of the cities. Emphasis should be laid
on development and use of rail transportation for long and medium
distances instead of totally relying on airways. By following the
above theory US could easily come out of the forced war on itself from
the Islamic world in general and from Iraq in particular.

Story-
An Enigma

It was a beautiful day, not only was the sun shining in the sky but it
seems also on the future of John Bentley, CEO Tank Oil Company. He had
just received news from his secretary that there may be some bidding
for oilfield in Iraq in next six months or so. And after remaining in
oil business for more than 40 years John was sure to win it as he had
won three last bids in the Middle East. John was a shrewd businessman
and knew how to get his work done and manipulate the situation. Tall
with blue sharp eyes, his presence was felt in every business meeting
or social gathering. He was not satisfied with last three bids which
he had won, but greedy enough for more.

John finished his breakfast early as he had to do a lot of work today.
He reached the office before time and proudly watched name of his
company written in front of the building in shining big copper
letters. He was also owner of this tall building

“Good morning everybody. How are you?”
John wished the staff in his crisp voice which startled everyone
except his secretary, Dave Hamilton, who knew John, was very happy at
the news of bidding.
“Dave, please come in, I have to speak to you urgently,” John
requested Dave.
“tell me about this bid business, from where you got this wonderful
news?”
“Our local agent called this morning from Iraq. He did not want to
disturb you so early in the morning. So he called me.” Dave explained.
“Let us see if the news is correct, and if it is, start working on the
project immediately.”
“Yes John, I think we should” and Dave left the office.

John thought of the three recent bids which he had got for his
company. He thought of the wrongful methods he had adopted for getting
those bids. But winning bids was like a war and everything was right
in love and war. He made a strategy in his mind for this bid also.
After two days the news was confirmed that the bids for the oilfield
will be invited next month and opened after one week.
“Dave, what do you think if we invite our local agent with the guys
looking after the bidding process to U.S. for a week’s vacation?” John
asked. Dave understood what John was thinking.
“I think it’s a great idea! We will be able to know about this
business a little bit. You don’t worry I will make all the
arrangements including funds” Dave replied and a notorious smile
played on the lips of John. Dave understood him better than anyone in
this business. And why not? Dave was with him from last fifteen years
and he paid him well for his efforts along with the commission.

After a week three persons called on John in his office.
“There is Mr. Ali to meet you with two persons from Iraq Mr. Bentley.”
His operator informed him in a very professional voice over the
intercom.
“Send them in Mary” John was excited. His plan seems to work this time
also.
“This is Afzal and this is Yusuf. They both will be looking after this
particular bid this time, John” Ali introduced.
“Thank you for your hospitality John” Afzal and Yusuf said “We will be
happy to help you if you want”
“My company should have this contract at whatever cost” John told the
visitors.

Later Dave told Ali that John was ready to pay millions of dollars if
Tank Oil Company given the contract. Ali and company would decide how
to do that. It was now the last day to apply for the bid and with the
help of Ali he was sure that his would be highest. The contract was
sure going to be his.

It was only two days before opening the bid and assigning the
contract, John received a call from Ali telling that whole of the
staff for the bid had been changed on account of some suspicion and
that he had received news that M/S ABC Company from UK was likely to
get the contract. John was aghast. No, this could not possibly happen,
he could not accept defeat. He had spent a fortune to get this
contract.
“Dave, have you heard the news?” Astonished John called his secretary
“I have spent so much on this contract and now some other company is
going to get the contract. I want details of this company.”
“I do not think that ABC is a very large company John.” Dave soothed
John” I will search for the where about of this company today. You do
not worry. May be the news is not correct at all. Have patience
John.”

That evening Dave met John and told him that ABC Company is a very
small company, but very surprisingly had the highest bid. John again
thought of some scheme and called Dave.
“We will buy most of the shares of this company’s in two days time.”
“Are you out of your senses John?” Dave was more than surprised at
John’s obsession with this contract “You know how much that may cost”
“Yes. I know. But at this point I do not want to turn back. I have
already spent a huge amount of money on this bidding. So try to buy
maximum shares of this company.”
Dave tried and bought all the shares available in the market.
Surprisingly it was more than he thought. He informed John accordingly
about the progress made.

John was now sure that his company would win the bid. But destiny had
something else in store for John. That was the D-day. John had reached
Iraq the day before. He wanted to be present at the time of opening of
the bids. 5 pm in the afternoon was fixed for that. John was never so
nervous in his life. Impatiently he spent the afternoon in his hotel.
John and Dave reached the bidding office ten minutes before 5 pm and
took their seats. John’s heart was pounding in his mouth. His sixth
sense was telling him that something was wrong but he could not figure
out. He had bribed the officer responsible and had bought the shares
of the other probable company. Nothing could be wrong, he thought. He
would get the contract for sure.

He suddenly heard the announcement being made “Ladies and Gentlemen.
We are here to open the bids for the oilfield today and sign the
contract.” One of the high officials of the company was about to
declare who had got the contract. “We had received ten bids for the
oilfield. The highest bid is from…………and the contract goes to……………..”
John could not hear the name, but was sure that it was neither Tank
Oil Company nor M/S ABC Company. Then who was it? He felt like nausea
and fainted. In his state of unconsciousness he heard the name of
Tsing Huan Oil Company from China who had got the contract ultimately.

Consumerism Leading the Way to Global Financial Crisis

Profligacy, spending extravagantly, is an existing problem that
Americans are facing now in the present. Consumerism came right with
the industrial revolution, when goods were cheaper and in abundance,
this gave way to the era of mass consumption. Before the industrial
revolution, Americans bought whatever was needed due to the scarcely
of resources, saving for a rainy day. Andrew Bacevich writes in his
book The Limits of Power that the empire of production is now the
empire of consumption. When American companies started to send their
goods or products to be manufactured and produced oversea, and
Americans began to spend more money buying back more foreign products
than what they can produce here in the United States they became
consumers instead of producers. Consuming more than what we require
has become a disastrous habit that we must change and amend by simple
living. Lisa Chamberlain, MD, MPH. Packard Children’s researcher and
clinical instructor at the medical school, talks about how effective
the “Nag Factor” is in our community. This is a study that shows that
Americans are buying their kids the latest toys and junk food as seen
on TV. By these actions Americans are teaching their kids to become
mere consumers instead of producers. Americans are used to having more
and wanting more and bigger things. For example, Sweet Sixteen
birthday parties are like weddings, kids are demanding more and more
things for their birthdays, not knowing or caring if their parents can
afford it. Parents need to teach their kids to live simple and to
appreciate what they have and work hard and save the money to be able
to buy what they need instead of want.

Benoit Duguay commented in his post called Hyperconsumption and The
Global Financial Crisis, that the satisfaction of purchasing a new and
improve product first and before others and the evanescence of
contentment procured by consumption is what has allowed excessive
consumption to rise and is one of the causes to today’s global
financial crisis. The purchase of a new product with more luxurious
characteristics to replace an older version has given way to inflation
of consumption. America’s middle class has become impoverished, worse
indebted by trying to satisfy that craving for consumption, Americans
have borrowed more money than what they can pay back, often putting
their property as collateral, resulting in loss of their homes.
Lenders not checking the ability of borrowers to pay back has also
resulted in the house market to fall. Americans need to learn how to
limit themselves on spending and to spend on what is needed and only
if they have the means to do so. Hyperconsumption needs to stop a
country that consumes more than it produces is prone to damage the
environment, contribute to global warming and to use up its
resources.

Professor George Ritzer from the University of Maryland introduced on
his paper of Hyperconsumption and Hyperdebt. A Hypercritical Analysis,
“the economy depends on hyperconsumption”. He encourages Americans to
consume in the “Cathedral of Consumption” like Disneyland, McDonalds,
Toys R US, Amazon and shopping malls an easy way for American to
consume. With this way of thinking many Americans are putting
everything that cannot be afforded on credit cards, thinking that
credit is never-ending and getting deeper into debt. Even the
Government wants the people of America to spend more to help the
Economy grow. The Treasury Secretary, Timothy Geithner presented in
his financial stability plan that securitization market is good for
economy figuring that credit rather than savings is the center to the
economic equation. Seeing anything that eases the process of lending
to be an effective economic policy, as put by Peter Schiff in his
article, Geithner’s False Assumption-Rebuilding Securitization Market
is Good for Economy. The plan calls for loans to be easier given to
consumers rather than producers. This action will put our economy at
a higher risk, thus consumers borrow to spend limited amount of money
and when producers borrow money is to invest- improving capital stock,
to expand - creating more jobs, increase productivity – helping our
economy in a better way. By burdensome regulation and shifting credit
away from producers, fewer goods and services will be produced for
consumers to buy and fewer employment opportunities provided for them
to earn money with which to buy the goods.

America is faced with national debt and assumes that it has an endless
line of credit, is now facing and trying to figure out a way of
solving such crisis. Individuals assume the same. The demand of
things is unlimited the ability to spend is not. Credit is not
created out of thin air financial institutions need money to be able
to lend money. According to Bacevich the average American level of
savings is less than zero. Americans are living from paycheck to
paycheck trying to make ends meet. Budgeting has become a difficult
task for many people as for any little change in their life can create
a financial disaster, a change in illness, job loss, less income and
inflation of prices in needed goods as gasoline. The American people
will need to change their ways of spending money, save to create a
fund to be able to have the freedom to afford having a change in their
lives, like having a new baby, buying a home and going to college.
Bacevich explains via the web in youtube.com, that Americans must face
the internal “false battle of freedom of indulgence.” When Carter
addressed it with his speech of less being more; Americans did not
want to settle for less. Americans need to go back to the thinking of
saving for a rainy day and transform the attitude of if a rainy comes
I’ll whip out my credit card. Until American culture has been
reformed, America’s fight to restore economic vitality will be a lost
cause. Saving and simple living is the way to go, saving requires a
reduction on spending, by Americans putting their savings in banks or
financial institutions creates credit funds that small businesses can
use to expand creating jobs, make capital investments and produce
goods, helping America become producer more than consumer.

Coming Home Again.

In a small dim room lit by the emanating glow of a laptop, a young
man sat typing diligently. He pauses a moment to contemplate his
work, then utters a groan of frustration. He glances down at his
Blackberry to check the time, and sighs as it reads 2:16am. His essay
for his Political Science class was due in less than 6 hours and he
was nowhere near completion. Between attending school full time and
working equally long hours at the local convenience store, David could
only study in the late night hours. He studied into the early morning,
struggling to complete class assignments, before falling into bed for
a few hours. Now, as he stared at the incoherent paper he was
writing, he gave into exhaustion, turning off the laptop and crawling
into bed. As he fell asleep, his last thoughts lingered on the
upcoming Spring Break where he might escape from his worries for a few
days.
David had not always wandered through his life in the sleep-deprived
stupor as he did now. After graduating high school near the top of
his class, he had started his freshman year at Memphis University
excited and eager to throw himself into the whole college experience.
His excellent grades had won him a full tuition scholarship, and his
parents, firmly believing in the benefits of a college education,
covered all his books and dormitory expenses. David's only financial
responsibilities were for his car and entertainment.
Enjoying the life of a college freshman unencumbered with any major
expectations other than to attend his classes and do well, David
found he had ample time to spend with friends. Together, they
frequented the movie theaters, enjoyed good meals, and a few drinks.
But after awhile, as David found himself pressured to work more and
more, his excursions with his friends became fewer, and his grades
slowly declined. He was barely passing his classes by the time Spring
Break came around.
Pulling up into the driveway leading to a lovely suburban house,
David found himself relieved to be home. He had been reluctant at
first when his mother insisted he come home for Spring Break. His
friends would be spending the week partying at a huge beach house they
had rented, and David was disappointed to be missing out on the fun.
Yet as he walked into the familiar house, he was overtaken with a
happiness to be home. Perhaps he would finally get some much needed
rest.
“You're home!” His mother exclaimed, pulling him close in a tight
embrace, “I've missed you, my baby.”
“Oh Mom, I'm not a baby,” David said, returning his mother's hug. “I
should put my things down,” he continued, heading for his bedroom.
After he had situated all his belongings, David joined his mother in
the kitchen where she was cooking dinner. He watched her cook and
remembered how much he had missed her home-cooked meals. “Yes,” he
thought, “this would be a good week, after all.”
“How's school going?” His mother inquired, as she chopped vegetables
for a soup. “You haven't been calling us anymore to let us know how
well you're doing. Is something the matter? Have you been sick?”
“No, everything's fine, Mom,” he tried to reassure her, “I'm doing
okay, I'm passing my classes with C's, it's just, I'm really busy and
the classes are a lot harder this semester.”
“Do you think you should be studying more?” she asked, not looking up
from the carrots she was working on.
“I'm studying as much as I can.” he answered, “I'm up 'til 3:00 in
the morning most of the time, and I'm always exhausted by the time I
go to bed,” and he laid his head to rest against the back of the chair
as if to emphasis his point.
“School can be tough sometimes, but you've always been a great
student.” David's mom paused to observe him for a moment. “Maybe you
can try studying in a group. That can help a lot. Or perhaps you
might consider hiring a tutor?”
David sighed, “I just don't have the time. I'm work full time after
school, I just don't have time to study with anyone, and I can't
afford a tutor, even if I managed to arrange the time for one.”
His mother dumped the vegetables into the boiling broth, and checked
on the fish baking in the oven. “Well,” she replied, “you should work
fewer hours. You're going to school so you can earn a degree to be a
computer programmer. If you can't pass your classes because you're
too busy working, at a convenience store, no less, then you shouldn't
be working.” Seeing the pained look on his face, she continued,
“David, you do know how important finishing school is, don't you?
Would you rather spend your life working through minimum wage jobs to
try and make ends meet?”
Staring down at the table, David replied, “No, I know Mom, but I have
to work... I really need the money.”
“What do you need money so badly for? Your tuition is covered, your
dad and I pay for your books and your basic living needs. What can
you possibly be spending so much money on that you can't pay for
working part time?”
“It's just.... I...” Davis stammered, finding it difficult to tell
her the reason.
“Just tell me,” his mother pleaded, “If it's something reasonable,
your father and I can discuss taking care of it so you can study. We
really want you to succeed.”
David studied his hands intently, took a breath, and finally
answered, “It's for a credit card I'm trying to pay off.”
“We didn't realize you had a credit card.” His mother turned to
address him, keeping her tone even to avoid overreacting.
“Well, I wasn't really planning on using it when I signed up for it.
There was a lady outside the bookstore asking everyone if they wanted
to apply for a credit card. She said it was the best way to build good
credit, and we didn't even have to use it. And it would be something
that would be useful if we had an emergency.” David looked up at his
mom who simply nodded and waited for him to continue. “I didn't use
it at first, but when I went out with my friends, they told me how
much easier it is to just swipe the card instead of carrying cash, and
they just pay it off when the bill comes at the end of the month.”
“Ok,” his mother acknowledged, “but that still doesn't explain why
you need the money. If you're working so much and going to school and
studying the rest of the time, when do you have time to even go out
and spend money?”
David hesitated, then went on with his story, “I paid everything off
at first, but a couple months ago I saw a really cool laptop, and you
know, so many students are bringing theirs to classes, and it makes it
easier to take notes, and stay organized... and it was on sale for 20%
off... it just seemed like it was meant to be...” David trailed off
for a second, then rushed on, “but I didn't want to ask you and Dad
for it since you already bought me a computer, and I figured I could
pay it off quickly.”
“Is there anything else?” his mother asked.
“Well... I did also get a new Blackberry phone.”
“What was wrong with your other phone?”
“It's just a basic phone.” David complained. “The Blackberry gives
you internet access, it has Bluetooth so you can sync with the
computer or with someone else's phone. It takes pictures, my other
phone couldn't even take pictures!” He tried to explain just how
wonderful the phone was, but right now, it seemed a little absurd to
him as well.
“Oh David,” his mother sighed, “ok, what else?”
“Well, I upgraded the sound system on my car, and bought a new pair
of shoes, some new clothes, I don't know, maybe a few smaller impulse
things here and there, and maybe spent a little more than I intended
to when I went out.” David hung his head.
“How much do you owe, then?” There was no answer, and his mother
repeated the question, “David, how much?”
“About $5,000.” A silence filled the room as his mother turned away,
and took the food out of the oven, and turned off the stove. David
fingered the pattern on the tablecloth, and mumbled, “There's
something else you should probably know.”
“Oh, what's that?” his mother inquired.
“I made a late payment once. I didn't mean to. I was working on a
midterm paper, and it slipped my mind, and when I sent it in, I guess
it got there late. When I got my statement the next month, it said I
got charged a penalty fee, and they raised my interest rate. To almost
30%. I'm trying really hard to pay it off as quickly as I can, but
the fees alone are about $100 a month. I tried calling the credit card
company, but they just said I defaulted on the loan, and they said
something about it being in a disclosure form they send with the card.
I'm guessing it was that little pamphlet that went on and on, but I
had no idea what it meant, and I'm sure I threw it away.” David grew
almost teary eyed as he tried to explain his desperation. His mother
walked over and hugged him, and said, “I'll talk it over with your
dad, and we'll figure something out. I'm proud of you for working so
hard to pay down your debt, but I also wish you would have come to us
sooner.”
“I'm sorry,” was about all David could choke out.
“It'll be alright.” his mother assured him. “Let's just have a nice
dinner right now, and we'll talk about this later when your dad and I
have had a chance to discuss it, ok?”
David nodded at his mom, and got up to help set the table. The
family gathered around the table to enjoy the wonderful meal that had
been cooked. David's younger brother and sister chattered excitedly
about school and their friends, and how much they were looking forward
to their own Spring Break the following week. Their parents had
promised to let each of them spend a night at a friend's house, and
they could also pick an amusement park they wanted to go to. After
dinner, the table was cleared, and dishes washed, and David's siblings
ran out to the back yard to play while the sun was still out. David
went to his room and laid down in his bed. He stared at the rock
posters that covered his walls, listening to the faint sounds of his
parents talking in muted tones in the living room.
There was a knock on his bedroom door, and David startled and sat up
in bed. He had dozed off, and now, he heard the knock again, “David,
honey,” he heard his mom say, “Can we come in? Your father and I would
like to talk with you.” David got up and opened the door. His parents
walked in, closing the door behind them. His father stood next to the
computer desk, eyeing the relatively new computer that sat there
unused other than when David was home. His mother sat down on the bed
next to David.
“Having a credit card is a big responsibility.” David's father
started to lecture.
“I know that now.” was David's reply. His father nodded, and
considered what he wanted to say. Contemplating the look on David's
face, he forgoes the lecture and says instead, “Your mother and I have
decided we will pay off the credit debt for you, but on 2
conditions.” David looked up, almost fearful off what was next.
“You will give us your credit card, which we are going to destroy.
And you will quit your job so you can focus on school.”
“But what about my car?” David asked meekly.
David's father thought it over, “Because you need transportation, we
will cover your car expenses for the rest of the semester. However, we
do expect you to fully attend to your classes and bring up your grades
as much as you can. Don't expect for us to give you money to go out
with your friends. Do you understand?”
David nodded, whispering “Yes.” almost inaudibly.
“These were not very good choices you made,” his mother joined in,
“but we want to help you through this, and give you a chance to do
better. You're not the only one who has made these mistakes. Many
college students fall in a similar trap and end up quitting school to
work to pay off debt for a long time. Credit card companies are
notorious for hiking up interest rates for any small mistake, and you
get stuck with it. Our president is working on fixing that, to
require credit card companies to charge fees in a more responsible
way, but that doesn't excuse you for buying things that you don't
need, and can't pay off at one time.”
“I know,” David responded, “I'm so sorry. It won't happen again.
I've been so stressed out for the last few months, I really didn't
know how I was going to get anything done. I'm so sorry, so sorry.” he
repeated.
After a moment, his mother spoke. “We try to provide you and your
brother and sister everything you need, and also try to give you a
few things you want if we can afford it. Maybe we forgot to teach you
the distinction between what you need and what you want. This computer
right here in your room is a good example. You don't need your own
computer in your own room, but we felt that you had always worked so
hard at school, and deserved to be rewarded with privacy and space to
study, and it also wouldn't hurt to give you a nice computer to use.
But it's not a necessity.”
“I think he understands, don't you?” David's father spoke up. David
looked at his parents, and quietly picked up his wallet off his desk,
and handed his father the dreadful credit card. His parents exchanged
a glance, and his mother leaned in to hug David, and give him a kiss
goodnight. “I love you,” she whispered. His father patted him on the
back, and his parents left him to be alone in his room.
David laid back down on his bed, and thought over the conversation he
had with his parents. Suddenly, he breathed a sigh of relief, feeling
as if his life had just been handed back to him, and he now had a
second chance to do it right. Closing his eyes, he fell asleep, this
time thinking off all the wonderful possibilities when he got back to
school.

The current global recession recovery analysis
The United States faces current economic crisis and many of financial
experts propose solutions for these problems. The world concerns about
these problems because it is not just for America’s problem, it is for
other countries as well. The economy link with other countries’
economy and works together therefore the problem that we face now is
a
global economic crisis. The world leaders came up with many solutions
at the G20 and take these problems seriously. One of experts who come
up with the reasons of the United States’ economy crises named Andrew
Bacevich wrote the book called “the Limits of Power.” In his book, He
argues that the United States is in a crisis made up of three
components, which are economic and cultural, political, and military.
Bacevich depicts American society as imbued with a culture of
entitlement. American believes them as the global leader and thinks
that other countries should welcome their ideas and system. Bacevich
believes that America need to change of their aspect and they should
stop interfere other countries’ business. Bacevich claims that
President Jimmy Carter’s famous speech “crisis of confidence” warning
Americans about their hubris and sanctimony. Bacevich thinks that the
US political system is in depression because the America confuses
freedom with appetite, an obsession with consumption, and never-ending
search for more (Tepperman). As Bacevich says, “Whoever dies with the
most toys wind, shop till you drop, and it feels good, do
it,” (Bacevich, P16) foreign policy affects Americans’ penchant for
consumption and never-ending search for more. Financial crisis is what
the American make of it. Buying things that they don’t need and
building liabilities, not building assets that make them gain the
financial freedom. Bacevich points out that the President Ronald
Reagan told Americans Ronald Reagan’s optimism and confidence by
offering Americans both “ guns and butter” (Bacevich, p.62) put
Americans in today’s economic crisis. In Bacevich’s view, Bush
administration’s intended “remake the world” (Bacevich, p.60) by
imposing American Values. Bacevich believes if Americans do not
discipline themselves domestically and internationally, “have
forfeited command of their own destiny” (Bacevich, P.65), Americans
cannot survive from today’s economic crisis. Bacevich examines the
causes of the current disarray in the United States. Bacevich claims
that since the Presidency of Harry S. Truman the country has been on
a war footing. During that time
power has become increasingly concentrated in the executive branch and
congress has been moved outside the circle of real power over
decisions about military initiatives. Bacevich mentions about four
core convictions which are the tenet that history has a purpose, the
view that the United States embodies freedom, the faith that God has
called Americans to advance this freedom, and the belief that only
when American values spread out throughout the world will the United
States finally be secure. Bacevich’s analysis is correct, and the
above-mentioned political approaches show the type of tough measures
needed to reform not only our economy but our culture as well. I
disagree with Bacevich’s view that American should give up their
consumption freedom for global recession recovery because I think if
someone chooses to work harder to have a more quality life, and then
they should possess a more quality life. We need to ask ourselves
what
is the purpose of working hard? The difference between the communism
and democratism are that we do not have the limit of earning from our
labor and have freedom of consumption. Most of Americans work hard to
support themselves and their families. The richer spend more money
than middle class and middle classes spend more money than poor and
poor spend more money than homeless. I think the problem that American
has is the balance problems not overspending problems. We are at the
center of a gross imbalance in the world. Oil is another reason of the
global economy recession. For instance, the oil consumption in the
United States is the one that cannot be control and reduce immediately
because it is hard to living in the United States without car. Most of
American owns their own vehicle and reduce our oil consumption in one
day is the idealistic idea. Probably the imbalances in oil consumption
effect the global economy recession and power but I do not agree with
Bacevich about the purpose of declare Iraq war. “If there be such
valor in the bearing, what make we Abroad? Why then, women are more
valiant that stay at home, if bearing carry it;and the ass more
captain than the lion;…” (Alicibiades, Timon of Athens ActIII.5).
Bacevich mentions that the one of the reason that we were in war
because of the oil. Bacevich blames Bush Administration for the
responsibilities but we also think about what will happen to the world
when the terrorists would do with the 30% of world’s oil that they
have. What would be the world if they cannot buy the oils that they
need immediately? Of course we need to think about the stuff we throw
away or thoughtless waste and excess. We need to admit that our ways
of life abuse our wealth and power in so many ways. As Bacevich says,
we all know that it needs to be balance but it needs time cannot
happen in one day. The hybrid cars or battery cars cannot be replaced
with current cars right away with our economy situation. As Bacevich’s
view the United States is powerful that there is no need for us to
listen to what the other countries might think and the United States
mess around in the matters of other countries either for
financially or militarily to protect our interests in their countries.
American does not give much consideration to what is the best interest
of the other countries, but I think he is wrong because America did
not behave so selfishly to other countries. The United States works
for the world’s peace and we fight for other countries freedom.
America is like a big brother to the rest of the world. Also like our
democracy, the rest of the world need the limited government system to
check and regulate their power. For instance, what if we disregard
terrorists’ action towards to other countries? What if we did not
regulate North Korea to own the nuclear bombs? We need the United
States as a global leader that look out for the rest of world. It is
very important to use the power wisely, if that power use in bad way
will cause a disaster. In “the picture of Dorian grey,” Dorian’s
mother choose the guy her father hates, and her father who has the
enough power to kill the guy cause Dorian’s mother a horrible pain led
to suicide. It is almost impossible to share the power evenly within
the world therefore one nation will get the most power and I believe
that nation should be the United States because as I mentioned it
earlier, the power can be a poison or antidote depends how and who use
it. Matter-of-fact, the United States uses the power in good way and
wisely. Wilde says, “Being good, means being in harmony with oneself.
Disharmony appears when man has been forced to bring own life into
accord with lives of the others. Whether we like it or not war can be
the solution for some problems and Iraq war was need it for our
safety. Bacevich accuse our government as a “bad guy,” but that could
be just one side of view. We could view as a “good guy” from other
side. During the global recession, thousands of skilled Americans lost
their jobs led their family helpless. The poor and the middle class
American have to pay more for everything even for their basic
necessity. The United States and almost every nation suffer and trap
of debt due to global crisis. In “the picture of Dorian Grey”, Henry
says, “I can sympathize with everything, except suffering,” “I cannot
sympathize with that. It is too ugly, too horrible, too distressing.
There is something terribly morbid in the modern sympathy with pain.
One should sympathize with the color, the beauty, the joy of life. The
less said about life’s sores the better.” (Lord Henry, p37). The
people’s ignorance of other people’s affairs worsens these problems.
The effective solutions for these problems could be creating of more
jobs.
If Americans gain their jobs, purchasing capacity of the people will
increase. They will spend more and thus demands for goods will be
create and market will expand as well. We cannot see the problems
separately because it links and works together; therefore we have to
treats the entire problem as a priority. I think the main reason of
the present global economic crisis is the subprime mortgage crisis.
Subprime mortgage loans starts with Option ARMs remain fixed for
certain period of time and they turn into a huge amount. Most of the
borrowers default due to this high repayment rate and led to
foreclosure of houses. Many financial institutions called for
bankrupt. Finally the Government passing of Emergency Economic
Stabilization (Act of 2008), it improves the situation and it gives
hope of financial recovery. The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act
of 2008 is a bailout of the U.S. financial system that is a law
enacted in response to the subprime mortgage crisis authorizing the
United States Secretary of the Treasury to spend up to US$700 billion
to purchase distressed assets, especially mortgage-backed securities,
and make capital injections into banks. (govtrack.us)Americans need to
step up to the plate and fix their own finances and rethink their
lives better. The United States needs to join effort on the
environmental front as well as to combat terrorism. If the worlds work
together continuously it will resolve the current global recession but
it takes time. Rome was not built in a day. It stars from one person
and anyone can be that person. They all share the
burden of each other’s mistakes. The only way to fix these problems,
it’s not by the Government, it’s by people need to helping each other
out. The crisis will be fixed in no time.

Last Birthday gift

Today is Wendy’s birthday and also it’s our 10th anniversary. I went
to Glendale mall with one of my best friend named Sam to get his help
to choose her birthday gift. Finding a birthday gift for my wife is
one of the hardest and very difficult things to do for me especially
with little amount of money. I lost my job last month because of
today’s American economy crisis. I keep looking for a job but it is
very hard to find the job at this time. “Hey Jay, how about chocolate
for Wendy? Woman loves chocolate I’ll bet Wendy loves it too.” Sam
and I pass to see’s candy shop and Sam suggests chocolate for my
wife’s birthday gift. “ Wendy doesn’t eat chocolate since last month
for her diet. We should think about something else for her gift.” It
was always hard for me to go shopping because I am not use to
shopping. I only purchase necessities stuffs for living. I think it
is waste money if I buy something that I don’t really need such as I
pod’s which most Americans has. The reason that I can’t think and act
like American because I was born in Somalia, one of poor country in
the world, came to the United States when I was 29 as a college
student. I was so poor that I need to work full time almost 10 years
able to save 1years of college tuition. I met my wife when I attend
school she was beautiful tall and blond like one of a super model in
the magazine. When I first talk to her, I was nervous and shy made my
face red like sweet potatoes. I helped her math and she helped my
English. We became friend at first and we started date after that
semester ends. She was open minded and funny who like to go to beach
at summer and party at night like typical Americans. One of her habit
is shopping and driving. So we often drive to Santa Monica beach and
hangout all summer. She likes to shop on the weekend and most of the
time she overspends it which causes the financial problem. Even she
doesn’t have money, she has to go watch every recent movies at
theater. She loves star bucks coffee and loves fast food. She spends
more money than she earns. She likes to change her well working phone
every time the new phone release. I am using same phone for 5 years
and it works very well. I read the article about the other countries
reaction regards the spouse’s overspending habits. When Arab women
overspend to purchase an Avaya from a brand shop, her husband allows
punishing her by slap on her face. But most American women if their
credit card over limits, they open another credit card and spends it
again. Last week I had to sell my car to pay off her credit card and
Wendy promise that she won’t waste any money but on the way to work,
she just has to have that mocha latte and muffin with chocolate chips
at the star bucks. During an afternoon break, she flips through a
catalogue and sees some fabulous shoes. She dials the toll-free
number and order that shoe. On the way home, she stops by the local
discount store to pick up a few necessities and come out with 10 new
CDs. After picking up a pizza on the way home, she realizes that she
have spent more than what she should spend in just under 12 hours. It
is so easy to spend money in America today. On the Internet, on
television, the radio, and around every corner, the opportunities are
waiting for us to spend our money. When I got home after pickup up our
son Ron from daycare center I saw Wendy’s last month credit card bill.
“Honey, did you see your credit card bill?” I ask Wendy. “Yeah… What
about it?” “Do you want to say anything about it?” I ask. “No. not
really? Why? Do I have to say something? “Did you buy the I phone
yesterday?” I couldn’t believe that she bought the I phone. “But you
changed your phone 6 month ago” I said to Wendy and she turn around at
me and said “Yeah I know but everyone has it.” I almost yell at her,
“Wendy I think you do not realize your overspending habit is a big
problem that most of Americans have today and it links to America
economy crisis. Americans think there is nothing wrong with
purchasing thing that they want. I think Americans shouldn’t confuse
their freedom of consumption with appetite.” Wendy did not say
anything and just look at me until I left the house with her birthday
gift.

Essay 2

Is the Force with US?

Our nation is obviously in a crisis; our economic down turn is around
every corner and is clearly apparent in every American. Closed
businesses, staggering unemployment rate and fuel prices are just a
few of the evidences we can visually see as an individual without even
being concerned about the economy. In other words this cannot be
ignored, Bacevich’s book “Limits of Power,” discusses the roots of our
problems from America becoming a superpower to ultimately having a
collective mentally of “us versus them.” After WWII America’s economy
was at a peak, American factories produced goods and good jobs, but
this high America was feeling undoubtedly came with side effects, with
all this power the new American policy became “global leadership.”
During this “global leadership” America wanted in on Central Asia and
OPEC because it became more apparent our thriving nation was very much
dependent on foreign energy. Only during the Presidency of Carter
where he suggested “Energy will be the immediate test of out ability
to unite this nation, and it can also be the standard around which we
rally” (Bacevich pg 35). This is a new mindset of consumption and
saving, granted this was the 1970s more than 30 years ago, yet our
country is now in a deepening recession. Carter’s forerunner Regan
which I believe is to blame for the Nation’s current spiritually of
consumerism, “We must decide that ‘less’ is not enough” (Bacevich pg
37). That quote from Regan has finally caught up to the Nation, and
our government is now stepping in the right direction with passing
bills not to limit on how much oil we can use, like water
conservation, but bills for emissions such as “Expressing the sense of
Congress in support of a single national fuel economy standard” This
bill doesn’t deter consumerism but it is an acknowledgement from our
government that we need to rethink our personal energy consumption as
a nation.

Carter had more then a mindset planned out for Americans, he conjured
up a Six-point program with having a goal of energy independence,
although his plan for energy independence did not come without any
sacrifices from individuals. In “Limits of Power” Bacevich’s analysis
on post WWII is correct because this is when our consumerism began to
grow rapidly, by the time Carter had come to office and offered his
own plan to turn our nation around, America wanted more and being in
debt didn’t seem to be so bad, letting the next generation handle the
gigantic footprint of the past. Regan fed this fuel of having the
next shift take care of the problem, he stated in his inaugural
speech, “You and I, as individuals, can, by barrowing, live beyond our
means, but for only a limited time…” (Bacevich, 39) Although his
intentions were to clean up the economy (of 1981) by the end of his
term, he has spent double that of his successor, his ultimate focus
was keeping America safe, declaring that defense was not a part of a
budgeted item. I believe Americans followed suit, still our Nation
bossily shows off our obsession with the way we live, former Secretary
of Defense Donald Rumsfeld was quoted after 9/11 “We have two choices:
either we change the way we live or change the way they live, we
choose the latter” (Becavich, 58). 20 years after Regan regime, he is
still influencing our economy. I believe we can all just turn off the
televisions and internet because everything that has happened in the
past is happening to this day. We have an energy crisis, we are
invading other countries to protect our lifestyle and we are pouring
our hearts into the new presidency.

Obama our current president has numerous issues to deal with, Iraq,
Afghanistan, health care, promises to the people and [his main focus]
the economy. His campaign was based on change, change we can count on
and change within ourselves. We cannot change what we tolerate, and I
believe we have reached that limit. In this congressional Bill
“Expressing the sense of Congress in support of a single national fuel
economy standard,” this Bill is about the refutable national standard
for emissions. The Bill pushes for California’s emissions laws be a
national standard for all vehicles. One thing I didn’t like about his
bill is the fact that as long as the Bill is not taking away from the
economy or people losing jobs it will be in affect. The fact is that
people are not buying cars because of fuel prices, so they want to
wait on a fuel efficient car, however if people are still making the
same models when a foreign manufacture like Volkswagens is able to put
out 50mpg diesel engine within a year, taking away from the national
standard for emissions would further hurt our economy overall. This
is the change Becavich has been wishing about, although the Bill is
mediocre compared to other nations like Europe where they have higher
standards for their emission laws, this step is still the precise
approach into having a new mindset of conservation with the government
supporting the issue.

Essay 2

With all the bad publicity about the economy nowadays
anyone with access to a TV, magazine, or newspaper should be somewhat
familiar with the current economic crisis here in America. The United
States economy is racing ahead at dangerous speeds, and it may be too
late to prevent the return of widespread inflation. America had the
strongest economy in the world before we got in this situation. Even
though we are living in economy crisis, they are refusing to change
their lifestyle. According to Labor Department data, there are over
139 million Americans who are employed, up by 2.6 million since the
recession ended in November of 2001. Reversely, like before 2001, our
economy crisis has begun since we start war in Iraq. We can not spend
that much on luxurious things recently. The limits of power
(Bacevich,
2009) complained “the crisis of profligacy”, the democratic ethic has
degenerated in to an “ethic of self-gratification” and he indicated
that America was making money and the government encouraged their
citizens to spend.
The American economy is a vibrant, free-market system
that is constantly developing out of the choices and decisions made
by
millions of citizens who play multiple, often overlapping roles as
consumers, producers, investors and voters. The changes in the
organization and performances of the manufacturing industry over the
last century have helped shape the American economy. The consumers
have helped create the current economical crisis we are facing at the
time by the constant demand of imported merchandise. Everywhere you
go
today, you see white ear buds sticking on people’s ears. There are
millions of people (especially teenagers) that own iPods in America
right now. I remember the first time I saw an iPod on TV from 50
Cents’ music video. I thought the gadget was really cool because of
how much music it could hold in such a small size. Straight away, one
would think that only upper class people would be able to own this.
Now, everything has changed. Everyone has to have an iPod. Many
people
will no doubt spend a lot just to go along with the flow of the new
trend. Although they’re layoff from their work, still making a line
in front of an Apple store to get iphone. Everyone loves shopping,
who
doesn’t want new things every week? However, why buy more than what
is
needed? As we can see, our economy is keep going down with
“overspending of consumers”.
According to “Consumer culture is no accident” by David
Suzuki, March 25, 2009 article, retailing analyst Victor Lebow
expressed the solution, “Our enormously productive economy … demands
that we make consumption our way of life, that we convert the buying
and use of goods into rituals, that we seek our spiritual
satisfaction, our ego satisfaction, in consumption…. we need things
consumed, burned up, replaced, and discarded at an ever-accelerating
rate.” The American economy ultimate purpose or to produce more
consumer goods than better health care, education, housing,
transportation, or recreation or less poverty and hunger, but
providing more stuff to consumers. Consumer goods aren’t created by
the economy out of nothing. They come from the Earth, and when they
are used up, they will be returned to the Earth as garbage and toxic
waste. In Oscar Wilde 1891 novel, “The Picture of Dorian Gray” the
main character a young wealthy man named Dorian Gray expresses the
social pressure to do whatever it takes to remain in the high social
class part. Dorian Gray has "sold himself to the devil for a pretty
face." While Dorian remains young, his portrait ages and reflects his
hedonistic lifestyle, as he pursues a "madness of pleasure" with
little regard for anyone else. Like Dorian Gray, our consumer
reflects
narcissism, decadence, and the wages of sin.
A consumer's buyer behavior is influenced by cultural, social,
personal, and psychological factors. These factors cause consumers to
develop product and brand preferences. On February 12, 2009
forbes.com
"Spending won't save the economy" by Ron Wilcox, He said in his
articles, he explained our present situation with Japanese’s economy
recession in the 1990s, the Japanese government rightly criticized
for
not implementing policies to increase individuals' spending. Japanese
consumers had very high rates of savings. Many households could have
paid cash for any new home electronics purchase; they just chose to
put money in the bank instead. We ought to learn Japanese’s behavior
like instead of spending money on individuals, saving it! Consumption
can control our economy crisis. If we endeavor to reduce our debt and
consumption on products goods, should be a solution for the current
recession.

regret of Sandra

“Click Click Click” long blond hair, white fair skin and charming a
young woman, her name is Sandra. She is learning back in her favorite
armchair, her forefinger quickly press the mouse and grasps a cup of
coffee on the other hand. A needle of clock point to 8 AM, she is
making a very serious facial expression on her face. “Should I buy it?
or not? its $1050 dollar after 20%off, it’s over at 6pm” she murmured.
After a little while, suddenly she claps her hands deliberately, “yes!
I can still use $2,000 on my Wells Fargo credit card! Let’s check out
this item.” Clicked check out button without wavering and she calms
her agitated breast. Sandra is 25 years old; she graduated prestigious
university 2 years ago and majored in economic. Unfortunately she is
not working now, just builds their debt by uncontrollable shopping.
She enjoys her life as well being with yoga, playing golf and tennis.
Her husband Tom, manage all payment. Tom always connives her
lavishness because he is the owner of gas station, he makes sufficient
money that they lining on luxuriously.
After she had a shower, she aware of her cell phone that ringing in
her purse. “Hello?” She answered barely. “Good morning honey, what are
you doing?” Tom asked.
“I’m just sitting on my chair, why?” answered annoyingly.
“Can you do me a favor?” Tom asked.
“Of course honey, what?” Sandra answered.
“Please go to the mail box and check out all bills that we have to pay
for this month and then bring them to my store.” He asked seriously.
“Hmmm... ok no problems.” She answered. However she was curious why he
ordered like that errand because she’s never heard like that his
serious voice before.
Sandra just slips on her hoodie hurriedly, and ran out to the outside
for getting the mails.
On her way to front door, her cell phone ringing noisily again and she
immediately answered the phone gladly. Because it was her best friend
Nancy.
“Hello? Hey Sandra! Did you get a catalog from Nordstrom?” Nancy
doesn’t seem to be care about say good morning.
“wait, let me check it” Sandra put her cell phone between her ear and
shoulder, and starts to find a catalog quickly on pile of bills.
“Yes, I got em’” Sandra answered.
“They starts anniversary sale today! It’s up to 50% off!! Isn’t it
exiting? Nancy’s nerves are on edge. Her overreaction stimulated
Sandra’s mind. “All cuti shini stuffs are waiting for us! Let’s go
right now before all things are gone!!!” Nancy said merrily.
“Wow that’s cool! But wait! I have to stop by at my husband’s store to
hand these bills. Maybe one hour is enough.” Sandra answered.
“Ok, no problems. Then I will wait on the Nordstrom, when you get
here, just call me.”
They hang up the phone.
Sandra just gets in to her Mercedes Benz S-Class and turn on the KIIS
FM radio that she usually listens. It takes 20 from Sandra’s home to
Tom’s store. Today she feels little bit longer and board more and more
at this distance. When she arrived on the store, Tom was talking on
the phone very soberly.
“So how can I ward off this situation?” Tom asked on the phone and
after a while he takes a deep breath.
“Honey what happen? And what situation are you talking about?” Sandra
asked embarrassedly.
“Sandra, listen up carefully. We’re now on very serious situation. We
might go into bankruptcy all my businesses.” Tom said.
“What????? You’ve never said it before! Oh my god. I can’t believe
it.” Her face becoming stiffens and tears stand in her eyes.
“I’m sorry, last several months get into the red. There’re no more
credit cards that we can make right now, and the lawyer said the
bankruptcy is the best way of get out this situation. That’s why I
told you to bring all bills.” He said. “Sandra lets start it again,
and would you promise one things? Tom entreatingly said.
“Ok… I know what you are going to talking about.” Sandra snivels.
“Everything will be ok. Honey, I know recently hard get a job, but
don’t be frustrated.”
Sandra called to Nancy to explain that why she will not be there. She
realized if she saved money rather than over consuming, they should
prevented from this urgent situation.

The typical American lifestyle is full of gratuitous indulgent
spending. In Andrew J Bacevich’s 2009 book The Limits of Power he
suggests that Americans should revaluate the true meaning of liberty.
Bacevich seems to feel that Americans live extremely lavish lives, and
constantly spend money towards “wants” and not necessities. Due to the
fact that The United States is involved in a costly war, and many
Americans spend foolishly while lacking a budget, it is no surprise
that the economy is currently in a recession. America is “sinking
under a mountain of bad debts and soaring unemployment” (Tucker,
2009). Several Americans have found themselves in a finachinal wreck,
and are faced with an immense amount of debt, bankruptcies, even
homelessness caused by foreclosures. Americans are truly blessed. As
years have passed it seems as though there are several individuals who
believed that Americans should not and would never have to undergo the
hardships that are faced by other countries. The United States has a
deficit, and there are several Americans who live pay check to pay
check while struggling on a daily basis. The current economic crisis
has rightly caused some Americans to “re-evaluate the importance of
material items and has also forced millions to re-define what is
really necessary” (Kiely, 2009). It is better for Americans to be wise
conscious consumers, instead of imprudently spending in abundance.
American people need to learn to resist the temptation of indulgent
consumerism in order to have a significant positive impact on the
American economy.
One really big issue that is hitting home for several Americans is
foreclosure. According to the Q1 2008 U.S. Foreclosure Market Report,
from the article 2008 Foreclosures of flippingfrenzy.com there have
been 649,917 properties that were foreclosed upon during the first
quarter of the year. The 649,917 properties was what some would call a
large increase of twenty three percent from the quarter before, but
the same 649,917 properties that were part of foreclosure was a
massive increase of one hundred and twelve percent of the first
quarter of 2007. This is an alarming statistic that should not be
taken lightly. Foreclosure is a serious issue faced by the American
economy. “Families all over the country continue to lose homes in
record numbers, stripping families of their wealth and destroying
entire neighborhoods” (Schiffers, 2007). It is time for Americans to
realize that we are accountable for our actions. Actions have
consequences. If people continue to choose to indulgently spend money
on items that are not indispensable, it will not only affect them, but
their families as well. People struggle to pay their mortgages. Those
who can barely afford their mortgages usually pay after the due date,
which results in late charges. Late fees are an extra expense.
Typically, many families who have to pay late charges monthly play
what is known as “catch up” on their bills including their mortgage.
This creates a cycle that leads to debt and possible foreclosure.
Americans need to open their eyes and take heed to the fact that the
United States is in a financial crises. It is time for people to
practice and make a habit of wise consumerism. American people need to
make sure they can afford to pay their mortgage and buy what is
essential, instead of buying superfluously.

If Americas do not change their spending habits I guarantee the number
of foreclosures will continue to increase. There are plenty of
individuals who can not seem to fathom the fact that this county is
indefinitely in an un-favored state. There are too many people
“suffering because of poor financial decisions and careless spending
habits” (Kiely, 2009). It is time to define the true definition of
freedom, just because we are free does not mean we should be
indulgent. We are blessed with freedoms, and with that freedom comes
responsibility. It is going to take more then the work of American
politicians to get the economy back on its feet, it is going to take
changes and sacrifices made by the American people. We need to stop
indulgent spending. Instead, we need to focus on smart consumption by
living modesty and buying what is essential.

Blink of an Eye
It all happened in what felt like a blink of the eye. The family was
so happy. Movie Fridays, family ski and camping trips, and all BJ’s
friends got to come over at any time. BJ had what was known as the
“American Dream” life. It has just been her and her Dad every since
she was a little girl, but she had no complaints. After all she was
living what most refer to as the “American Dream” life. She had a nice
home, car, job, and plenty of friends. She always said “ If I died
today, I would not care because I am happy and have accomplished a
lot in my life.”
As time passed she realized that family trips started to diminished,
and the daily gifts from Dad turned to weekly, which turned into
monthly, and now its twice a year, birthdays and Christmas. Instead of
just the weekly advertising papers arriving in her mailbox she began
to notice more and more bills with atten: late free charges. She
turned a blind eye because she was truly oblivious. Unstill one day
she was lying down and smelt smoke. When she got up to check where the
smoke was coming from, she realized a fire started in her garage. In
panic, she ran to the back yard to grab her dog and went to the front
of the house to call the police. Next she called her Dad. When the
fire men where done putting out the fire they began to talk to her Dad
about the insurance on the house, she overheard him tell them that he
was months late on his mortgage and had to drop their insurance
policy. BJ asked her father about their situation and he just broke
down in tears. He told her that his hours had been cut from his job
and if they cut any more time they would be sure to lose the house.
Who knew that the state of the economy could take such a harsh toll on
families who never had a worry in the world? Now BJ, who had never
worked a day in her life, has two jobs and is a full time student. She
is grateful for the experience. The experience has humbled her , and
although it tried to tear her family apart it will only bring her and
her father closer in the long run. Now she knows how vital spending
is, because life can truly change in the blink of an eye.

Part 1

True Meaning of Freedom
Gas Price Rocketing Up, Oil Crisis Coming Back after 35 Years,
Soaring Gas Price Hitting New Record, Coming of the Second Great
Depression, Panic of 2008, the Crash of 2008, Black Week... In May of
2008, oil market started shaking and then soaring up like a rocket. In
the following fall, with several failures of large financial
institutions, came a new era of stock market crash. Despite the
deafening alarm, many Americans were still wandering in their long-
undisturbed dream while a few were wakened with the heavy blow. Andrew
Bacevich was among those enlightened individuals. Through his several
books, the Limits of Power becoming the most remarkable, Bacevich has
endeavored to wake the asleep. He warns them of the present national
crises and presents the path leading to the root of the predicament;
profligacy. Some critics or defenders of the ignorant stand against
him singing lullabies of indulgence. Although they stubbornly deny the
fact America is facing downhill, if the case is looked at a step
behind, it reveals a cruel truth. That striking exposure did not
arrive in a moment but over a long period of time. The build-up from
profligacy to the current crises is the fruit of distorted meaning of
freedom which resides deep down the history of this nation. As “the
day of reckoning” approaches, Americans need to take an opportunity to
self-reflect and redefine the true meaning of freedom in the hope of
rescuing America from a swamp of consumerism and present difficulties.
At the time of American Revolution, freedom meant self-governance. It
was to refuse monarchy and embrace independent government that
protects “inalienable rights” as stated in the Declaration of
Independence. The long history of profligacy embarked when the
misinterpretation of freedom first began. As economy grew well in
America, people started to accept freedom as economic prosperity. The
modest start of the new nation merged into a country of individualism,
selfishness, and even greed. Observing the market revolution era,
Alexis De Tocqueville once depicted the new stream of profligacy very
concisely in his book Democracy in America. He wrote, “In the United
States, a man builds a house in which to spend his old age, and sells
it before the roof is on; he plants a garden and [rents] it just as
the trees are coming into bearing; he brings field into tillage and
leaves other men to gather crops” (Tocqueville). While many wealthy
middle-class men appeared in the era, some were tragically excluded.
Those who were not so successful seizing any economic opportunities
became so-called “wage workers.” Because no protective laws for
workers properly existed at that time, the wage labor was no different
than slavery. The rich, in order to grasp the transformed definition
of freedom, exploited on others' freedom. The practice of greed
fostered profligacy perpetually. In a protest against their employers,
some young mill women charged their factory owners as “the oppressive
hand of avarice [that] would enslave us” (Foner).
Another change in freedom's purport came when America was introduced
with what is now its core political ideology: “manifest destiny.” This
time, the infection laid a new path of political policy. The phrase
conveyed that the United Stated had a divinely assigned mission to
expand the territory to overspread democracy, “the development of the
great experiment in liberty.” Another profligacy paradox was to come.
In 1803, President Jefferson made a historical real-estate bargain
through Louisiana Purchase. Regardless of his belief in midget
government for maximum individual freedom, the financial prosperity
the territory would bring forth was tempting enough for Jefferson to
abandon his conviction. To Jefferson, achieving economic well-being,
thus needing more land seemed to coincide with the ideal meaning of
freedom, the right to pursue happiness. However, in the name of
deteriorated freedom, many Indians and blacks in Louisiana territory
now had to suffer their own loss of freedom. The event also set an
innovating precedent in foreign policy: To satisfy the hungry American
appetites, any means were available even if they intruded other
individuals' freedom. Bacevich viewed the newly defined characteristic
of U.S. foreign policy as “pragmatism” coupled with “opportunism,”
financial benefits in the case of Louisiana Purchase, rather than
“idealism,” the true sense of freedom (Bacevich). As another bitter
result, the incident made a precedent in giving the president more
authority than what was mentioned in Constitution.
Throughout the second chapter of The limits of power, Bacevich bases
on the latter leading instance for the argumentation in political
crisis especially the national security catastrophe. After World War
II, national security objectives sided with triumph of freedom
everywhere. Because of earning more power to govern the nation, the
presidents started hand-picking some elites in favor of his ideology
to derive out advice and answers to the national security goals.
Bacevich called them the “Wise Men,” who took up seats in Washington
without the publics' will but the president himself. “The government
of the people, by the people, for the people” met a hindrance due to
its commander of chief overexerting his freedom. This problem gave
birth to many wars in the past. Among them, Iraq War and the War in
Middle East turned out to be the most disastrous which yet dispensed
another paradox. A resolution which passed immediately on the day of
its submission by the House of Representatives and the Senate without
any amendment and with a huge majority's agreement brought up an issue
of “expressing support for all Iranian citizens who embrace the values
of freedom, human rights, civil liberties, and rule of law, and for
other purposes.” Along with its limited support for Iranians who
seemed favorable to this country, the bill condemned those who
demonstrated against the U.S. policy and Iranian government's
suppression of free communication. American government is already
notorious for its wire-tapping and interfering communication through
the Internet or cellphones. How can a man ask another to take the
speck out of the eye when he himself has a plank in his own eye?
The expanded, degraded meaning of freedom gave birth to profligacy
and many other paradox which resulted in the present-day affliction
ranging all the way from economy to politics. A country established on
a meek, genuine goal of achieving freedom became a monstrous “super
power” by overlooking its corruption. As depicted in a novel The
picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, Dorian Gray sets off the story
as a pure, handsome boy. Later on, he gets influenced by Lord Henry
who teaches him a new hedonism. Dorian Gray indulges in every kind of
pleasure until he finally drops dead as an ugly old man. Americans
need to learn a lesson from the story. It is not too late to turn
back. The day of reckoning is here now. It is time for us, the
American citizens to take a look back our country, not any other
foreign nations, to find the answer to overcoming the predicament.

Part 2
Nervously biting her nails, Tiffany is sitting in an office filled
with sinister looking men. Abruptly, another man followed by more
intimidating figures comes into the room. The man sits down in an
armchair across Tiffany. Tiffany stops her motion and anxiously waits
for the guy to speak trying her best to avoid eye contact. He starts
the conversation, or rather a menace with threatening questions. “Do
you know why you are here?” the man asked. There was no answer. With a
louder voice, he asks again, “Then, do you know how much money you owe
me?” Startled, the girl finally looks at him. The men in the room grin
at her.
Just like any other girls at her school, Tiffany is a typical college
student who loves shopping. Attending an university in a wealthy
neighborhood, her rich friends have passed Tiffany a bad influence of
spending although her financial background cannot afford her to do so.
Her life used be a modest one before she entered college. Born in a
humble preacher's family, she could not enjoy a life of luxury. Her
family motto was thrift and diligence. Growing up under the motto,
Tiffany learned to be happy with whatever she earned through hard
work.
Graduating from high school, leaving her family, and entering a new
school changed her perspective. All the girls around her carried brand-
name bags such as Chanel or Louis Vuitton. They drove expensive cars
like Ferrari or Mercedes. Shopping and partying were their daily
routine. To make friends, Tiffany had to assimilate their ways of
life. That meant resemblance in appearance, and it required a good
source of finance.
The first solution was getting a job, not just any job but a well-
paying one. After a month of job hunting, however, the only available
option she found for a mere college freshman was working as a waitress
at a restaurant. It had been almost three months since she moved to
this new environment, and she still had no decent friends. Being away
from family and old friends in a strange place, she felt more and more
lonely and desperate.
One day, a mail enclosing a tempting message came in. It advertised
to be lending money easily. Although her ears perked up at the offer,
she could not abandon her belief. She just left the mail in her room
and soon forgot about it. As her first payday approached, her
excitement and expectation grew. When she finally opened up the
envelope, she was rather disappointed. All the hard work she had done
seemed worth more than what she was rewarded with. Realizing the
hardship in earning a good deal of money the right way, her belief in
diligence began to erode.
The first thing she turned at was credit cards. She could easily have
a credit card issued. The moment the card was delivered, Tiffany
immediately headed to the mall. Since she did not have to worry about
paying back right away, Tiffany kept on swiping on credit. The limit
was soon approached. Having experienced the easiness of finding a
source of finance, there was no need to worry. She could issue more
cards without difficulty and hesitation. Every time she received new
cards, she recklessly swore to herself that she would not overuse
them.
After several months of abuse, the bills piled up and created a mount
of debts. She did successfully made some friends on campus whom she
often hung out with. While she was enjoying the superficial
extravagance at, the credit card companies started sending her
warnings. When Tiffany ignored them, they cut her limits and
eventually suspended usage. At the end, all she was left with were
threats and statements from the credit companies along with the
shallow friendship.
Tiffany was facing two choices: to confess and ask her parents for
help or to discover another way to resolve the problem. One day, as
she was cleaning her apartment, her eyes were broadened. She spotted
the long-forgotten mail publicizing private money-lending. The ad
said, “We can help you solve your financial problem with easy,
unlimited loan.” The words struck the naive college girl. Without any
second thought, she picked up the phone. Even until the last moment,
she did not comprehend exactly what kind of predicament she would be
forced into by signing the adequate-in-appearance, yet lacking-clarity
contract .
The importunate calls ceased, and luckily, one of Tiffany's new rich
friends introduced Tiffany to a higher-paying job as a secretary at
her father's law firm. It was not absolutely perfect, but the new life
seemed plausible and satisfying. Tiffany could still shop at Gucci if
she balanced her income and spending and controlled credit card
usages. If she met another shortage, help was available always. She
was proud of herself for settling into the new environment
successfully. Credulous-natured Tiffany considered the changes to be
positive and suitable.
In the midst of all the events, a semester almost passed and
Christmas was coming. Planning to surprise her family back in
hometown, Tiffany went shopping Christmas presents. She returned with
hands full of bags. At the night of the exhausting day, she snugged
into a warm blanket to watch T.V. The news was on. It was reporting on
a notorious loan-shark group who disguised as a legal institution. The
reporter warned of more possibly existing usurers who present false
documents to deceive gullible people in desperate need of immediate
financial relief.
As if being snapped out of a hypnosis, Tiffany was now disillusioned.
She was concerned about her resource. She tried to compare the
description provided by the news with the contract she had signed.
Things tallied accordingly. No matter how hard she tired to shake off
the doubt, the apprehension were to be reality. Biting her nails, an
old habit of her showing anxiety, she was carried into a deep sleep in
the blanket.
In the dream, she was placed in the loan-sharks' office confronting
the boss. He demanded her money blown up to a doubled amount due to a
large interest. The man even intimidated her with scary threats such
as extracting her kidney and selling it in case she could not pay the
sum. With the men in the room grinning at her, the scene changed to
that of a familiarity. Tiffany was back in her room.
The dream was not just an ordinary effect of REM sleep. It was a
sign, a warning demanding her repentance. Grasping the meaning of her
predicament, she began to self-reflect. The problem was huge, but she
had to find a way to end it after all. The answer was obvious. She had
to stop perpetuating lavishness and confess the problem to her
parents. The compensation was great with no doubt, but she finally
committed to take the price for what she had done.
On Christmas that year, Tiffany went to see her family as planned. At
home, she spilled out her misbehavior and asked for forgiveness. For
the next several years, she studied hard to graduate from college.
When she did, Tiffany got a job which allowed her pay back the heavy
price of profligacy.

Essay 2

The Seeds of Crisis
No doubt our America is in crisis. We are suffering a crash in

the economy since the great depression. We are seeking solutions

to problems a mammoth babel. There is too much damage like a

post-war. Bacevich writes about where the seeds of profligacy

were planted. Also adding that Americans are addicted to oil and

that is also why we are where we are. He adds to his statement

"President after president has said that we will not consume

from foreign oil" not relying on the next president's coming.
There is also evidence of his argument of profligacy " During

the carter years, the federal deficit had averaged $54.5 billion

and during the Reagen era, deficits skyrocketed, averaging

$210.6 billion over the course of Reagen's two terms in office"

(Bacevich,p.39)It's certain that America is addicted to foreign

oil because the people want it. It's vendetta grabbing you by

the throat and never letting go.

Americans are big consumers, of course. With 3 to 5 credit cards

in their coat wallets and pursues they stand in line five hours

for the next Playstation. The next Ipod and Iphone. We love

foreign products. Many consider credit cards very helpful but

others take an evil advantage to shop without limits and create

a big debt in their credit history. As Reagen notice this

addiction he added "Credit has no limits, and the bills will

never come due." (Bacevich,p.36) advocating this consuming

habit. Making companies abroad like Sony even richer. If this

did not happen, perhaps America would be the pioneer to these

products were urging to save so then we can buy.

The people of America are not the only to blame. If there's

anyone else it would be the government for being so shallow.
"Congress responded to budget imbalances not by trimming

spending or
increasing revenues but by quietly and repeatedly raising the

debt ceiling- by $3.015 trillion between 2002 and

2006"(Bacevich, p.65) As this evidence would have shocked any

other person besides politics, it was a little mess not one

person wanted to pick it up. Bacevich states that the reports

were ignored in Washington. If this had prevented, there could

have been a time to think if the war in Iraq can finaly be

stopped. Money for funds were wasting fastly every week. All of

this is the cause of a crash in today's American Economy.

Today Obama is trying to heal the wounds. First, the debt with China.
He has to figure out how to pay them back. Second, comes his promises
of free healthcare. It's an enormous task

for the president to resolve. The crash in the job market has

caused businesses to go bankrupt because people are losing jobs

and that is why money is not moving around so much. It's tough

getting back on our feet. We don't wish to spend so much now

because we now have our limits. Statistics shows that since he signed
the stimulus package, jobs have gone up and unemployment has fallen a
few percents. He promised change and that is what America is waiting
for.

Short Story PAUL

Paul is a cheerful father that no fly or hot weather can
exasperate him. Paul and Martha are married for twenty years. After
their first daughter they decided to only have one child because they
had traveled as nomadic people for 13 years after their daughter was
born. Martha saw as her responsibility to work and could not find a
proper time to conceive another child. Paul worked as a construction
worker and Martha had waitresses jobs during that time. Paul didn’t
have much luck with finding a stable job while living a nomadic life
with his wife.
Brenda is their twenty year old daughter in college with in interest
to speak in front of a court room after Law school.
It’s supper time, and the family are discussing their financial
issues.
Paul was home early that night. He says “Martha, how was your day,
sweetheart? You haven’t spoken much.” Is there something wrong? She
replies “No. It’s just that I went to look for a part-time job at the
new mall in Los Feliz and had no luck. Now I know how people feel”
Paul looks at her and pauses before drinking his soda pop and says
“well, why is that?” Brenda replies “Well, I walked in every store and
restaurant and had no luck. I was exhausted by just walking the 2nd
floor in the mall. That place is very ritzy and enormous. I even
stopped at restaurants on my way home, but no one wants anybody to
work for them right now” Paul watches Brenda in dismay and says “I
don’t mean to be rude but it’s not easy making those thirty dollars I
give you every week for gas. Use your car to go to school and return
home, sweetheart. Your mother and I prefer if you just focus on
school, since that is enough stress already for you.” Martha puts a
plate on the table for Brenda. “Your father is right” she says. We are
getting by with the money your father makes. With the crash in the job
market who knows when you’ll be able to find a job. Look at your
father. My brother Jimmy gave him a job even when times are tough for
him, too. It’s depressing out there. Right now… everyone is relying
on luck. It’s just a matter. First person in line gets the job, next
person goes next door. ” Paul says “You know I work for your uncle
Jimmy only four days out of the week. I have nothing left at the end
of the month but at least we eat good chicken and have a shack we call
home to laugh at” (Everyone laughs) Brenda, “Yeah… That’s good stuff
there, old man. I’m proud of you dad. And in a couple of years I’ll
take care of the worries. Gosh, now I know what it is to be a
struggling American nowadays. I would hate to experience this again. I
mean, you go out there confident that you’re going to find a job and
in that day you’re willing to hunt for a job for several hours and
then you get nothing out of it. You’re back home disappointed” Paul
sarcastically says “likewise feeling when I come home from an
exhausting day and taste an overcooked meal made by your mother”
Brenda bursts out of laughter. Martha laughs along and thinks. “How
about the time when we were dating I wanted the big bear at the
carnival, and you couldn’t even toss at least 4 rings in those
bottles. Those bullies tossed eight more than you. I had to go home
with a water gun like a four-year old” Paul replies “Oh, I didn’t win
because I wanted to leave to catch The Brady Bunch” He finishes his
dinner. “Brenda, are you gonna finish that chicken?” “No dad, I’m not
hungry after all” replying as she is still laughing. Martha says “well
alright. I got nothing else. Ms. No Prize from the 1994 Barstow
carnival wants to go and laugh at the Spanish talk shows before she
goes to sleep. They’re hilarious.” Kisses Paul and Brenda good night.
Brenda “Good night mom. Dream good times with your water gun” Martha
is walking away to her room “screw you. No ice cream if you if you
didn’t eat your supper” She heard you ha ha. They both laugh.
Next morning they all are at the table eating breakfast not
discussing much.
Brenda finishes first and runs to her room to grab her stuff because
her ride to school arrived.
Enters the kitchen and kisses them good-bye. A few minutes after Paul
finishes up and excuses himself from the table. “I have to go now. I
got work today with Jimmy” Ok says Martha. Robert from the restaurant
called me telling me not to come in for work today.” Paul looks at her
in dismay. “One more day without pay” Martha says “ I know, Paul. Go
without worrying about tomorrow. I’ll go and beg to work even if they
call me” Paul smiles and says bye darling.
It’s supper time again and Brenda has a topic to discuss for the
night. You know I had my Political Science class today. Paul says “
Really? What was the topic of the day?”
Brenda replies “Profligacy” Paul rolls his eyes backwards “Huh! Yup,
you mean America was the topic. Yeah, It gets worse until we have a
mule in office. “Nu-cu-lar” he says sarcastically. I have seen the
statistics president after president. But I am not much interested in
politics since the government doesn’t care about us the poor. They
want to take away all these benefits we have. These things are rights
that we have. I can’t afford medication when I need it. I need free
Medicare. I mean look at me and your mother. We are both first
generation Polish-American. I saw my father struggle and working hard
to put food on the table like you see me now. It should have been the
way I wanted it. But I failed.” Brenda dislikes where his father is
going and interrupts and says “yeah, well this war in the Middle East
is the reason why Americans are suffering. It’s sad to know that the
“Land of Opportunity” is in a huge debt during my generation. We
borrow and don’t know if we’ll be able to pay China back. It’s a lot
of money. On top of that, things are getting more expensive.” Paul
says “ Yeah… A ten dollar bill is not enough to dine out with someone
anymore. A happy meal is more like a dull meal for me. And let’s not
talk about gas prices rising every time I glance at it. Oh, no, no,
no! That’s why I don’t want to look away anymore ha ha” Brenda, “Dad
you are so cheerful” Paul says “ well, you have to. There is no better
feeling for the tired heart during times like today” Brenda smiles at
his father and continues to stare as he starts to eat his dinner. She
dreams of a day where they are out of misery and own a mortgage.
Living happier. She smiles again and with optimism she begins to eat.
Paul suddenly has a thing in mind and rises his head and proudly says
“You know what, Brenda. I’m going to be the one who gets us out of
this. It’s not going to be you, princess. I am going to get my butt up
tomorrow morning and work, work, and work. Some how, perhaps by some
divine miracle not only am I going to work hard, I might even find a
job that pays very nicely. I am going to get us a better life but I am
going to make you so proud that you could never compete. I have a
dream. (Laughs) That a man like me can bring change. Brenda in shock
laughs and says “Yeah! Nice speech that, but carrot top can pull it
off better” They all laugh.
Paul’s dream motivated Brenda to study harder at school. She thought
of her dad every time she felt down and exhausted with school. Her
father is her inspiration. The inspiration from her father accompanied
her to Law School at the University of Southern California. As for
Paul, he received a job offer as part of the management team for an
electronic store. One year later, Paul and Jimmy with an approved loan
opened their own business of electronics. Brenda received her Masters
Degree then later got a job at a Law Firm in Manhattan, New York. Five
years later, Paul and Jimmy successfully expanded their business
across California. Three years later, Paul and Jimmy broke a world
record for fastest business to expand nationwide and got media
recognition. Paul had over 450 stores in America. The Headquarter
office is in Manhattan and in his office he has a banner saying “
This is what I promised you, Brenda.”

Part 1

True Meaning of Freedom
Gas price rocketing up, Oil crisis coming back after 35 years,
Soaring gas price hitting new records, Coming of the second great
depression, Panic of 2008, The crash of 2008, Black week... In May of
Alexis De Tocqueville (1863, p. 164) once depicted the new stream of
profligacy very concisely in his book Democracy in America. He wrote,
“In the United States, a man builds a house in which to spend his old
age, and sells it before the roof is on; he plants a garden and
[rents] it just as the trees are coming into bearing; he brings field
into tillage and leaves other men to gather crops.” While many wealthy
middle-class men appeared in the era, some were tragically excluded.
In a protest against their employers,
some young mill women charged their factory owners as “the oppressive
hand of avarice [that] would enslave us” (Foner, 2008, p. 346).
Another change in freedom's purport came when America was introduced
with what is now its core political ideology: “manifest destiny.” This
time, the infection laid a new path of political policy. The phrase
conveyed that the United Stated had a divinely assigned mission to
expand the territory to overspread democracy, “the development of the
great experiment in liberty” (Foner, 2008, p. 334). Another profligacy
paradox was to come. In 1803, President Jefferson made a historical
real-estate bargain through Louisiana Purchase. Regardless of his
belief in midget government for maximum individual freedom, the
financial prosperity the territory would bring forth was tempting
enough for Jefferson to abandon his conviction. To Jefferson,
achieving economic well-being, thus needing more land seemed to
coincide with the ideal meaning of freedom, the right to pursue
happiness. However, in the name of deteriorated freedom, many Indians
and blacks in Louisiana territory now had to suffer their own loss of
freedom. The event also set an innovating precedent in foreign policy:
To satisfy the hungry American appetites, any means were available
even if they intruded other individuals' freedom. Bacevich viewed the
newly defined characteristic of U.S. foreign policy as “pragmatism”
coupled with “opportunism,” financial benefits in the case of
Louisiana Purchase, rather than “idealism,” the true sense of freedom
(Bacevich, 2008, p. 22). As another bitter result, the incident made a
precedent in giving the president more authority than what was
mentioned in Constitution.
Bacevich called them the “Wise Men,” (p. 101) who took up seats in
Washington without the publics' will but the president himself. “The
government of the people, by the people, for the people” met a
hindrance due to its commander of chief overexerting his freedom. This
problem gave birth to many wars in the past. Among them, Iraq War and
the War in Middle East turned out to be the most disastrous which yet
dispensed another paradox. A resolution which passed immediately on
the day of its submission by the House of Representatives and the
Senate without any amendment and with a huge majority's agreement
brought up an issue of “expressing support for all Iranian citizens
who embrace the values of freedom, human rights, civil liberties, and
rule of law, and for other purposes” (McCain, 2009). Along with its
limited support for Iranians who seemed favorable to this country, the
bill condemned those who demonstrated against the U.S. policy and
Iranian government's suppression of free communication. American
government is already notorious for its wire-tapping and interfering
communication through the Internet or cellphones. How can a man ask
another to take the speck out of the eye when he himself has a plank
in his own eye?

Lola’s New life
It was the beginning of summer; Lola had just finished a tennis
match.
Rewarding herself for such a long and triumph game a shopping spree
was her primary agenda. The search for an entirely new wardrobe of
summer gear quit costly but money is not a thing thanks to her
parents’ prominent business. Mr. and Mrs. Sheridan ran chain of
luxurious hotels known as The Palace; these hotels have been in
existence for at least sixty years now. Lola had no clue as what
struggle her parents had to undergo to get to where they are today.
All she knew was that she had money to burn. Being the only child in
her mid twenties, young, and very attractive Lola had access to
whatever her hearts desired. She figured she would be able to achieve
an even greater success by starting her own clothing line since that
was her favorite adventure in life and this would grow into a chain
of
boutiques all around the world. Unfortunately, without any effort or
knowledge of working for it, she developed a demeaning attitude of
arrogance and obvious pleasure of putting others down to uplift
herself, putting her in a state of loneliness except for her one true
friend whom she grew up with and is just about had enough her.
Felicia
an offspring of the Jordan’s, who resides just across the street from
Lola, grew up to be able to take care of her self at all times no
matter how much money her parents made. She repeatedly tried to be an
example to Lola and even encouraged her to start setting goals that
did not involve her parent’s income. Nevertheless, Lola replied, “I
don’t want for anything when the time comes I’ll do what is necessary
to maintain my livelihood. “Do you not think it is time to grow up
and
be more responsible? Your parents cannot live forever. “Cried
Felicia,
Oh, this is only the beginning just because you’ve been in school for
lord knows how many years don’t try to make me a victim of such a
tedious responsibility, Lola sarcastically replies, Ok you’ll see and
when you do don’t come crying to me ok? Says Felicia, You know Mrs.
Sheridan always warns you to be prepared for whatever comes. This
means to have priorities and not accessories. All you do is shop,
shop, and shop some more. You do not even have room for all that
stuff.” “Don’t you worry about what I have Lola shouted,” Ok Lola,
but
maybe she knows something you do not care to be concerned with. Oh
yeah like what Felicia, maybe the business is not prospering like it
used to you know the economy is getting worst.
The next day, Lola’s parents had informed her that there was a
business issue with one of the hotels in Boston and they were flying
out there right away. Ms. Sheridan says, we will be back in two weeks
darling if anything goes wrong just let the Jordan’s know I am sure
they will be willing to help you. Ok mom, hope everything’s ok, says
Lola. She starts her day as any other usual day this time she went
out
and brought herself a new car with the petty cash her mom and dad
left
in the safe a total of $50k. As she cruises down the neighborhood,
she
stops by Felicia’s drive way and blows the horn. With her eyes as
wide
as a fish out of water, wows you have done it again Lola, Oh please
none of that I need a means of transportation besides the car dealer
gave me a great discount, which leaves me with some extra cash to
splurge. Oh you have done enough splurging as it is says Felicia,
where are you headed? “No where in particular why did have some place
in mind, Lola replies, “Hey lets go check out the local community
colleges and see what strikes our interest. Oh, Felicia your so hard
on why can’t you let that go today maybe another time please I’m
still
young and want to enjoy my youth., Yeah but your not getting any
younger Felicia replies, Whatever girl, let’s go parade the streets
on
the way to the beach and maybe put up some associates on the way.
Sure
Lola, you will try the college scene if I have to gag and bound you
and put you in your own trunk of your car. The plans turned out to be
a lot of fun in the sun and not once did Felicia preach the same old
sermon to Lola during their hot fun. The evening creped upon them
like
a thief in the night, on the way home Lola gets a call on her cell.
Hello Lola, Mrs. Sheridan told me to inform you that she and Mr.
Sheridan will be arriving a lot earlier than they had planned and
would like to have a important talk with you as soon as they arrive.
Ok and whom am I speaking with, Lola replies, oh this is one of their
assistance from The Palace hotel, my name is Jane. Well how soon will
they be arriving? Says Lola, First thing tomorrow Morning eight am.
Thanks I will be waiting. Lola replies with a slight crack in her
voice, bye.
The next morning, Mr. and Mrs. Sheridan knocks on Lola’s door awaking
her from a good sleep. Mrs. Sheridan comes in with the smile that
tells her everything is going to be all right saying, Good morning
pudding pie, did you get a nights rest? Sure mom what did you want
to
talk about? Well your father and I have been going through some
really
rough times the last year or so and the business is not what it use
to
be, What Lola interrupts and says have you been talking with Felicia
is this some kind of hoax? No sweet heart your mom and I are going to
sell the hotels and venture out to new avenues and we think you
should
do the same. Oh no, you mean no more shopping and living in the lap
of
luxury without a care in the world. Darn Felicia said this would
happen, so now what do I do? Well honey what do like doing? Good
question, I love to shop, tennis has always been one of my favorite
hobbies but other than that, I have never considered anything like
this before. However, Felicia has been poking at me about going to
college I guess I could learn to be a fashion designer gnaw that
would
take to long build clientele, maybe I could study to be huh, I don’t
know. What do you think mom? Honey I think you should consider
college, go in undecided and I guarantee you come up with something.
You have enough clothes to last at least three years and I see
you’ve
bought a new car it looks like everything is laid out for you all you
have to do is make the first step kiddo you can do it I’m counting on
you. Now go ahead and commit yourself to a brand new way of living.
Mom, dad, I am home. We are in here dear, how was your day
sweetheart?
It was fantastic, boy these two years sure have paid off, and you are
looking at a soon to be graduate from Santa Monica community College.
Oh, congratulations baby I knew you could do it. Thanks dad and mom
for sticking with me I even have a job lined up that will support me
in my next four years to earn my Bachelors. Even though I have taken
advantage of the both of you I’d like to make it up guys somehow
honestly I owe you my life. Thank you for everything and I love two
so
much!

I have never thought this is the way my life would turn out. In
truth,
this is not what I joined for.
This is not how I imagined a soldier’s life would be. In my head, I
pictured a fun and action-packed scene--almost a scene from a game,
maybe from “Gears of War“. And after the “game”, would come the
immortal honor. I’ve never considered that with this “honor”
actually
came with unforgettable pain, dark memories, and torturing
reflection.
My intention was never to kill, to end someone’s life, or even
to
hold one’s life at my mercy. Like anybody who wants to have dignity
in their life at least once, joining the army may be the only open
door for someone like me. It isn’t because I’ve never considered
other
options. It’s just that the idea of owning a “blue purple” gave me
that perpetual self-worth--like I could never go wrong again. An
army’s honor will always be attached to my name. That is true for the
most part only the bigger part of the ice berg (the one that is
unseen) lies the darker horror. The guilt, the bitterness, the anger
has no deliverance. Not even with God.
Don’t get me wrong though. Even though my original intent was
a
little bit selfish, I did my job well. So well that sometimes I feel
the purpose of my job did not deserve such over-the-top obedience
and
diligence. There was a time when it felt like I lend my blood and
sweat for the wrong cause. Or maybe it really was for the wrong
cause. I’m not sure. Someone could accuse me for not seeing things
beyond the limits of my own unfortunate character. But I know this,
doing things because of someone’s order without knowing why you’re
doing it for or the after-effect certainly let me witnessed life’s
greatest tragedies.
The most tragic part so far (in my case, at least) is not
because I
could never return in the past to correct my mistakes, it is this: to
continue doing what I am ordered to do even after all this rude
awakening-
like a helpless child who could not defy his own parent’s wicked
wishes. But this is what I signed up for, no matter how naïve I was,
and to see through the end is part of a man’s dignity. My dignity.

Walnut Creek was the perfect place to raise a family, with
magnet schools, friendly churches and one of the lowest crime rates
in
the state; a picturesque suburbia that drew many young promising
families within its hearth.
The Owens originated from Oregon where Bradley and Ann went to
college, met and subsequently fell in love, married quickly and had

marriage, just before Cooper’s second birthday Bradley had hopes of
following his dream of owning his own restaurant. After receiving a
phone call from an old school buddy about a foreclosed restaurant on
the outskirts of San Francisco, and the recent budget cuts at the
intermediary school where Ann was scheduled to part-time hours this
move south to follow Bradley’s dreams appeared to be just what the
family needed; a promising new perspective of better things to come.
With Ann’s M.A. in Sociology from Pepperdine she was sure to find a
job that suited her quickly and so the three set off South on the
nine
and half hour drive, which turned into thirteen due to all the
frequent bathroom breaks and restaurant stops, to start their new
life, in a new town full of hope.
8 years later…………
Bradley’s restaurant Bella was booming and with the addition
of their
new daughters Michelle (6) and Destiny (4 ½ ) and Ann’s new fulltime
position at the nearby community college, the Owens were happier than
ever.
“With great success, comes great responsibility”
-
Unknown
Bradley was looking to expand Bella and open a new restaurant to take
advantage of the restaurant’s rising popularity and the influx of new
residential developments on the far side of the city. While driving
on the outskirts of Walnut Creek it became apparent that the quality
of life lowered and the more fortunate families resided in the quaint
area where the Owens lived. He watched as dozens of homeless gathered
together, huddled, keeping warm in the winter air that was so bitter.
Bradley’s eyes meandered along the sidewalk off to the north east
side
of the street, he suddenly felt a deep sense of guilt and emptiness
deep within that ripped him out of his day dreams of expanding the
restaurant and taking family vacations. The light was red but
Bradley’s attention was focused elsewhere and if it weren’t for the
scared eyes of the homeless darted directly in front of his car the
tragedy about to ensue would have been much worse for the little girl
walking across the street. Screeching to a stop, his palms burned as
he gripped the steering wheel, as if his efforts would have stopped
the car in time. Running out of the car he saw Sarah, she looked no
older than nine with a stuffed rabbit laid out next to her she was
sprawled out on the floor with coins splayed in every direction out
from her. Nickels, dimes, quarters, pennies, some still rolling
towards the gutter as Bradley gasped in horror at what had just
occurred.
Many of the homeless came to help Sarah and dragged her away
before
Bradley had much a chance to speak to her and make sure if she was
ok. Strangely no one asked for insurance, no one called the police
and no one made any attempt what so ever to get the little girl to a
hospital. He attempted to go over the group surrounding the Sarah
but
some of the men insisted he get back in his car and go on his way,
“None a-yer business Mr.” “Sarah will be ok; we’ll be ok”, assured
one
of the men. They all disappeared into this abandoned building and
were gone. Disillusioned and horrified by what his carelessness had
allowed, he got back in his car, drove a few blocks before
practically
puking in his lap.
Weeks had passed since the accident and not a word was spoken
to Ann
about what had happened. Bradley started taking Sunday’s off work
and
began looking into the area where he had hit the young girl. In the
morning paper Bradley saw the article of a young girl who had died
from trauma to the head after being in a coma for 26 days; her name
was Sarah and she had died twelve dies shy of her ninth birthday.
Grief stricken and filled with guilt for what he had done, he told
himself that somehow he would try to fix things. He spent the next
six months remodeling his whole restaurant and decided to make it a
soup kitchen for the poor, where the hungry could come and get
shelter
from the cold and “chicken soup for the soul”. He was able to get
outside funding from Ann’s school which supported this cause. In
addition he kept his the profitable part of his Bella open on the
weekends to offset the enormous financial drain it was to keep
running
a non-profit food shelter for the homeless.
1 year later……..
It seemed like a good idea when he started it, but it seems
that the
homeless seemed to multiply and instead of the shelter being a place
for the hungry to take get full and figure things out, it was just
another place to hang out. It turned into an overcrowded over run
slop house which began to become an eyesore on the city.
3 months later……..
Crime rose 4% in Walnut Creek and homeless from San Francisco where
migrating towards Bella for the free food.
1 month later…......
Real estate values dropped in the area, Bradley lost his funding from
Ann’s school when Ann lost her job due to the inevitable budget cuts
when people started moving their kids out of the area.
2 weeks later…….
Ann ended up leaving Bradley for neglecting his own family and
devoting all his time to the food shelter, four days later she filed
for divorce and moved in with her Mother in Los Feliz. In the end,
Bradley became everything that he was trying to save; a homeless man,
with no family, no hopes, and no pride.

ESSAY 2_Short story
Title: The Girl Next Door: overindulgence
Jeannie and Susan are cackling away together for hour.
“You know Jane, right? I envy her that she can live without worry
about the money for her whole life, and I talked about her to one of
my co-worker, and she said her husband’s income will be above a
million a year.” Jeannie rang off before Susan could answer.
All of a sudden anger swelled in her. She says to herself, she’s not
as pretty as I am, nor is she a great genius. She was very determined
to get married to a guy who makes of money at least half a million a
year. Lately, Jeannie is seeing Thomas. He is an investment banker.
And she is in monitoring him, actually his ability. She knows today
is
his payday.
She is picking up a phone, and calling him.
Don't you miss me? Of course, I do. why don't we meet today?
Then let's see at starbucks. Do you know that place? Wilshire and
Serrano?
Ok, come to starbucks by 10. After meeting one of my customer, I will
be there.
At starbucks, Thomas is waiting her. Why is she not coming?
It’s already half an hour past.
After half an hour, Thomas sees the Jeannie comes to the door.
Why are you so late? I've been waiting for you for an hour.
Oh, god! All girls' take long time to get ready. I took shower and
massage, make-up and chose clothes to wear... I had a lot of things
to
do.
Ok, right, I see.
I even not had breakfast because I was too busy to get ready. What's
the time, now?
It's 11, you might be so hungry. Are you ok to drink coffee? do you
want have some sandwich? Gees! No, I don't eat that thing.
I want have a tall cafe mocha with some bread.
press the shutter, now.
After satisfying her appetite, she suggests, ok, then let's go for
shopping.
In front of the department store, she walks ahead and he is
dragged.
Hurry, you're walking so late. Finally, she goes back and drags him.
At a cosmetics shop, she says, “I got freckled because of UV light.
I
need to buy skin whitening lotions.”
I can't see nothing on your face. Your skin is so good.
No, I should take care of it as soon as possible. I heard the
cosmetics of that store are nice.
What? Channel? what is that?
It's not channel, it's Chanel. How come you don't know it?
I haven't used that things...bought it anyway…
Hey, look this clothes. Isn't it beautiful?
huh... right... it's nice...It looks that it will suit me, doesn't
it?
No, not really... Once Jeannie stares him… yes, it looks nice on you.
Ok, then let's buy it. You pay for it.
By the way... I think Louis Vuitton's bag goes well with this one.
Don't you think so? He is at a stand. What are you doing? let's go to
Louis Vuitton shop.
What? How about buying an imitation? What? what do you take me for?
After all is said and done, they go to Louis Vuitton store.
She is very glad. It looks so perfect on me! you gonna buy that for
me, right?
it's too expensive... i don't have that much money.
I no doubt you can afford buy it for me.
There is no choice nothing but paying by credit card.
Once he gets home, he founds his wallet is empty
Whereas, she is murmuring, “Most beautiful women are superficial, at
least I’m being up front about it.”

Us – for the years to come
“The fiscal year 2009 budget is enormous; the 10- year projection is
clearly unsustainable; and the long term outlook is dire and
increasingly urgent” – says William G. Gale, an economist at the
Brookings institution, in an article posted in the New York Times
newspaper on July 7, 2009 named “Staggering budget gap and a
reluctance to fill it”. It seems that our economy is at the lowest
point in its downfall, but according to economists, it can and will
get worse in years to come. Any person with even the slightest
understanding of our situation has proposed ways to solve this
“puzzle” and we have read endless number of analysis on our economy
and our way of living. Our planet is wearing out and it is just as
important for us to battle global warming as it is to cut back on
spending, which is the main reason we are in this situation to begin
with. I think I can safely say that the word “change” has gained a
new
importance in our lives. Barack Obama’s slogan has given millions
hope
for a better life, even for those who can’t define what exact changes
are needed for a better economy, thus, the better life. Even with the
endless number of proposed ways of solution for our economy, spending
and debts, not much of them seem to have a potential to be effective,
and we are still not able to come to an agreement and really start
doing something towards our goal. Everybody is waiting for that big
break that will magically make all our troubles disappear. Some
solutions however been blamed to be too simple or too small for that
great change to happen. considering that not much of proposed
solutions seem to work, we are left with not much options, and among
the few choices battling global warming and cutting back on spending
seem to be two of the most effective. Andrew J. Bacevich, an author
of several books, a war veteran and a professor of international
relations at Boston University, confirms these solutions and urges
Americans to start acting. In addition to Bacevich, number of other
economists has confirmed these solutions to be the potential way to
success. And what’s important is that we need to act on long term
goals since the messes of our doing is too great to be cleaned out
soon.
Rich Tucker - an editor in Washington DC and a columnist for
townhall.com, on the other hand, proposed in his article of January
23, 2009 that working to advance the energy saving technologies,
while
gaining leadership of the field to enhance national security is not a
way to go. On the contrary he says:”Our country has a serious
problem,
and it’s time to set the pieties of environmental activists aside.
That’s why our new president favors economic growth – even if that
ends up generating more CO2”. Although Tucker manages to criticize
the
solutions proposed he doesn’t think of one himself or at least he
doesn’t let us know about his intentions. Nicolai Gogol – a great
Russian writer and philosophist once said:”It is no use to blame a
looking glass if your face is awry”. It is no use to criticize the
person who had said the truth about our economic and political
situation straight out, because with or without blaming Bacevich our
hobbled economy is still going to be the same, unless we do something
about it. Any argument is not an argument if it doesn’t prove that
the
other thing is wrong or incorrect. Again, Mr. Tucker says that our
president favors economic growth over saving the environment and
financing energy efficiency research. It is a pity that President
Barack Obama proposed a climate change bill on June 34, 2009. The
article reporting the meeting of house members to discuss the issue
was posted in la times on 25th of June, 2009:” Obama has intensified
his lobbying effort ahead of an expected house vote Friday on a
democratic energy proposal designed to reduce greenhouse gas
emissions
sharply by 2050. The plan is president’s most ambitious legislative
priorities…” If the bill goes through and gets approved we can safely
assume that we starting out a long journey on a right way, and we can
hope for a better future. Researching and developing auto efficiency,
energy saving technologies is a field that is growing not a decade by
decade but minute by minute, every country is striving to get ahead.
Our natural resources are at a point where they are simply not able
to
fulfill everyone’s luxuries. “The earth provides enough to satisfy
every man’s need, not every mans greed”- said a famous Indian
philosopher mahatma Gandhi.
There are a lot of economists, politics, writers and
professor
arguing on how to solve the problem of our economy and budget and how
to get out of the very deep grave that we dug for ourselves. Peter s.
Goodman of New York Times newspaper says: “On one point alone no
debate is required: the United States already owes staggering sums of
money and will soon owe more”. Which makes me wonder on what’ll
happen
after that “soon” expires? Are we going to say:”soon well owe more”?
Again? As Gale said in this age and time long term thinking and
actions are required. If we cannot hope for a better economy and life
today, we should be worrying and making plans to have a better
tomorrow. We owe great amounts of money to other countries and we are
leading our lavish lives by barely paying the interest on those
debts,
and yet Mr. Goodman says in his article:”some economists are already
arguing that with unemployment near double digits, the government
must
consider giving another dose of stimulus spending now, despite the
fact that this will add to the deficit”. I don’t understand how some
people can think to keep borrowing more, when it is clear that we are
just falling further down with every borrowed dollar. A smart man on
a
verge of losing everything he had, doesn’t borrow money to eat steak
every day, when the disposal of that steak would be the same as
anything else, but he puts himself in debt because he invests it in
something that will pay off in the future, and now his losses doesn’t
seem as bad, because even though his today is the worst day he can
hope for a better tomorrow.
It is not going to be just this generation of people that are
occupying this planet, there are going to be millions more, and it is
our responsibility to save our planet for our future, just as
important to keep their independence from other countries by not
putting in them into an endless debt. The United States of America is
the land of freedom, our ancestors have fought for it for hundreds of
years and many lost their lives for it. But it seems that we have
striven for freedom so much that we have lost the sense of it, the
true meaning of what freedom meant for people who lost their lives
for
it. Freedom has become our ability to spend and consume more, “ for
the united states the pursuit of freedom as defined in an age of
consumerism, has induced a condition of dependence- on imported
goods,
on imported oil, and on credit” (Bacevich 173). Americans need to
understand that everything will run out. China is not going to lend
us
money forever, at certain point in time we have to start paying it
off. And now if we can’t even take care of our needs, we surely won’t
be able to pay trillions of dollars of debt. As the famous saying
goes:”better late than never”, even though we are in great debt we
need to start thinking how not to depend on others. We have the
resources and potential to get ourselves out if this situation and
fix
our economy. All we need to do is to concentrate on something that in
the long run will pay off, that is saving the environment and cut
back
on extra spending. Energy efficiency is going to be money efficient
as
well. So developing energy saving equipment will give us a break from
that dependency and leading this field will give us national
security.
“In a time when none of the options are good and nothing offers a
clear fix, the deficit weighs as one huge concern among many”- says
Peter Goodman. And truly now when everything is under a great deal of
pressure and with so many people concerned it is easy to get confused
and mislead, and at the same time we don’t want to pick a wrong way
worsen our deficit, which is why we need to pick the safest and the
most promising routes to our goal, as we can’t afford to take risks.

Days and Nights
“AAAAAAA! Enough already! I’m so tired of you lecturing me all the
time B’acie?!” – Mrs. Earthing heard the scream through the thick oak
door, smiling at the imagination of the scene that was happening in
the other room. She felt a little sorry for her little son, but she
had made up her mind to be firm this time, because she simply was
tired of him and wanted to teach him a lesson. Pipil – was the name
boy got after his great grandfather, and it was hard to believe that
16 years passed since Mr. Earthing was holding his son fitted in his
palms. “I wish he would always be that sweet little boy” – thought
Mrs. Earthing getting up from the porch seat and heading towards
kitchen, when she stopped to look across the road at the beautiful
garden of Meriel’s family. It was a sight to behold and Mrs. Meriel
was always in her garden, when as usual said from afar:”I will drop
by
the vegetables later today!” they both gave a sympathetic nod, and
Mrs. Earthing went in.
After the long lecture from B’acie Pipil went out of the library,
where the lecturing was being held, thinking and knowing that what
B’acie said was right, and yet for some unknown reasons he didn’t
want
to admit it. He went down the dark hall towards the kitchen, where
his
mother who was making dinner, and gave her a quick kiss thanking that
it wasn’t her that lectured him. Mrs. Earthing was never good at
being
upset and angry, which is probably why Pipil flew out the door
calling
for his dog Tank, in the middle of his mothers talk. When he was on
the front porch, he blew a kiss over to Mrs. Meriel who was still in
her garden, and thanked her for the great work she was doing. Pipil
sincerely enjoyed that garden, as it was not only beautiful to see
but
it was his “away” place, a place he could hide away from his troubles
while enjoying all sorts of fruit.
I’m off to see john! I’ll get the meat on my way back. Let’s go
Tank!”
– said Pipil leaving the house and the fury little friend followed
him
obediently. The small town of Overenbow was a peaceful little town,
where all 365 people knew each other as they were born and raised in
a
same family. Neither a lot of visitors came to this small town nor a
lot of people leaving. Everything they ate and wore enjoyment and
entertainment was the outcomes of their own doings. Everyone depended
on each other on something, which gave a perfect reason for them to
exchange their products and services in order to have everything they
need. Every little family was known for their “products” - Meriels
for
their loveliest garden and the most delicious vegetables, Beemersons
for their well strong horses, McCormick’s for their good meat and
eggs, and Macappies for their exceptional math skills, which was
necessary even in a small town and good memory as they remembered
every little thing including gossip. If the residents of Overenbow
had
a house big enough to fit them all, they would have all lived there,
because their separate houses now was merely their little rooms for a
big house for one family. The Earthing family was the youngest of the
families in town, and one of the very few who had a child that hadn’t
left for college.
John was not in his usual calm when Pipil got there, and yet it was
not at all surprising to Pipil as he knew his friend john very well.
John was a “genius” of this town and quite a few of his inventions
were used by many people, like his weather predicting device that was
honorably named by john – the wizard. “Hunting made easy!”-yelled out
the ambitious young man, and without even catching his breath
continued:”the wizard says it’s going to rain tomorrow, so we cannot
wait, we need to experiment on my new machine!”, and dragged Pipil to
follow him to the big old barn behind the house. Pipil didn’t ask any
questions as he knew that john would not disappoint him in a matter
of
surprising inventions.
When they finally got to the desired location however john stopped
and
said:”get ready to witness the making of “weapon of destruction”!!”
and opened the heavy barn doors. Pipil seemed neither surprised nor
excited, as he just stood there without saying a word, and finally
said without taking his eyes off the shooter:”are you sure the barn
is
a good idea?” to which the full grin of john answered wordlessly.
However, once Pipil woke up from his shock, he gave John such
questioning look that john hurried to explain:”well, it’s a shooting
device”- started john in his professor like tone, “you put this big
bullet here and light this end, after of which the energy produced by
the burning of this string is enough to make the bullet fly and the
bigger the bullet the bigger the explosion is going to be. Although
we
don’t need this weapon in Overenbow, it was just an idea that came to
be a weapon”. With this john closed the doors of the barn for no one
to hear, especially his parents. He loaded the weapon while
saying:”the explosion should not be big, so I think these cows should
be fine, what do you think?” to which Pipil still in a bit of shock
answered with a nod. The weapon of destruction was loaded and lit. It
was one of the most exhilarating moments when the bullet flew out the
barrel. It is a shame it lasted for about 5 seconds as the bullet
didn’t blow. It hit the heavy doors of the barn so hard that the
doors
almost broke down, and fell down the floor like a bag full of sand.
And so did John. Evidently the nerves of the boy weren’t as strong as
his brains. Pipil simply could not believe his eyes, for such a big
fellow to fall like that was a bizarre thing to see. He woke up after
a minute thought but he simply picked up the ball and went out the
barn after of which Pipil followed not knowing if he should laugh or
cry. He understood that john would want to be alone now which is why
he left without saying much except:” I’ll come see you tomorrow”. He
got the meat from John’s mom and left calling for tank.
The walk back was not as pleasant as it was earlier in a sense of the
experiments and yet he could not help but laugh at every time he
reminded himself of johns fainting. Pipil’s mind was occupied, and
lost his bag with the meat in when tank jumped at him to play. The
meat fell out the bag and tank, naturally, got to it. Pipil could
have
gotten it from him but tank looked so happily occupied with it and
seem to be enjoying it so much that he thought:”well at least one of
us is happy”, smiled and let the dog to finish with his dinner. In
fact, tank enjoyed it so much that his feast lasted for about an
hour,
after of which it was too late for Pipil’s dinner. Little did he knew
that he missed not only dinner but couple minorities that was going
to
be a lesson for the rest of his life.
A chatter of never before heard loudness was heard from outside the
wet window. Pipil jumped on his bed to see through the window what
was
going on. It was a rainy day, just as johns “weather wizard”
predicted
it was going to be, and through the clean glass of his little window
Pipil saw crowd of people gathered in front of Meriel’s house. And
right then and there he was filled with terror and shock. The garden
that was so loved and cherished by all was thrashed. Pipil run down
as
fast as he could, wondering of what could have caused such tragedy.
When he got there, barely dressed, it was still raining. With the
mud,
the rain and this dreadful picture of the destroyed garden the whole
scenery seemed as if it was mourning for God’s death, intensified by
the cheerless faces of this little town. When john saw Pipil coming
down, his face grew with such bizarre expression as if he never
wanted
to see Pipil. Yet the boys met and when Pipil noticed that people
started chattering even more when they saw him, john said:”mom and
dad
want to talk to you, I have told them that it was not your fault but
they still want to see you”. With that john led the way without even
noticing the wet pajamas that were barely hanging with the weight of
the heavy rain. “What’s going on? Are you all right?”- asked
concerned
Pipil, trying to wipe off the raindrops off his face. “Remember
yesterday, when we tried to shoot that weapon that I made?” – started
john, to which he got a shaky nod, “well, when the bullet hit the
door
it broke the lock and cracked the door, and when it started raining
last night the cows got restless, broke the door and got out. They
got
to Mrs. Meriel’s garden and ate everything they could and thrashed
everything else. And not only that they wrecked everything that was
in
their sight. Like I said I told mom and dad that it was not your
fault, and was wishing that you would just sleep the day away but I
had to tell you when you came down”.
When Pipil got home from a long conversation with johns parents, he
was greeted by an empty cold house. “The full description of a worst
day”- thought Pipil in vain, but when he saw B’acie through the back
window out in a backyard plowing earnestly, the day seemed to get a
little better. When he went out to see her he could see that she was
working hard as never before for such cold weather sweat drops were
apparent on her full nose. She wiped it off however when she stood up
to talk to Pipil. “Hello B’acie, where did mom and dad go?” – started
Pipil, “they went to Dr. Macappie. Tank wasn’t feeling well, he was
throwing up all day today”- answered the lady. She pulled back the
chair that was by the house and sat down for a little break. “Someone
must have given him raw meat, as he was throwing up with it all day.
Of course he would get sick; he is not used to such food!”-said
B’acie
in her usual agitation. “and now that the garden is thrashed Mrs.
said
that we have no choice but to grow our own vegetables, I don’t know
how are they going to afford it, naturally they would have to hire
someone” – continued B’acie as Pipil walked into the house. He went
to
the stairs that led to his room, and how long and dreary did it seem!
But if anything he knew about those stairs is that they would be
subjugated by taking a step at a time. And so he did.
Pipil’s eyes barely opened, after of what seemed to be a short nap,
to
a blurry figure of Mr. Earthing sitting in a chair across his bed.
Pipil rubbed his eyes in a bit of shock, and saw clearly that in fact
it was his father seating with a very distinguished expression over
his pale face. Mr. Earthing heard Pipil wake up as he turned away
from
the window and focused on his son. To a question:”is tank okay?” Mr.
Earthing answered:”he will be fine, but I want to have a talk with
you. Sit up straight”. To which of course Pipil obeyed. “You know
son,” started Mr. Earthing in his natural deep voice, “I don’t like
to
read you any lectures and directions on how to lead your life and
become a man, but it is the duty of a father to build the foundation
for you where you can make your own mistakes, and it is a concern of
a
resident of this town to watch over the actions of someone who can
bring harm to this town. Now I never thought you are a destructive
young man, but as every young man you can make harm without any
intent
for it. Let’s look at yesterday,” continued Mr. Earthling fixing his
seat cushion skillfully sewed by his wife “now I know John is a smart
kid, but even smart people make mistakes and it is up to his friend
to
let him know about his mistakes. Such a dangerous weapon is not to be
used anywhere near anything living especially people. Can you imagine
what it would have been like, how many people could have died if the
bullet really blew up? It is the mercy of god that it didn’t. Did you
think that it was okay to use such a thing?” – asked the father to
which Pipil honestly answered:”well I didn’t think it was a good idea
to try it in the barn but it was very amusing”. “Son such destructive
weapons are not to be used anywhere. What are you thinking to use it
for? To blow up things? And what good do you think could possibly
come
out of it? Our little town is a peaceful place and things of such
will
bring nothing but misfortune. Look, for example, if you two haven’t
done the experiment john would not have taken ill, the barn of johns
would still be fine and the cows would not have gotten out. And we
would still be getting our fruits and vegetables from the Meriel’s
garden if it was not spoiled so badly by the cows. Now we have to
hold
for saving for your college fund and hire someone until the Meriel’s
get their garden back. And why did you give yesterday’s meat to Tank?
I understand that you wanted to spoil him a bit, but you have to
understand that he is happy as he is. There is dog food and there is
human food.
Tank cannot eat our food because he is not used to it and he will get
sick and we cannot afford to give him our dinner. We are not rich
people but we are not poor either, we are and would be perfectly fine
as long as we live within our reach. And now john will not only be
the
person who wrecked the most beautiful garden but he will have to
carry
the name of someone who has tried to bring upon us such harmful
weapon. People don’t have to have neither too much nor too less to
be
happy, but just enough. Be smart and aware of the consequences of
their action. After all past is what we live by, present is what we
live in and the future - is what we live for”

Timon of Athens study guide

This link (http://www.snorko.org/timon.pdf) leads to a study guide on
Shakespeare’s play. This study guide was prepared by former students
and includes about five hundred pages of story summary and
illustrations as well as questions on reading comprehension, literary
analysis, grammar, and vocabulary.

Getting started with Timon of Athens may not seem easy. Push yourself
through the dialog between the Poet and the Painter. Read it a second
time later if you want, but don’t worry about it too much at first.

Basic reading comprehension: who says the following quote, what kind
of a person does it show the speaker to be, and how does this idea
compare to the ideas we’ve been discussing in the course so far?
“I'll pay the debt, and free him…This gentleman of mine hath served me
long:
To build his fortune I will strain a little”
Some of many sample ideas on these lines: here, the main character
Timon is spending money—a couple of many more examples to follow. In
the first instance, Timon says he is helping a worthy friend by paying
his debt. In the second, he says he is rewarding a loyal servant.
These actions both require money, but the motives behind and success
predicted to follow differ.
