Dear Campus/Community Leader,
On behalf of the Sierra Student Coalition, we are writing to invite you to
the New York State Climate Summit 2007, which will take place at Cornell
University on November 16-18, 2007. We are in a time of rapid social and
political change as the impacts of global warming become clear and the
need for immediate, strong action becomes more urgent. As you may know,
many states around the nation are leading on this issue, yet our federal
government has been reluctant to change the status quo of massive dirty
energy use. As a leading state in our nation, New York must be in line
with the most aggressive actions that other states are taking. And that?s
what we plan to achieve through this summit.
The New York State Climate Summit will unite campus and community
organizations in 1) training youth and active community members to run
effective campus and community campaigns around the issue of global
warming, and 2) agree on a state-wide strategy to pass S.5872, legislation
sitting in Albany that will mandate that New York reduces its greenhouse
gas emissions 80% below 1990 levels by 2050. With these two goals in mind,
we will energize campus and community campaigns for local victories around
the state and then follow a course of action that will get aggressive
legislation passed in Albany. This, in turn, will send a strong signal to
Washington, D.C. about what it needs to do to fight this urgent issue.
We are currently in the planning stages of the summit, and would like to
have your organization participate in the planning of the overall agenda
of the summit to incorporate the ideas and goals of constituencies around
the state. We have set up a Google Group for the planning of this summit
and will also have bi-weekly conference calls for the purpose of planning
beginning this week or next week, depending on availabilities.
If you would like to help plan the summit or simply be in the planning
Google list, please let us know by e-mailing or calling Carlos Rymer at
carlos...@gmail.com or 551-556-0189.
We hope to work with you in this amazing opportunity to set New York as a
leader on this pressing issue.
Cordially,
Summit Planning Team (Amanda Hass, Carlos Rymer, and Katherine McEachern)
