Description: Discussion group (mailing list) for the emoji4unicode open-source project.

emoji listing
BTW, I added the emoji set to the unicode utilities, so with the following you can see a listing by age. These are the Unicode characters mapped to by the emoji sources. There are 749, but the listing you see "flattens" the multicharacter mappings, so it has 729. And if you're lucky enough to have an emoji font, they should appear in all their glory in HTML...... more »

Flagoids: specific language UI buttons
Here's a current exhibit of why our emoji "flags" should not be considered symbols of flags. [link] Look down the righthand side of the page, to where the "TRANSLATE" buttons are for 6 languages. This is an example of changing localization practice, where UI designers, bit by the perils of the practice... more »

Emoji PDF charts
Dear Emoji enthusiasts, I have printed the HTML charts to PDF, using real fonts for the symbols rather than bitmap images. There is a new chart with the Emoji symbols proposed for new encoding, sorted by their preliminary, proposed Unicode code points, and omitting the carrier symbols data: [link]... more »

DOCOMO's comment
Dear emoji4unicode group members, NTT DOCOMO welcomes this initiative since it will dramatically improve the interoperability of emoji. Hand characters
...For this reason I would like to see the proposed Hand Signals emoji (e-B93-eBA1), not unified with already encoded characters, encoded together in a block with sufficient space left to accommodate the basic hand signs used in sign language, manual alphabets, and Indian dance, ritual and iconography as well. Since there is a great deal of... more »

Emoji: Moon symbols
Re: Moon Symbols (e-011 e-015) - it might be useful to set aside 28 characters in a general symbols area for encoding moon symbols. In some calendars different days of the lunar month can have a particular significance and are sometimes marked in an almanac or on a calendar by a symbol. (e.g. in the traditional Tibetan calendar the... more »

Freedial
The freedial symbol e-82B <#e-82B> now proposed for1F4BC is something that occurs widely in print in Japan. It should be coded in a location that not tied just with this emoji set, but whatever code space is slated for general symbols.

MUSICAL NOTE
Please add this to the per-character notes. Andrew asked: Will MUSICAL NOTE, ifencoded, have a compatibility decomposition to EIGHTH NOTE ? My reply: My counter-question: would that be helpful to anyone? A cross-reference would be one thing (that would be clearly helpful). A formal compatibility decomposition is something that is to be applied in... more »
