forward word on osx 10.8

Has anyone met this problem? when I intend M-f to move forward a word in an expression like

"instance.obj1.obj2.prop3"

initially the cursor is at the very left hand side of "instance". 

now if I press M-f, the cursor goes to the very right hand side of "prop3".
