Wondering if anyone has heard news of this little tyke. This pic was taken between Ely & Babbitt around 6:00 am. No mama in sight. Someone commented on seeing a baby moose alone & bleating on 21 in afternoon.

Dear Ms. Bocnuk,

Did you try calling the Kawishiwi Lab? Maybe they know something about the mother of the baby. With all of those ear tags it would lead me to believed that the mother is radio collared. Is there some way you can enlarge the photo to get a look at the numbers? These are just suggestions.

Hi Debby,

A group of us on the way to the Babbitt pool spotted this calf next to Hwy
21, south of Johnson Lake on Thursday morning around 6:15. (One of us took
the photo.) It appeared to be alone, and crossed the highway heading west.

I asked Shannon Barber-Meyer about it when I saw her later that AM and she
reported it to the DNR for us. Her contact at the DNR said that there have
been instances of moose mothers leaving calves behind (as was the case with
this one) and then either returning for them later or the calf catching up
with the mother. Abandonment happens sometimes too. This particular calf was
a twin, whose fellow calf was a distance away with the mother. The DNR was
monitoring it.

Sorry to hear that someone saw it again, alone on 21 in the afternoon. Hope
it has reconnected with the mother.

There was a good article by Dan Kraker of Minnesota Public Radio News in the
May 18 Echo about the DNR's interest in calves as part of their current
moose study.

Yes, the photo was taken by the Ely swimmers. The fact that it was still there, alone apparently, & bleating 6 hrs later was a bit of a concern. Thanks for the info.

FYI the Kawishiw Field Lab is closed and the Wolf-Deer Project (Dr. Shannon Barber-Meyer) is housed in the USFS complex. If you have any moose-related information, sightings, issues, the contacts for our area are Dawn Plattner and Tom Rusch at the Tower DNR office. They are involved in the adult moose collaring study and have contact with the moose calf collaring study folks.

That particular moose calf was recaptured by DNR staff later that same day and reunited with its twin.  I don't have an update on the situation beyond that.  This moose calf cause specific mortality and survival study is the focus of a PhD student's research from the U of MN Twin Cities, the MNDNR, and other researchers.  These calves were born to GPS-collared cows so they can track the mother's whereabouts and that is how they were able to recapture this calf and reunite it with the twin that had stayed closer to the cow.

Dear Jess,

Thanks for the news of the Kawishiwi lab being closed. I was unaware of its closing. I don't live in the Ely area anymore and haven't kept track of that stuff. Thanks again.

Sincerely,
Gregg Jennings
