Why not use Factory or better yet Inversion of Control (IoC) /
Dependency Injection (DI) patterns?

Make the logging method call via a interface class. Basicly have a
factory class in a seperate project which will figure out what
component to instantiate when a call to that interface is made. This

Hi,
does anybody tried rsyslog and has any experiences with it?
I'm a newbie in logging, so excuse me if my auestions are a bit
stupid, also in the fututre. :)

Is there any way to send an error to ELMAH without referencing the Elmah DLL to call ErrorSignal.Raise()? My goal is to keep ELMAH completely loosely coupled with the application.

The only way to stay independent of ELMAH is to simply add its logging module to your configuration and let it do its job of logging uncaught exception. Signaling was added due to popular demand where people wanted to explicitly invoke ELMAH's pipeline for filtering, logging, mailing and what not for a given error. Signaling allows you to take an explicit dependency on ELMAH but remain independent of how ELMAH is currently configured. I'm not so sure how this explicit coupling can be removed generally without you creating an abstraction within your own solution to insulate it from the dependency on ELMAH.

Yes, this is done automatically, but you can also set an application name in the web.config of each application. For example, if you're using SqlErrorLog, the configuration entry would look like this:

Yes, there are two ways to achieve this:
1. You setup each application for ELMAH. This involves dropping the ELMAH binaries into the bin folder of each web site and then making the necessary changes to web.config.

Fixed! I was using ELMAH 1.05527 instead of ELMAH 1.0 Beta 2. Now
everything is working except emailing via gmail smtp but thats a
different issue.

I can navigate to elmah.axd and see the in memory log but the i don't
get an error email nor is it saving the xml files. And I can't
navigate to elmah.axd/about

I'm going to keep tinkering with web.config. My web.config is below.

What version are you using? It normally appears in the footer of every page.
Also, are you have to navigate to elmah.axd/about to get more information on the version installed?

I just got ELMAH installed and when I navigate to elmah.axd everything
looks fine except that I don't have the menu underneath the title,
"Error Log for ..."

Well, to do this I decided to just modify the elmah code to have an
aid parameter in the querystring since all of our application names
are a number. Then for each app I make sure I set the applicationanme
to this number explicitly in the web.config. This way I can use the
already nicely built UI built into elmah.
