alright, i fixed my problem.  don't know if this will help anyone out
or not but i had a bad file upload for /entities/index.php and it was
being read as a directory.  overwriting /entities/index.php with the
actual file kept erroring because unix wouldn't write a file on top of
a directory.  after manually going down through each folder, i found
it and deleted the index.php directory and uploaded the correct
index.php file and voila, magick.
