Why "Majority Judgment" failed in France 2007.
I now understand what went wrong to cause Balinski & Laraki's 2007 MJ voting experiment to elect Sarkozy instead of the winner France wanted, Bayrou. That is now explained here: [link] But it seems rare that MJ and average-based range voting yield different winners in the real world. At present, France 2007 is the... more »

Range voting (also called "Score voting"), Majority Judgment, and "Burr dilemma" (also called "chicken dilemma"), and Bayesian Regret
Hello. This idea arose from a post by Jameson Quinn (JQ), now with many comments and a small amount of editing added by Warren D. Smith (WDS). The point is that the Balinski-Laraki "Majority Judgment" voting method (which is like highest-average-score-wins score voting, but instead using median score and a tie-breaking procedure; an alternate tie-breaking... more »

Isn't this the common-sense/intuitive... more »

Which numerical rating scales have pro pollsters used to rate politicians?
Searching a large international poll database by the ORS for range-style polls using various numerical scales for people providing overall-ratings for politicians [as opposed to other topics such as about "named politicians just on abortion" or "blacks" or "terrorism"] I found these score-ranges were used:... more »

The hazards of Gambling
At a time when we are still in deep economic trouble, with huge numbers of people unemployed, or under-employed, and with no serious effort to get corporations and the super-rich to pay more taxes, many states and municipalities are turning to gambling as a "painless" revenue source. We are seeing more state lotteries, licensing of... more »
