India has a lot of talent solving the problem of the rich, but social innovations need to serve the large number of poor, said Mr Sam Pitroda, Advisor to the Prime Minister , on public information infrastructure and innovations.
Mr Pitroda was addressing a meet of 100 young social innovators in IIT Delhi on Saturday, organised by the ‘Action For India' Forum 2012. He said to support social entrepreneurs set up new business models to bring about change, efforts were under way to increase the corpus of National Innovation Fund.
Among the innovators from across the country who attended the meet were Mr Chanchalapathi Dasa, Trustee of Akshaya Patra Foundation, which arranged mid-day meals for 1.3 million children everyday; Ms Prableen Sabhhaney from Fabindia, that has made over 15,000 mini-entrepreneurs out of weavers and artisans, self-help group Pradan's Mr Anish Pradhan, which covers nearly 200,000 rural poor women in eight States and has mobilised a total savings of Rs 50 crore.
Ms Sushmita Ghosh, President Emeritus, Ashoka, a community of nearly 3,000 social entrepreneurs; Mr K. Thiagarajan from Agastya, the science education programme in schools; and officials connected with the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana also discussed how technology could help social enterprises get wider coverage and impact.
The sectors were represented by eFarm and Logistimo in the field of agriculture, education by Butterfly Fields and Gram Vaani, healthcare by Biosense and iKure, energy by Simpa Networks and Onergy and livelihood by Amrita University and Jaldoot.
