Hello and what a great Monday!
In an enormously surprising and fantastic move last Friday, members of the
U.S. House of Representatives Education and Labor Committee strategized a
very creative way to advance the key elements of No Child Left Inside this
year. The NCLI coalition leaders are thrilled to share this news with you
and ask you to take action today or Tuesday. This movement in the House is a
significant step and indicates that there is tremendous momentum among our
elected officials to support environmental education.
Please read on and take action ASAP as the turn-around time is a very small
window!
Thank you all for your past work. The time and energy we have spent is
paying off in ways we never imagined!
We are on the cusp,… take action to make sure Congress knows how much we
need their continued support and how much we appreciate their prioritizing
environmental education.

House Committee to Take up NCLI Act Wednesday
Urgent action is needed TODAY!
We are excited to tell you that the House Education and Labor Committee is
scheduled to vote on a modified version of the No Child Left Inside Act this
Wednesday, June 18th.
After a careful review, the NCLI Coalition leadership team strongly supports
the amended version of the bill. Its key provisions, which are summarized in
an attachment, would expand the National Environmental Education Act to:
· Provide grants to ensure that teachers have the have the necessary
knowledge and skills to teach environmental education;
· Provide grants to enhance state and national capacity for
environmental education.
· States that create environmental literacy plans, detailing how all
graduates will be environmentally literate, will be eligible for this
funding.
Movement by the committee means that its leaders strongly support
environmental education. And we know that this support has grown because of
the great work of our lead House sponsor, Rep. John P. Sarbanes of Maryland,
and because members are hearing from constituents who care about getting
kids outside to learn.
Now, we have to redouble our grassroots effort – and do it today! – to make
sure the House passes a strong NCLI Act that can improve environmental
instruction across the country.
We have three requests:
1.. On behalf of your organization, send separate letters of support for
the NCLI Act to the Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Education and
Labor Committee. We are attaching two template letters that you can modify
and place on your organization’s letterhead – one to Chairman Miller and a
slightly different one to Representative McKeon, the ranking Republican. We
strongly urge you members to fax your letters by close of business on
Tuesday.
Chairman: Rep. George Miller (D-California) Fax: 202-225-5609
Ranking Member: Rep. Buck McKeon (R-California) Fax:
202-226-0683
2. Groups in areas represented by members of the House Education and
Labor Committee should work particularly hard to make sure those
representatives hear from their constituents and support the bill. If a
member of the committee is already a co-sponsor, we should thank them and
ask for their continued support during markup. [See below for list of
committee members, including co-sponsors.]
3. Attached is a sign-on letter that we will be sending to the
committee Tuesday afternoon. If you support having your organization’s name
on this letter, please let us know by 4 p.m. Tuesday.
We have come a long way and our message is clearly resonating with Congress.
But we must go the extra mile this week to make sure that message is heard
more clearly than ever in Washington.
Please let me know if you have questions or need help with letters to
Congress. For more information on the NCLI Act, visit www.nclicoalition.org.
