Hi, here's a Google Map everyone can add to:
http://tinyurl.com/eduMOOCmap

I posted my intro there.
Thought it might be a nice way to visualize where all the participants
are.

How do you post to the map?

To post to the map look for an Edit button in the upper right corner
of the left side panel. Click Edit, and then you'll see the Add a
placemark icon at the top of the map. Click it and then click on the
map where you want to add your placemark. Click Save / Done when
you're finished.

See http://maps.google.com/support/bin/static.py?page=guide.cs&guide=21670&topic=21676&answer=144363#placemark
for detailed instructions.

Great idea! I was just looking for a tool like this earlier this week.
This and the instructions others have provided has been helpful. The
"class" hasn't even started and I'm already learning things I can put
to use right now.

it was fascinating to post my info to the map and see where everyone
else is. when i noticed some varied icons and colors, i figured out
how to edit my pin info. since i bike to work, i chose a green biker
icon instead of the default blue marker. it was fun being able to
personalize my info that way.

cheers,

i too enjoy this map and have already connected with other educators
from this map!

I have done EDIT and put my pin in my workplace of Oslo, Norway - but
it seems not to update the map even after pressing SAVE.

Anyway, just to let you all know an eduMOOC2011 participant is from
Norway! :)

best regards

Paul, I had the same problem at first, until I realized that there were multiple "pages" in the list of names on the left side, and the pins on the map correspond to the "page" of names showing at that moment. Scroll down to the bottom of that list to find the link to advance to the next page(s) until you find your name in the list - and you should see your pin. Hope that helps.

This map is awe inspiring!
I think this may be the most people I've seen in a MOOC since I
started moocing ;-)

Oh, I thought perhaps you were "out at sea" playing Thomas Dolby's
intriguing new tribes/cooperative/trading game leading up to release
of his new album The Floating City... we're discovering the rules as
we go along & the interface seems to be adapting to players'
responses. And you get music, too... "she blinded me with science..."

Vanessa, you would be on the Greenland Ice Sheet. It is crucial that
we maintain the ice sheet for the good of the earth and sea levels. I
am glad to see someone is looking out for it!

Anyone in Africa? Only continent on the map without any "placemarks"
--yet (besides Antartica!).

I grew up in DRC, so I'd love to connect with folks from there or
other places...South Africa? Kenya? There's a lot of amazing ML4D
happening...love to learn more about it.

@Apostolos and @Paul thanks for the feedback...I just updated the map
description to emphasize the SAVE and DONE (the 'done' part does seem
kind of unnecessary)

Gandalf,
I thought that at first, then I figured out that there is a second
page to the Google map. If you click that, then you'll see me and some
other folk appear, too.
