Hi!

I am a Professor Emeritus of Communication, and founding director of the Center for Online Learning, Research, and Service at the University of Illinois Springfield. I have taught for the past 40 years at the Springfield or Urbana campus.   I have published the populaOnline Learning Update and Educational Technology blogs for the past decade. And the inaugural 2010 recipient of the Sloan Consortium's highest Individual award - the A. Frank Mayadas Leadership Award. Schroeder is an inaugural Sloan Consortium Fellow.

I live in a tiny town on the prairie outside of Springfield, IL.  My hobbies include photography http://www.flickr.com/photos/rayschroeder/ and tending to my recently acquired few acres in the country (harder work than I imagined!).

I have the grand fortune to work with the best professionals anywhere at the Center for Online Learning, Research and ServiceUniversity of Illinois Springfield. They patiently tolerated me when I said - "let's make a MOOC!" a few weeks ago.  To them I am always indebted for all they do for UIS, online, and to make me look good.

Thank you!

Hi Ray (and others),

I am an instructional designer at Ryerson University's Chang School of
Continuing Education in Toronto, Canada. I am also an MDE student at
Athabasca University (online) working at thesis stage. In my daily
work I manage approximately ten courses per term working
collaboratively with subject matter experts (our instructors) to
develop fully online, instructor-led asynchronous courses. I look
forward to participating in this course and learning about others.
There's a lot going on in online learning!

Cheers,
Jenni

Hi Yall!
I'm just beginning work on my Masters in Instructional Technology and Design at Walden. My ultimate goal is to design and teach an online American History course that is heavily based on folk music. It will include LOTS of songwriting and collaboration w/ real songwriters. this course will be for high school, college and homeschool kids. Many of my friends from the Kerrville Folk Festival are very much interested in participating :)

Hi Ray and everyone else that reads this,
Thanks for setting up this MOOC.  I look forward to learning with everyone and expanding my professional network.  I thought this would be a cool learning exercise to explore. As you can see from my Google Profile my name is Terence Armentano (twitter name: terenceonline, Linked In ). I am the Assistant Director at the Center for Online and Blended Learning at Bowling Green State University (BGSU). I am thankful to work with such amazing colleagues at BGSU. We really enjoy what we do. I provide leadership in the coordination and oversight of the design, development and implementation of new online programs at BGSU. I also manage faculty training in online technologies and pedagogies, provide leadership in the research of new technologies related to distance education, and serve as a lead instructional designer in online course and program development.  I developed and implemented the Blog, Podcast, and Showcase Portfolio System at BGSU (http://blogs.bgsu.edu) which is has been very successful as faculty, staff, and student from all over the University use the system in a variety of creative ways.

I love being a husband and dad of 4 children (1 girl and 3 boys) with 1 on the way. We're so excited :-)  My wife and I are also foster parents and really appreciate the opportunity to care for kids in need. It's a wild adventure and something I would being willing to talk to anyone about as it's very dear to my heart. I like dates with my wife, playing with the kids, riding my motorcycle, playing guitar, deep conversations, fishing, reading, and playing with new gadgets. I recently re-designed our church website which I think looks pretty neat too. OK, that's enough about me. I look forward to learning with you all!

Thanks
Terence

Hello everyone!

I work for the University of Colorado Denver as an Academic Technology Coordinator. In the past I worked as an Instructional Designer at Rhodes State College and taught online and blended courses at Bowling Green State University in Visual Communications Technology and Africana Studies.

Here at UCD I have the privilege to work for CU Online where we get to host fantastic events like Winter Web Camp and an annual Spring Symposium. We also host an inter-institutional Faculty Learning Community which meets virtually on Fridays in Adobe Connect to discuss

In my spare time I write and record music, as well as perform it live in my band Genetic Engines. You can listen and/or download the album I spent 2010 working on for "free" (name your own price) at my BandCamp page: http://michaeledwards.bandcamp.com.

I'm excited to be involved in this MOOC and to meet everyone else!

Hi Everyone,

My name is Apostolos but most (non-Greeks :-) ) call me AK.
I am an Instructional Designer at the University of Massachusetts
Boston focusing mostly on Web 2.0 (aka collaborative) technologies,
but I still have a hand in more traditional LMS management when it's
required. I have a varied academic background having completed but
most recently I finished an MEd in instructional design and an MA in
Applied Linguistics.

My free time is spent playing video games, or going out for walks
(love the summer, heat n' all!) but I am still "academic" having not
wound down after graduation. I am always looking for opportunities to
collaborate in research and publishing. Here is a link to a google doc
with ideas and a signup idea sheet for collaborative research if
anyone is interested:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1_a_wFE-utlRWHimZcNYzl1CyJqF3n5FYGtv0J_7AsOQ/edit?authkey=CJOp3ZYJ&hl=en_US&pli=1
I've got my hands full for now with a couple of articles in prep (one
of them on the idea sheet above), but after those are done I am
interested in working on other projects as well :-)

Beyond that, I love travel, but costs are prohibitive, so for
vacations I sit on my balcony and read a good book or listen to
music ;-)

You can find more about me (and connect!) on LinkedIn

Looking forward to eduMOOC!

I work in the newly formed (spawned) Center for Innovative Teaching
and Learning at Indiana University, Bloomington. I'm an Instructional
Technology Specialist, which means I don't specialize in anything.
I've been very involved in getting online learning up and running at
a
large residential R1 university. It's a journey.
My academic interests wander around from the learning sciences to
gaming to collaborative technologies to mobile devices (had to drag
me
kicking and screaming into this one, but I can't ignore it anymore).
I
think one of the things that concerns me greatly is the fact that the
things we are learning about learning are not penetrating the day-to-
day practices of nearly enough university faculty members. The
greatest thing about corralling a bunch of faculty members and
getting
them to redesign a course to take it online is that they learn so
much
about teaching in general. They often say, "I'm going to use some of
these techniques in my f2f teaching, too." I am interested in finding
out how other people are tackling the challenges of online learning
and educating faculty.
When I'm not trying to change the face of education, I'm running or
swimming or gardening or playing tennis with one of my 3 sons or
hiking or kayaking or playing music (we've got a band, too). I really
hope I keep up with this. A quick look at some of the resources
posted
for the course has already been tremendously helpful.
Thanks,

I like mystery novels, thunderstorms, and long walks in the woods.

State University, Bowling Green, Ohio. My areas of specialization are
adaptive hypermedia and immersive learning design; multimedia,
instructional, and courseware design; digital game-based learning;

On a personal note... I live outside of Bowling Green nestled between
two interesting little towns, Grand Rapids and Tontogany. My husband
and I have two sons and two wonderful daughters-in-law -- and the
light of our lives are our four grandchildren. We visit Fort Myers, FL
and Dublin, OH as often as possible to hang out with them! We also
have one very precocious cat, Dutch (inherited from our sons). We're
pretty sure he doesn't know he's a cat -- he acts more like a two year

I'm a huge fan of science fiction/fantasy books and movies. If I'm not

Toledo Zoo is awesome!), walking in one of our many parks, or baking.

I look forward to learning with you all!

My name is Lisa Kidder and I'm a Senior Instructional Technologist at
Idaho State University. I absolutely love teaching and learning and
technology. Thus my position in working with faculty on how to
integrate technology.

I have taught in K-12, adult education and in higher ed. I am a self-
taught techie, but mostly I consider myself a translator. I translate
tech into teach and teach into tech ;-) I have degrees in French,
Chemistry, Educational Technology and I am working on a PhD in
Instructional Design.

I'm excited to try another MOOC. I almost made it through PLENK10 and
learned a lot doing so.

This is Kathryn Propst from the Innovative Center for Teaching and

out the MOOC format. I haven't used Google Groups in a while and I can
figure out how to post a message in this discussion so I'm replying to
a message to see if that works.

Not sure if I was supposed to start a new discussion (which seem to be
the topics) or a reply....

Hi, y'all -

I'm a retired academic/corporate/school librarian, have taught online
as Adjunct Professor for the University of North Texas College of
Information in Library Science. When I got my Masters of Library
Science at UNT in '79, we had very small blocks of time available on
the UNT mainframe computer to experiment with cataloging protocols -
how very far we've come!

As part of the GiggleIT Project (free online middle-grades student
writing project) of the International Association of School
Librarianship, I'm interested in how "distance delivery" of education
and learning (not the same thing) works for younger students as well
as for professional development.

I'm also an independent book reviewer for www.abookandahug.com (the
best books for babies, kids, tweens, and teens) and recommend Young
Adult books beyond the bestsellers on my blog http://BooksYALove.blogspot.com.

Looking forward to the MOOC as we bring so many different viewpoints
from around the world,

Hello,
Nice to meet everyone! I'm an instructional designer/student success coordinator for an online learning department at a community college in Colorado. My interests are online learning, collaboration, immersion, role-play, virtual environments and games. I absolutely want to be involved in a collaboration concerning online learning as it is today and what innovation is possible for the future.

Also, social network knowledge creation (which I consider this course) interests me because I see so much learning that is happening outside of formal learning environments. I believe that ignoring learning from distributed social and professional networks limits our students and our instructors' futures.

(Oh, did I mention, I have a tendency to be a bit intense about education!)

I collaborate with an exceptional group of online educators (exceptional because of them - not me) at Center4EduPunx www.center4edupunx.com and VWBPE www.vwbpe.org. I'm also involved with the Virtual Worlds Graduate UnSymposium www.vw.unsymposium.org October 21-23, 2011.

Hey there.

There sure is a lot of people signing up already. Wow. My old pal Ray
is one connected guy.

This is Curt Bonk here in lovely Bloomington, Indiana; home of Indiana
University. I will be one of the so-called experts in the last week of
the eduMOOC that Ray has wonderfully put together. I think that is
because Ray is hoping that I become an expert at something useful
between now and then. Waiting until the end Ray...humm...he should
realize over there in the flatlands of Illinois, that the corn may
grow so tall by then that I may not get a decent Internet connection.
He should also realize that I am flying on Delta earlier in the week
and who knows where they will take me or if I will return at all
(those wanting to understand that joke, need only read my most recent
blog post at TravelinEdMan on my most recent 12 trips/flights:
http://travelinedman.blogspot.com/).

For those in need of a heavy bout of boredom or escape from their
significant other or their kids, more info on me is at my homepage
(http://mypage.iu.edu/~cjbonk/). From there, you can find a link to 27
short 9-10 minutes videos I created last year related to teaching
online that my dean's office has made free to the world to do with
them as you like. There is also a link to my "World is Open with Web
Technology" syllabus...a 52 page monster wherein everything is a
hotlink. Stay sane: don't touch that link!

Yes, Ray is the connected one. We should annoint him as such. And
perhaps we should we rename the ol' Alice Cooper song, "Elected," to
"Connected" in honor of Ray. Whatcha say Ray?

"Connected" hypothetically sung by Ray Schroeder

I'm your top prime cut of meat, I'm your Google search choice
I wanna be connected
I'm your yankee doodle dandy in a gold Rolls Royce
I wanna be connected
Kids want a savior, don't need a fake
I wanna be connected
We're gonna rock to the rules that I make
I wanna be connected, connected, connected
I never lied to you, I've always been cool
I wanna be connected
I gotta get the vote, and I told you about school
I wanna be connected, connected, connected
Hallelujah, I wanna be connected
Everyone in the United States of Facebook
We're gonna win this one, take the world by storm
We're gonna be connected
You and me together, young and strong
We're gonna be connected, connected, connected
Respected, selected, call collected
I wanna be connected, connected

Curriculum Specialist, then was deemed Virtual Learning Specialist,
then since both of those seemed too limited to describe what I
actually do, here I am. In this role I am helping craft into being a
wide range of online learning options for our ~78,000 students and
~7,000 teachers here in Nashville, Tennessee. I also am a Core
Volunteer (their designation) for the International Society for
Technology in Education, ISTE, and in that role I chair the Special
Interest Group for Virtual Environments and co-facilitate the
organization's conference Virtual Environments Playground, this year
coming up next week in Philadelphia, PA. I've posted my schedule for
that event (a moving target, at best) at my blog at http://scottmerrick.net,
so if you're going to be there please feel free to track me down for a
free hug.

I'm happy to be here and though my initial participation may be light
due to ISTE11, I will hopefully learn and be of some use to the
group.

I should add that I am the lucky husband of a beautiful independent
school arts coordinator and the proud father of two beautiful and
talented kids, one a senior at Belmont University and one a sophomore
at Nashville School of the Arts (HS).

There's a bit more if you google me :)

Hi all,

I'm John Sener, currently vacationing on the Outer Banks in Corolla,
NC; reside in the MD suburbs within sight of DC. As Founder/CKO of
Sener Knowledge LLC and Director of Special Initiatives for Sloan-C,
I've been one of the "accidental pioneers" in online learning (17+
years) and continue to be amazed at how my passion for the field has
persisted -- although yes, I will be going to the beach shortly after
finishing this.

For the past 18+ months, I've been writing a book about the seven
futures of American education, which describes how we got to our
current situation, what will happen next, and how to use the
cyberization of education to improve it. My typical response to
openness is to test limits, so I'll be shamelessly throwing in a bunch
of book-related resources into this mix and seeing if anyone finds
them useful, and maybe also trying to go off in random directions just
to see what happens. Always great to see a mix of familiar folks and
new ones.

Thanks to Ray and his co-conspirators for putting this together - I'm
curious to see how the mix of openness and structure will work and
what will emerge from this gathering.

All good. Looking forward to having time to jump into this one this summer. I have some trials to run on using mobile devices for participating, and some thinking to do about RSS aggregators.

As a result of PLENK2010, I introduced MOOC and PLE methods into our junior-level Weblogs and Wikis course last spring, and am bringing them into a sophomore-level Argument & Exposition course this fall.

I'm anti-LMS (D2L, Blackboard) and have made it my personal crusade to undermine the walled gardens at every turn.

Interesting to see BGSU people in attendance. I did a Rhet/Comp PhD there back in the day.

Hi - My name is Mitch and I'm an Assistant Professor at an online
university...I have been in the academic field now since I attended
law school at the U of IL campus - where I taught Business & Technical
Writing for 3 years to put myself through law school. I litigated for

Manager, to Manager of new faculty training, to Director of Faculty
Management, to Associate Dean of the College of Business & Management,
to my newest and best role of full-time faculty. I teach law, human
resources, and ethics to undergraduate and graduate students - with a
typical course load of 90 students/ 8-week session (3 courses, 5
sessions/year.) I also write online courses.

My educational background is that I have a BA ('88) and JD ('91) from
University of IL - Champaign/Urbana; a Master's in Technical
Communication from Texas Tech University ('08), and a Master's
Certificate in Human Resource Management from Villanova University
('11). I attended TTU and Villanova both entirely online. My BA and JD
were traditional "F2F". I also earned the SPHR status from the Human
Resource Certification Institute this past year.

It's great to be here - I look forward to learning and seeing how this

the opportunity to provide support, guidance and inspiration to
faculty and I am grateful to move into higher education. Previously, I
worked in K12 as a middle school English teacher and Integration Tech

In my spare time, I try to take advantage of everything Colorado has
to offer. In the summer, I rock climb, bike and hike. In the winter, I
ski and ice climb. My husband is my partner in crime, so our garage is
filled with bikes and packs and parts and gear. If the season doesn't
bring epic snow or dry summer days, we pack up our bags and head to
somewhere where the conditions prove more favorable. You'll never see
us on the typical tourist track as we prefer the less beaten or more
likely the untracked path.

I look forward to learning with all of you.

distance learning for about seven months. I'm excited about distance
learning/e-learning/m-learning because it is so empowering. I'm here
at this MOOC to soak up information to inform my own job as well as to
share with my colleagues.

Hi everyone-

I'm a Master's student in Higher Education Administration at
Vanderbilt University's Peabody College. I'm a former project manager
in the tech world in Silicon Valley and I'm interested in how online
learning is shaping the structures of higher education, specifically
campus communities and networks. I've also been interested in looking
at the impact that online learning has had in rural areas,
specifically Appalachia, and how decreasing the digital divide can
continue to improve access to education.

Looking forward to this experience!

Greetings,

I am a PhD candidate at Arizona State University (ASU) in Educational
technology and working on my dissertation. I teach technology
integration to pre-service teachers enrolled in the MLF Teacher's
College at ASU. I also work on several projects as an instructional
design expert consultant and evaluator. My research interests have
been mostly focused in online learning. I am currently looking at
using rubrics to support students' critical thinking skill
demonstration in asynchronous discussion boards through a 2x2 quasi-
experimental research design.

I love to hike the wilderness, cook, try new foods, and experience the
fine arts. I look forward to exploring the future of online learning
with you.

Thanks,

Curt (and all)-

HI! Sorry it has taken so long to respond... I have been trying to
keep up with the registrations! As of this minute we have 1,113
registered. I am trying to find a larger online web conferencing room
for our synchronous sessions so that more of us can meet for the panel
discussions.

I like the title "Connected!" And, your rendition of Alice Cooper's
"Elected" is grand! Just wonderful! The only problem is that you
have not heard me sing (as no one will). So, I'll leave the singing
to you or others so talented.

In just these few seconds we have increased to 1,116. So I have to
get back to tending the "registration" table so-to-speak.

Thanks to you and all the panelists for participating.

I encourage us all to carefully read the http://sites.google.com/site/edumooc/
page and begin to dig into some of the hundreds of resources that are
linked for the weeks (the richest source of links is Curt Bonk's
Syllabus in the final week).

Hi, all,

A thousand self-introductions is a scary beast, but I'm game...

I am Alex Halavais, I teach in an all-online and a hybrid graduate
program in interactive communication at Quinnipiac University. I've
been teaching hybrid courses for more than a decade, mostly in the
open, and enjoy experimenting with new approaches. The largest of my
online courses had over two hundred people keeping personal blogs, and
that experience made me realize that once you hit a fairly low
threshold, you have to design for scalability and open interaction.

I'm more recently interested in alternative forms of assessment, both
in traditional and less traditional learning environments.

Looking forward to learning more with all of you.

I would speak, but I am sitting here in awe...

I appreciate the opportunity to learn from these discussions, even
though I am only a graduate student. I had no idea that online classes
existed when I returned to my local community college with the
intention of finishing a degree I had pushed aside 20 years earlier.
Four years and four degrees later and I cannot contain my enthusiasm
for learning or for helping others along their journey.

This is why I now find myself - a middle-aged mom and full-time
business administrator - in a graduate program studying distance
education and adult education. I want to make a difference and I am
trying to be patient while I puzzle out the details of how.

My research interests center around building online learning
communities and, more specifically, their potential to become support
resources for increasing learner engagement. I am excited to see
people discussing Community of Inquiry as I have studied that model as
well as Communities of Practice with fervor. As an undergraduate
majoring in psychology, I was a founding member and president of the
first online student organization at Penn State.

Again, thank you for this learning opportunity. I can't wait to get
started!

Howdy everyone.
I work at Suffolk University in downtown Boston as the Academic
Learning Technologist. At this point I am working specifically with
our Business School faculty to help them integrate technology. This
ranges from answering questions about why they can't copy a course in
Blackboard (9.1) to what kind of social media to choose for a town-
gown collaborative site, to designing the online teaching and learning
guidelines and courses for our faculty. I registered for the first
George Siemens and Stephen Downes Massive Open On-line Course (MOOC)
called, Connectivism and Connected Knowledge. I got so overwhelmed I
didn't finish it, but it was a heck of an experience.

I live in a great part of Boston that is commutable to work via public
transportation, has lots of green space, and has a variety of diverse
neighborhoods. I hope to bike to work this summer, get out to do some
kayaking, of course walk my labradoodle, Gilmore, and join some
drumming circles.

My name is Jenny Ankenbauer and I live in Ankara Turkey. I am an
adult
educator and teach ELL classes for a Turkish NGO. I have several
years
experience as a certified teacher in US public schools and a few more
as
a community college instructor. From reading the intros I seem to be
in the
minority as an educator whose primary job is not IT or ID. So I'll
be approaching the discussions from a different angle than most of
our
community members, and responding off kilter as well.
My primary goal is to learn innovative ways to maximize student
interactivity with content thus reducing dependency on text-based
knowledge
delivery. Be it F2F, hybrid or online, collaborative learning planned
around
a high degree of interactivity and student ownership, followed up with
a
healthy dose of genuine mentored feedback, is central to
transformative
learning. I am interested in learning how other instructors have met
this
challenge. It will also be great to exchange views on two other less
concrete, but equally essential elements of learning; self-regulated
learning and teacher epistemology.
I am happy to be amongst so many online instructional experts. I look
forward to the next few weeks of doing my part to stir the stew. It
promises to be a real banquet!

Social collaboration is the key to developing successful eLearning.

Hi,
I am Pamela Salela, librarian & faculty member at the University of
Illinois at Springfield. From a historical standpoint, it's been
interesting to watch the evolution of online learning since my time as
a graduate student in the Graduate School of Library and Information
Science at UIUC (1997-1999). I was a teaching assistant for an online
course in 1997, long before tools like Blackboard, WebCT, etc. ever
existed.
Though I have taught a course online many times in the past several
years at UIS, I still have MUCH to learn!

marketing/communications for the past few years, I’m working toward a
transition back to training/teaching—I've started to really miss that
type of work and learner engagement, and want to make a career
change.
Earlier in my career, I developed and conducted training for a
variety
of learners.
I follow Ray Schroeder regularly, and if he’s involved in something,
it’s sure to be interesting as well as a great learning opportunity!
I’m really looking forward to seeing how all this works, how we learn
together, and from one another, with this type of approach.
Cheers,
Janet

Hello Everyone,
My name is Barb Perlewitz and I and the director of the Graduate
Teacher Certification program (Secondary Education) and the
Curriculum
and Instruction Master's program at Concordia University NE. I have
been teaching online for nearly five years, but I'm always looking
for
ways to improve my own instruction and provide support and guidance
for my adjuncts. I'm usually the first to try new and innovative
things and share my experiences (successes and failures) with my
colleagues.
I am new to MOOCs, and think this will be a great learning/growing
experience once I get it all figured out. I am looking forward to
getting to know many of you, and as the intro video said to get
networks started (or added to). My areas of interest are, but not
limited to, instructional design, and online teaching tools.

Hello All:
I'm Phil Auter, an associate professor of communication at the
University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Although my wife (who also
teaches communication in our department are teaching a total of six
classes this summer, we are spending the summer with our family at
the
beach in Florida. All six of our classes are 100% online using
primarily Moodle, but also other tools such as Elluminate. I hope
that my freshmen level intro to mass comm class will become one of
the
first at ULL to pass Quality Matters standards.
I've been teaching online and hybrid for 5-7 years now and including
class websites for over 10 years. I look forward to the discussions
and the learning experiences from this MOOC and hope they will make
us
all better online and traditional educators.
Phil Auter
