Hi,
This is George "Willy" Williams (haven't been called that since high
school) I'm an online instructor at Chicago State University and Chair
of the Distance Education Committee. We are in the process of setting
up programs on both of these topics, and I would like to see what you
do at your schools.
Currently we are using Moodle which I prefer over Blackboard -
especially the "Book" module.
For online instructor evaluations each department is supposed to have
its own evaluation tool (a little loosey-goosey). I'd like to see CSU
develop a campus wide online evaluation tool.
Also, we have have some bad experiences with new online and hybrid
courses; se feel the need to provide a certification program for new
and 'old' online instructors.
What does anyone think?
Any suggestions?
Willy

George, I'm the Program Advisor for the E-Learning and Online
Teaching Graduate Certificate Program at the University of Wisconsin
Stout. For the last six years we've been building our e-learning
program. I feel it is absolutely essential for faculty to have deep
training in the art of teaching online. This is an ongoing need for
veteran and new online teachers. The technology changes so rapidly
learning never stops.

We work with both D2L and Moodle (my personal favorite). Both
programs present a constant learning curve. However the technology is
second to the techniques needed to promote online collaboration,
meaningful discussion, and media enhanced thinking.

E-Learning is a very public way to teach. Everything you do is on the
record and in the database. If you fail to deliver the word of mouth
from students can shut down a program. For that reason, we need to
think of students as not just learners pursuing a goal, but valued
customers who should be treated with consideration and respect.

I've got some resources that will help you with best practices and
evaluation work.

Best of luck with your program.

Dennis,
Thank you for the response. I'll check out your link.
CSU is a little unusual. An instructor is paid $1,500 in override
money the first time he/she prepares and teaches an online course.
Then each semester the course is taught, the instructor receives an
additonal $500.00 for course maintenance. However, no money is paid
for hybrid courses, and we seem to be having a few problems also with
those.
Also in the union contract there is an entire article outlining the
obligations of administration, IT dept, Office of Distance Learning
and individual departments for online eduction. I am on the union
negotiating team; right now we are in negotiations and I have been
able to beef up the Distance Learning article.
I have found that teaching online has made me a better instructor, and
my students agree by giving me excellent evaluations even though my
courses contain more than an average workload. Being an effective
online instructor has become a personal challenge.
Thanks again,
George

Hi Willy. I'm not too far from you at NEIU. I've developed a
certificate program for our faculty to teach them HOW to teach online.
I combine learning about the LMS (how to do things), online pedagogy,
and a little bit of instructional design. It's 4 weeks long and I
would be happy to share more details with you. Feel free to contact
me: a-ve...@neiu.edu.

Hi Angela -- I would be interested as well -- I am working on a
similar course for instructors at the Simmons Graduate School of
Library and Information Science continuing ed program.

Thanks,
Kris

Hi Angela,
Thanks for the response.
I hear you finally got a contract. We're in the middle of negotiations
right now - we have a negotiations session in about an hour and I'm on
the fauclty team.
I would be interested in seeing what we have. One of our technology
specialists has just completed a certification program and I'm going
to test it this weekend. I'd be happy to share this with you also. I'm
looking forward to cmpare what we have come up with with what you
have. How long has yours been in place?

Kris, just contact me by email and we can talk. Willy, mine started in
October of 2009. It's been very successful... especially given our
highly charged political climate. Dr. Gandalf... it's online, yes. We
don't meet face to face. It's not available for outside participation,
though.

Hello George (Willy),

Penn State has some resources here http://weblearning.psu.edu/resources
that you might find helpful. The "Faculty Self Assessment for Online
Teaching" is a tool that I helped to create. The "Peer Review of
Online Teaching" and "Penn State Quality Assurance Standards" are also
good resources. The "World Campus Faculty Development Site" at
http://psuwcfacdev.ning.com/ is the gateway to a lot of Larry Ragan's
resources. I believe he'll be part of this eduMOOC in one of the later
weeks.

I've recently completed my doctorate using an action research project
with faculty preparing to teach online, so continue to be VERY
interested in this topic.

Best,

Carol

Carol,

I really like the Faculty Self Assessment tool. Do you know if any
research has been done that correlates how people self-ranked
themselves as compared to their actual performance when teaching
online? Similarly, what has been your experience with the online
learning curve for faculty who are "new" to the online environment?
Based on my own experience, I have found that it takes ~6 months
before most faculty that I know have become "comfortable" with
teaching online. Then again, a lot of this has to do with personal
comfort-levels with the content, the mix of students, etc (really, no
different than someone teaching a "new" class for the first time).

What do you think?

Thanks for this information. It appears comprehensive for someone
interested in teaching online. Gracie
