Hello fellow edMOOCs,

My name is Nellie Deutsch and I am passionate about collaborative learning. I created a collaborative blog on wikiEducator because I'm addicted to wikimedia and a Moodle course (social format) because a colleague on facebook mentioned that she preferred the Moodle for the discussions. I guess we all have our preference for our professional/personal learning environments. What PLE do you prefer?

Thank you.
Nellie

Hi Nellie,

Not sure if it's just me but I sense a lot of worry over what this MOOC is supposed to "teach." Maybe after a few of these people lose their assessment anxiety and relax into the journey or maybe it's just this one? Would people take this course if it wasn't packed with pre-arranged content and smelled of stuffy lecture halls?

Took the CCK11 MOOC for credit (!) and still had fun. Why does this one feel different?

Hi Scott and Others,

Unlike some, who as you say may need to learn in a formal environment, I expect to learn rather than be taught anything. I do require guidance or battery of topics and a direction. I am not sure I haved that right now, but I'm patient.

Warm wishes,

Well then, let's see what we can make of this one. I'm interested in PLEs (and Ns, KMSs, etc) even if I may not always be sure from one encounter to the next exactly what they are. I like building and furnishing my own personal learning environment,  seeking out and cultivating a network - and then sharing the "goodies" with network colleagues and learners.

I couldn't day but would hazard the guess that there might  be a higher % of institutional educators, administrators, professional development and corporate types - fewer natural born edupunks. Just not used to the looseness...

Hi Vanessa,

Are you referring to yourself when you say:  "Just not used to the looseness..." ?

Hi Nellie ~ I'm a long term webhead lurker and have been doing the EVO multiliteracies (which Vance referred to last time as a Mini Open Online Course ~ great way to get one's feet wet too. I worked on my first PLEs for one of them - two actually although I did not realize at the time. I made one on NetVibes for Multiliteracies. The other turned out to be my iGoogle page, which I thought as just a place to keep apps, notes, reader, mail, and other stuff I used a lot handy in one place. Meatball PLE.

Anyway I'm coming to think of MOOCs as humongous PLNs and sources for furnishing and remodeling the PLE(s), if that does not sound too facetious ... or like Causaubon's Keys.

I've done some but not much with wikis, more of a blogger and from there networked into other platforms. The idea of a social Moodle intrigues me.

depends on whether or not you mean my being loose or not used to looseness ;)

I'm AOK with trying to navigate chaos (not by definition manageable)

I just posted my thoughts on this in another thread on (lack of)
specific learning objectives: http://groups.google.com/group/edumooc/browse_frm/thread/4598a7826903fd82#

Scott, why do you think this feels like "stuffy lecture halls"? How
does it differ from CCK11?

Thanks Nellie - I've been thinking about doing just that and went over just now to join. I'm familiar with various platforms (even if don't remember their names) and most recently "made the acquaintance" of Moodle at Plenk 2010.

(later)

WOW ... gobsmacked. So cool to see Ruth Vilmi's IWE there too and others to add to my community learning resources list. Make this item #1 on "what I got out of this mooc." They tend to be connections, treasured feeds, cyber-destinations ~ should add that to objectives.

Gia,
CKK11 began with a challenge to the whole system of "truthing" ideas
through Connectivism's refusal to account for itself through
standardized tests applied to ideas that dare declare themselves
"theory". Also, this MOOC seems more domesticated and full of worries
over how we will make this thing into an educational object tradeable
for credits. That said, I dion't reject purpose and I AM looking for
something here that I can't entirely define. Maybe I sense knowing
attitudes warming up way before things to know have shown
themselves.

Agree! Scott. It´s different. QM seems to be only for experts. Among
other threads.Feel out of place.

Hello Nellie,
I'm not sure if I understand your question correctly. I wouldn't call
Moodle or wikieducator a PLE. For me, a PLE is highly individual, it's
a collection of tools I choose to manage my learning. Moodle can be an
important part of my PLE and it's great for discussions, but it's not
very "personal".
