Hi all,

As week 3 begins, I realized I didn’t do so well in meeting my week 2
objectives. Life got in the way – oh well.

For week three, I’m wondering what technologies, other than LMS, are
being used to enhance distance education today? Has there been any
breakthrough technologies since YouTube?

I shall ponder this and see if there are any worthwhile technologies
for including in online courses that I teach.

Is there anything you think I should look at?

Comments/suggestions welcome here or at
http://rjh.goingeast.ca/2011/07/11/week-3-learning-objectives-online-learning-technology-edumooc/.

I'll summarize at the end of the week (and might try to demo a couple
of tools on my blog).

Cheers,
Rebecca

HI all,

I thought I'd also ask for specific recommendations for application
screencast software. I teach a course on Advanced Microsoft Word, and
it would be useful if I could easily "show" my students how to perform
an action. There are a bunch of tools out there ... I'm just wondering
what people actually find useful? (and ideally, not too expensive).

Any recommendations?

Thanks
Rebecca

There are may free screencast options available - I prefer Screenr but there are many others available as well!

I use screenr, camtasia, an jing for recordings.

I also really like to use Articualte Studio in our online courses. This allows us to integrate web sites, interactive activities, videos, etc all into one module. The downside is that Aericulate does not have a Mac version nor does it play on iPads (since the final published files are flash).

Our school recently subscribed to some video providers like Films OnDemand (http://digital.films.com/AboutUs.aspx) and Swank.com. These sites enable our online instructors to share videos legally in their courses.

I will try to think of some more to share later.

Hi All,

We are in the process of rolling out an Echo360 system. While
fantastic for capturing lectures, the big potential is for using the
Personal Capture component - which allows desktop capture. You can
dual capture - so record the computers screen and attached webcam -
along with your audio. The other big plus of the system is the ability
to ingest external media - so pre-recorded existing materials or those
captured and edited elsewhere can be added. The next version of the
system also brings the first streaming component for iOS - so mobile
is set.

Personally I've used camtasia, captivate and using the recording
functions inbuilt in Quicktime (for all Mac users!).

While these are great for content production, I'm curious about the
technologies people are deploying for interaction and collaboration -
and what is actually effective from a students perspective. I'm very
wary of the idea of the 'click to go to next slide' being labelled as
interactive.... so what is really and truly interactive?

Hello all,
At Suffolk University we are using the screen capture tool Panopto
Focus (It used to be called Coursecast). One can capture a combination
of audio, video, and computer screen and quickly save it and publish
in a variety of formats including MP3, MP4, and streaming media. We've
been pretty pleased with it's functionality.http://www.panopto.com/

Hi Rebecca,

Last year, with another teacher, we explored a distance course
exploring web 2.0 tools. The students were 10 - 12yrs old and studied
marketplaces, they chose a focus, explored a couple of questions and
presented their explorations using different tools such as wordle,
animoto, and any other tools they wanted to play with. It was great
fun and rather than just being a presentation (in terms of teacher
delivery) it was interactive and the students were able to explore on
their and achieve higher level learning through seeing their work and
having a certain amount of ownership over their delivery.

This was done distance using moodle as a platform - and skype for real
time interactions.

Rebecca,

That sounds so cool. I'll add to my list to look into wordle and
animoto. Do you recall any others?

I've also got on my list to look further into showme (an iPad app). I
did a quick capture on it, and it is really cool - really easy to use.
I'll probably use it for some quick tutorials that don't require more
than a static screen shot and "whiteboard" markup.

Cheers,
Rebecca

Thanks Elena,

Panopto looks interesting. Do you know if it works on the PC (all the
images show Macs - which is great - I'm a Mac person, but I teach
Microsoft Word for Windows, so I need a product that works in
Windows). I also find it a little frustrating when sites don't make it
easy to figure out how much it costs. It isn't worth my time to
investigate a tool that I can't afford.

Cheers,
Rebecca

yes, it is definitely platform independent.

Hi everyone,

I tried out Wordle with my #edumooc blog posts (actually surprised
that edumooc wasn't a more popular word). Anyways, you can see the
results at: http://rjh.goingeast.ca/2011/07/15/learning-technology-tools-wordle-edumooc/

Hey, Rebecca,

To this point, I'm using the typical, such as videos (including those
from TED or topic specific Websites), uploads (e.g. PDFs), banners
(for Angel, flamingtext.com), audio, Powerpoint with audio, and so
on.

What I would really like to find is an inexpensive (or free) screen
capture app or some software that will allow me to annotate first week
online orientations. I see there are a few out there, so any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I also appreciate your request concerning screencasting. Some great
suggestions on this thread :-)

Many thanks and take care,

Susan

My favorite free screen recorder is Screenr by Articulate. Jing by Techsmith is also a good free option.

Thanks Melissa. I'm going to give Jing a try later today or tomorrow.
It might do exactly what I need.

Hi everyone,

I tried out another quick and easy tool - Show Me Interactive
Whiteboard. It is an iPad application, which means that you need an
iPad to make one, but it also means that it works on the iPad (not
true with many flash based tools).

Check out my post and my Show Me with a definition of mobile learning
