This post results from a contribution thread on a railroad related
discussion group. One contributor noted three strong factors, including
the rejection by Governor Scott of Florida of United States Federal
Government funding for high speed rail transportation, as causes for
defeat of light rail transportation in the Tampa, Floriday region.
Another poster shared an analogy to baseball that indicated that three
strikes and you are out does not end the series as the future brings a new
game to play and a new set of at bats. Tampa needs alternative
transportation to solve massive congestion on its roads and major
highways.

The baseball analogy apparently blew by some list members as an apology
and analogies to other sports like tennis whose games do not have the
clock limit of basketball, football and soccer. One plays in baseball and
tennis until the game is over.

I have no problem with your using a baseball analogy to help with the
understanding of railroad development. Indeed after one o'clock in the
morning in Philadelphia we get a marvelous example in a game that lasted
over six hours of this principle when a shortstop, Valdez, in the 19th
inning moved over to pitch and won the game, first time a position player
already in the game won a game since 1921 when Babe Ruth did this. It is
my considered opinion that baseball is a vital part of American culture
and cultural history. Indeed, examination of a baseball dictionary shows
how many baseball words and phrases have entered our language in other
fields such as three strikes and you are out in the field of law. Using
baseball analogies can help one score a touchdown in the understanding of
others regarding what you are saying, oops, I meant to say, hit a grand
slam home run. Has anyone ever seen the phrase grand slam used in
advertising?

Valdez in the Nineteenth Inning
In a game started on May 25, 2011 (but did not conclude until May 26th)
Valdez switched from second base to pitcher in the 19th inning, pitching
one inning and allowing no runs. This was the first time he had ever
pitched in a professional game. When the Phillies won in the bottom of the
19th inning, he was credited with the win. Valdez thus became the first
position player to earn a win since catcher Brent Mayne won a game for the
Colorado Rockies in 2000, and just the second since 1968.

The baseball was stuffed inside Wilson Valdez's locker, and the memory was
indelibly implanted in his head.

Just a few hours after becoming the first Phillies position player to earn
a pitching victory in nearly 66 years, Valdez was back at Citizens Bank
Park Thursday morning and in the lineup at third base for the series
finale with the Cincinnati Reds.

When he stepped to the plate for his first at-bat in the second inning, he
was greeted with a standing ovation, the final tribute for his unlikely
mound work during the Phillies' 5-4, 19-inning victory over the Reds that
started Wednesday night and ended Thursday at 1:19 a.m.

Valdez, 33, said pitching a scoreless inning by retiring reigning National
League MVP Joey Votto and Jay Bruce, the current league leader in home
runs, was the highlight of his journeyman career.

"The fans were cheering like crazy when I was on the mound," he said. "It
was fun for me because I had a chance to pitch, and we took the win."

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Valdez became the first player to
start a game in the field and later earn a victory as a pitcher since Babe
Ruth beat the Philadelphia Athletics on Oct. 1, 1921. Valdez, with his
scoreless inning, was much better than Ruth, who surrendered six runs on
nine hits in four innings against the A's.

Ruth was also hitless that day. Valdez finished with three of his team's
13 hits against the Reds.
