A professor on another discussion group has mentioned in his post in a
comment regarding student framing of questions a very important point.
He notes that students approach academic forums with requests for help
before they have clearly thought through their questions or done any
preliminary research on their proposed topic of research investigation.

This is not a problem specific to advisors and teachers of an individual
asking a question, but rather a much broader problem. Many students in a
broad range of subject disciplines are not learning how to frame a
question and are not learning to think that question through regarding
what they need to ask the literature and information specialists to reach
that information goal.

which one is the best to use to analyze books and/or social

There is never a best, one needs to try various databases and each
will contribute. For Social Groups, I suggest Google Scholar, Google Books,
Sociological Abstracts, PsychInfo and Academic Search Premier as the most
important sources
thank you, will academic search premier have literary criticisms?
Literary Criticisms are best found in MLA and the LION databases
as that is a different topic and the coverage is different. There will also be
some of that content in Academic Search Premier and Google Scholar and Google
Books
.
These examples are a microscopic tip of the iceberg. Add to this that many
students think that web search Google is the only place to go to for finding
information and one can see that there is a yeoman job for the academic
professional community in teaching today's student the skills related to basic
thinking through a problem and coming up with a precise topic for their
research, and then testing that topic to determine if there is a literature
that supports that research topic and makes it viable for a paper. The Sage
Research Methods database is one full text resource that colleges and
universities can purchase to help undergraduate students, graduate students and
faculty learn or add to their research skills in diverse research activities.

So if these pictures are not changed*, the student approaches some search tool,
perhaps Google with a vague question using a search "technique" that violates
most known rules of searching and inherits an indigestable soup of irrelvant
nonsense that leads them nowhere. This problem stems from a lack in at the
K-12 and college levels in many schools of instruction regarding how to use
databases to do searching, along with a more general lack of training in basic
research problem design skills, framing their questions and coming up with
realistic research problems.
