Dear No-Foamers:
After a grueling City Council meeting that started at 6:30pm last night,
where the proposed ban on PS foodware wasn't even considered until 11pm,
and *the final vote took place at 12:30am*, the Council voted 6-1 in
favor of the ban. Clean Water Action delivered a letter to the Mayor
supporting the ban signed by 256 Richmond residents (gathered by our
organizers in just 3 days of knocking on doors) and a similar letter
signed by 11 organizations in CA that supported the ban. Thanks to
those of you who supported the effort and signed our letter.
Kudos to the staff at the City of Richmond Dept. of Public Works who
provided excellent background research, great outreach to stakeholders,
and presented a well developed report to the Council.
I am indebted too to the SF Dept. of the Environment who responded to my
request to attend and provided key information to the City Council-
staffer Alex Dmitriew answered lots of questions from the Council and
was a vital source of compelling information. He even stuck around until
midnight waiting to hear their decision- thanks for your dedication
Alex!
I also must congratulate the Watershed Project, based in the City of
Richmond, whose interns and Executive Director, Linda Hunter, also
presented great information about the impacts of PS litter...we even had
one intern break down in tears while pleading for the Council to take
action... all kinds of tactics used last night!
