Please be advised that a fire at a Con Ed plant in Yonkers has caused an oil spill on the Bronx River, For more information refer to our website, and more information will be coming as we receive it. We will keep you informed of clean up efforts. At this time it is advised not to eneter the river as it may disturb the water and make clean up more difficult. However, observations are critical and appreciated. Please do observe the river where you can and report to us any information that may help with the clean up effort.
On a happy note: Congratulations on laurels well deserved: Fund for the City of New York and Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Announce Recipients of First Annual Awards for Excellence in Teaching Science and Mathematics

Subject: CNN podcast, Election day workshop and inexpensive laptops and the fracking debate

Good Monday All,

1)      The Bronx River Alliance, Ecology Intern Raissa Dally and the now open Concrete Plant Park are featured in a CNN audio podcast <http://www.cnn.com/services/podcasting/>  ! Click on the link and scroll to the bottom. If it is not on the blog as they change daily, you can find it here. <http://podcasts.cnn.net/cnn/services/podcasting/audio/kastenbaum1026.mp3>  Listen and enjoy.   From the CNN introduction:
"The Bronx has a reputation for being a tough place to live. CNN's Steve Kastenbaum says that image is changing and so are the residents of the Bronx, thanks to the ongoing clean-up of the river that runs through it."

2)      The Election Day Workshops still have a few spaces left. Please register soon. The flyer has been updated to answer questions about attendance certification and programs.

3)      Inexpensive laptops from Per Scholas and the Bronx Borough President. http://bronxboropres.nyc.gov/en/gv/press/pressReleases/2009/2009-10-22.html

4)      Enter the debate on Fracking and its effects on our drinking water. Visit  http://www.nyc.gov/html/dep/html/news/natural_gas_drilling.shtml and http://splashdownpa.blogspot.com/2009/09/fracking-and-environment-natural-gas.html to learn more, and then attend the NYC  meeting in November. Details to be placed on our calendar.
