Dating website kicks out thousands of 'fatties'
By Hayley Mick
From Tuesday's Globe and Mail

In post-holiday purge, BeautifulPeople.com boots more than 500 Canadian
members who gained weight, and 5,000 worldwide

The dating website BeautifulPeople.com [http://www.beautifulpeople.com]
has kicked off 553 Canadian members following complaints that they had
gained weight over the holidays.

The castoffs - among 5,000 worldwide - sealed their own fate by posting
new pictures that reportedly showed heftier versions of themselves.
Other members voted them out.

"Brutal, isn't it?" said the site's managing director Greg Hodge.

Mr. Hodge said the company began noticing the trend around U.S.
Thanksgiving. Christmas and New Year's made the problem get worse.

Most of those expelled came from Canada and the United States, but more
than 800 were British. Canadians make up 19,000 of the website's 550,000
members, the company said.

Entry to the site happens after applicants pass a rating process, where
members of the opposite sex vote on an applicant's worthiness based on
photographs and a brief profile. Members whose conduct - or appearance -
is later thrown into question can also be expelled by voting.

Expelled members received an e-mail encouraging them to re-apply when
they are back looking their best.

"As a business, we mourn the loss of any member, but the fact remains
that our members demand the high standard of beauty be upheld," site
founder Robert Hintze said in a release.

"Letting fatties roam the site is a direct threat to our business model
and the very concept for which BeautifulPeople.com was founded."

Mr. Hodge, in Toronto this week on a promotional tour of North America,
was more diplomatic.

"Certainly big can be beautiful. I guess it's just the way we carry it."

Asked if the company was exaggerating the case to generate publicity,
Mr. Hodge said no. "I wish that it was just a publicity grab. For us to
lose 5,000 members is tough from a business perspective."

Of course, the doctor is too fat to get onto the website in the first
place.

He needs to come back down to the "optimum level of
tubbiness".

Do tell. Might that be part of why he has no girlfriend?

All the time he spends sitting behind a computer means he
doesn't get a ton of exercise. Imagine what that does to
his waistline.

Just as men like women with nice bodies, the converse in my
experience is also true.

True enough, although I do believe that women can be more forgiving
in that area, at least where men are concerned if not where other
women and themselves are concerned.

In my experience: women are more likely to find other things that can
compensate for a less-appealing body. Men are more likely to lower
their standards regarding the body to compensate for a lack of
availability, but generally still hold the body as being the most
important feature.

The doctor's waistline is the wrong place for thickness.

Now if he had a rugged, athletic appearance, kind of like a
German biathlon contestant, that is one thing.

But when he looks like a guy who spends his waking life
eating cheeseburgers while typing away on a computer
keyboard, . . ..

A couple of dozen donuts is pretty cheap. Ladies of the

Not every ISP carries Usenet anymore. And if you want to
get it with these ISPs, you have to use alternate methods.
Google for example. Or open an account with SuperNews or a
similar provider in addition to the account with your ISP.

BTW, how are your studies going? I figure the reason you
don't post as much is because you have your nose in the
textbooks.

We'd have to catch it on video and post it to You Tube. It's
