Giant tuna fetches $177,000 at Japan fish auction

233-kilogram fish was the priciest since 2001 when a
200 kilogram tuna sold for a record $220,000

Shino Yuasa
Tokyo The Associated Press
Published on Tuesday, Jan. 05, 2010 12:11PM EST
Last updated on Tuesday, Jan. 05, 2010 12:12PM EST

A giant bluefin tuna fetched 16.3-million ($177,000)
in an auction Tuesday at the world's largest wholesale
fish market in Japan.

The 513-pound (233-kilogram) fish was the priciest
since 2001 when a 440-pound (200 kilogram) tuna sold
for a record 20.2-million ($220,000) at Tokyo's
Tsukiji market.

The gargantuan tuna was bought and shared by the owners
of a Japanese sushi restaurant and a Hong Kong-based
sushi bar, said a market representative on condition of
anonymity because he was not authorized to disclose the
information.

Caught off the coast of northern Japan, the big tuna
was among 570 put up for auction Tuesday. About 40 per
cent of the auctioned tuna came from abroad, including
from Indonesia and Mexico, the representative said.

Japan is the world's biggest consumer of seafood with
Japanese eating 80 per cent of the Atlantic and Pacific
bluefins caught. The two tuna species are the most
sought after by sushi-lovers.

However, tuna consumption in Japan has declined because
of a prolonged economic slump as the world's
second-largest economy struggles to shake off its worst
recession since the Second World War.

Consumers are shying away from eating tuna. ... We are
very worried about the trend, the market
representative said.

Apart from falling demand for tuna, wholesalers are
worried about growing calls for tighter fishing rules
amid declining tuna stocks.

The International Commission for the Conservation of
Atlantic Tunas in November slashed the quota for the
2010 catch by about one-third to 12,250 tonnes a move
criticized by environmentalists as not going far
enough.

I dunno, it's more interesting than some of the other discussions going on here.
The RTD/homosexual agenda one has been done every year since 2005, so provides
nothing new for me while I peruse this group with my tea and biscuits. At least
I now know what Giant Tuna fetches at auction! (You never know, It might come in
handy if the subject ever crops up on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire or
something.)

It's also more interesting than 75 posts by Yads and the Great One
every day calling someone a troll, whore, liar, Nazi, a
homosexual, . . ..

Agreed.

Even if we aren't on the show, we might get a call from someone using
a lifeline like, "Hey Loaf!! Do you know what the most expensive tuna
ever auctioned in Japan cost?"

So why do you keep posting to rec.arts.drwho which is all about obsessing
over a show called Dr Who?

It's a coping mechanism to help him deal with his isolation.

His wife and his cat keep him locked in the basement where he is out
of the way and out of mind. They let him out only when they need the
services of a man. For example, when they need someone to clear the
snow, cut the grass or provide sexual pleasure beyond what is
available using the family Sybian.

Without an Internet connection, he'd have no contact with other human
beings except at feeding time, when his wife replenishes the food and
water in his dishes.

Good grief, you really are a two faced freaking little moron aren't you.
You have as much backbone as a reed and you just sway in the direction the
wind blows. One moment you are buddy buddy with this Sharx character and
next your applauding someone else kill filing him.

It's no wonder you have taken up residence in so many kill files of others.
Go back to looking for your succubus, it's your only friend at this point

Attitude of an attention whore is an understatment. He
thrives on being the centre of attention, and will say some
pretty asanine things to get people talking about him like
we are right now.
