Over the past few weeks, my shaw cable internet connection has been
going down for no apparent reason. Happened a lot over night but it
does happen occasionally during the day time. The way I have been
fixing it is to unplug the power to the cable modem and plug it back
in.

Anyone noticed a similar problem recently? I haven't called Shaw to
complain yet.

Nope, it's been working flawlessly over the past
few weeks - just like in the past 10 years, or so.

If you have a router on your connection, it may be crapping out on you.

I agree that is a possibility. I would also say a possibility could be
the modem crapping out as well (new or old).

I've seen the exact same thing happening to a friend's place over in St.
Albert... probably the last week or so it has been choking. Except it got
the the point where power-cycling the modem did not help at all.

He gave a call to shaw the other day and they have resolved the issue afaik.

plug the power direct into the wall and bypass your surge protector.

Same was happening with me.
I didn't do anything other than pulling the plug on the modem, but it hasn't
been doing it for a few weeks or so.

No the issue is shaw. I had to switch over to my telus connection to get a
working line. Shaw oversells their service past capacity so it slows down
the more people use it ina given area.

Call and complain get them to send a tech out to fix it and when he shows
up neglect to be there and tell them its their shitty network.

My computer says that I am still connected to shaw but they are not
connected to the world wide web. It usually lasts for at least 20 min,
sometimes up to 45 min. When I have called, the help guy claims that he
doesn't know anything about it and has suggested that it is my equipment.
This has happened for years and my equipment is still up and running well,
hardware and software. By the time we get to the reboot part of his
troubleshooting, the service is back. It appears that someone in the back
room is doing routine maintenance. If I have the patience, the service comes
back without me or the helpdesk doing anything.
VERY ANNOYING

Actually what is happening is Edmonton is in a huge boom right now, and
normally there are 800 people on a given node, with 200 reservations for
business customers. They also just purchased two new blocks of ip
addresses. One is 96.52.xxx.xxx and the other I can't remember right now
to satisfy the growth here.

Many areas in town have about 8-10% over capacity on nodes, and Shaw is
in the process of doing massive node splits to accommodate the new
users, and make the service more stable for existing users.

I know this because I had the same problems for months, and it was just
fixed by a node split in my area.

I also had the new 96.52 ip address and any site that used ssl was
unreachable by the new ip address until about 2 weeks ago. While they
were fixing the issue, they gave me a static line with a 68.xxx.xxx.xxx
ip address.

Just for all the hassle, I now don't have to pay for my phone or
internet from Shaw for 6 months, and afterwards my rate on the i-Extreme
package was dropped from $44 something a month to $24.99 until I leave
the service.

If you are having issues, you _need_ to call in. That is the only way
they get enough complaints for the maintenance teams to get tasked for
repairs or splits.

You could also try moving your router a few feet from your modem if you
have one of the newer Motorola modems. Models 1500 and 1501.

They get interference from wireless connections. I only found this out
by reading the dslreports.com forums.

The problem also could be your router is flaking out if it old, or if
you boosted the wireless range on it in the settings.

Try a quick reset on it and go from there.

Shaw is always in the Process of doing these so called node splits, just
because they purcase a new block of Ip addresses doesnt mean that the
service slow downs will stop just means that they have enough IPs to assign,
however it still amounts to line ups to use the internet. the fact is you
can only put so much through a pipe at one time without a backup

That's the 1st thing you should do is phone Shaw to see if they
are having outage issues. If they say YES or if it's determined
by them that your connection is having problems you can also
bitch about lack of service and get some free stuff like PPV movies,
or money off your next bill OR BOTH.

Gotta love that excuse its the router, you must work for shaw. When all
else fails blame the customers hardware, not of couse the DHCP server on
shaws end dropping the connection and not offering correctly. Most tech
either ont he phone or feild not truely know how to fix the common issues as
they dont know the route causes as improper troubleshooting is always done
and the use the banaid approch to fixing it, wheter its shaw or telus its
the same Power cycle did that fix it yes good to go. The answer is no its
not good to go, call in and demand a tech be dispatched untill its fixed

I used to have this problem. Shaw finally
came and noticed it was the outside line. Changed it and it never
needs power-cycling again. Dunno if thats all he did though.
