Greetings and Zerberts!

Ladies and Gentlemen, we are very excited to announce that STRAWBERRIES are IN! The time is now. If we can afford it we'd like to get strawberries into both the Fruit shares and the Produce shares. We are going to work hard to make this week's produce shares 100% local-- no guarantees, but we are very close now. Fruit will definitely be part local and part national.

With the Midwest farmer's season finally kicking into full gear, we are finally getting harvest reports worth talking about. We were fooled by the brief warm spell in March and were able to offer a surprising increase in early spring local harvesting, but subsequent frosts put everyone's crops behind schedule. Be aware that fruit trees this year took a hard hit, beginning to flower early with the heat and then getting damaged by the freezing temperatures in Michigan and Illinois. We are going to work closely with our farms to ensure the highest quality and largest amounts of local fruit can be available for our shares.

As the veggies come in, we are going to fully transition to WEEKLY pickups-- maintaining our zero-obligation, pay-as-you-go structure for your freedom and ease. We are also in the process of developing custom subscription services for those seeking more simplicity. Be on the lookout for a slight increase in announcements as we wrangle this into gear, and especially please give us your feedback about your wants and needs for local foods. Email us directly at edible...@gmail.com with any feedback. If you haven't already done so, please fill out our member survey here:  http://tinyurl.com/eamembersurvey

And Enjoy!

Organic Gardening 101: THIS SUNDAY 5/27!

Organic gardening, sometimes referred to as sustainable gardening, is a method of working with plants and the ecosystem in your garden, apartment, or house to nurture plants to maturity.  Conventional agriculture uses many harmful chemicals to grow food, and focuses on growing the plant rather than nurturing the ecosystem the plant is a part of.  As a result, the soil, insects, plants are less than healthy- which is transferred to humans when we eat produce grown in such ways.

We’ll talk about various ways to cut out harmful chemicals in your gardening practices by using: integrated pest management, maintaining healthy soil, using compost, companion planting, and making homemade food based sprays.   Organically homegrown food has a higher micronutrient profile, and is healthier for you because it is fresher.  By growing your own food, you create a connection with your source of nourishment from the ground up.
