Microsoft has recently released a free security product which you can read about and download at this link.  It is compatible with Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7. It has very good reviews as an anti virus program and anti spyware/malware program. There are two issues you should be concerned with if you want to use their product.

The first issue is that it does not scan email.

The second issue is that it does not have a two way firewall.

In the first case, if you only use web mail, your web mail service scans all your email and attachments before you read them, so you could consider using the free Security Essentials package,  if you have a two way firewall.

In the second case, if you have upgraded to Windows 7, it has a two way firewall built in. It works, but it is kind of "clunky" to set outbound rules.  Otherwise XP and Vista have one way firewalls that are "better than nothing",

If you use client email, such as Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird, etc, don't use Microsoft's Security Essentials. Well over half of all computer infections come from email infected with malware.

If you have an old version of SystemSuite, you can disable its anti virus product and continue to use its firewall and maintenance tools with Security Essentials.

If you like SystemSuite and would like to upgrade to version 9 or to renew version 9's subscription let me know. I have recently been able to order new SystemSuite 9 licenses.  If you want the disk and manual, the price for a three license set is $22.16 with shipping and taxes.  If you just want a new license, the download version is $19.00 total(no tax or shipping) for three licenses.

SystemSuite hasn't released version 10 yet. I am using version 9 on Windows 7 with no problems.

Cheers,

Dave

Hi Dave -

We purchased System Suite 10 w/ 3 licenses (the complete box w/ manual and disk) from Amazon.com.  It arrived a week ago - I uninstalled SS9 and installed 10 and it appears to load a little faster on my older XP PC.  Cost was $49.99 and Amazon had free shipping.  The box included a $10 rebate from Avanquest.  Essentially the same layout within the program - just a new "face".

Hi Dave;

That is interesting;  SystemSuite usually has a discounted upgrade offering when the new version comes out. Their tech rep said there wasn't much different between version 9 and 10.

So, I have been ordering SystemSuite 9 for $19 per three license sets.

Are you using version 10 with Windows 7?

Cheers,

Dave
