Hey all,
Paul Liem, Korean Policy Institute will be speaking in our AAS 865 class 11/18 at 4:10pm. Here's an EastBay Express article with a progressive perspective on North Korea and as you'll see in Paul's message below, a lot of right-wing extremists have posted negative comments. It's a lengthy article, but give a lot of comprehensive background about North Korea and the U.S. militarism of South Korea, so when you get a chance, please read and comment! The journalist interviewed Elaine Kim of UC Berkeley as well, who was at the Ethnic Studies conference at SFSU. Please feel free to pass along!
Thanks,
Kei

dear everyone,

i just wanted to forward paul liem's email to this listserv--sorry for any duplications.  please note that comments don't automatically post on the east bay express site--i'm not sure if they're vetted beforehand, but they won't, in any case, appear right away.  (i submitted mine about 45 minutes ago, and it has yet to appear.)

many thanks for standing solid on this.

christine

Hello all,

As you may know the East Bay Express featured an article on North Korea this week, written from a progressive point of view, for a change.  The writer quotes several of us who have been active in the East Bay in reunification work.  Unfortunately the only folks who have weighed in on the EB express website have been really right wing.

I cannot believe that most Americans are this close minded and hostile, but these seem to be the only people who speak out, actually, against, peaceful engagement with NK.  In particular the notion that NK govt is starving its people and that those of us in the U.S. who advocate engagement are apologists for mass murder can only be intended to silence any other points of view.

Please check out the article and the readers’ comments, and if you are so inclined, please post your own comments.  It would be great to see some reasonable points of view aired in public instead of the same old idiocy.

It’s bad enough to have no voice in DC let alone in our own backyard.

Check it out at http://www.eastbayexpress.com/ebx/BrowseComments?oid=1224351.

Thanks,

Paul
