Subject: double listings for same location?
Hi all, I've been an eBird fan for a while, but just this fall moved
to a new state and location. I seem to have landed in sort of an
"eBird desert" with very few reports being submitted in my new county
where I live, so I've been having fun trying to explore different
places to bird in my county, trying to get it "on the map", so to
speak. Not that it's easy though! I had one favorite birding spot
along the river in a residential area, and I was stopped by the police
one day, saying a resident had reported a "suspicious character casing
the houses with binoculars". LOL, yes I had my binoculars, but was
trying to look for birds on the river, totally opposite direction from
the houses. Nevertheless the police advised me not to come back. Quite
a shame since there are very few places that have public access
viewing of the river in my county, and I was hoping to see some
migrant winter ducks..

One of my spots is my own yard, where I also report birds from. And
recently I have noticed something odd. When I go to submit a report I
get the dropdown list to select from "My Locations". And I notice my
home address is listed TWICE on the drop down list. My street is a
Drive, abbreviated DR, and I notice the first of the listings for my
address finishes with "Dr" and no period after it, and the second
instance finishes with "Dr.", with a period.

This was confusing to me as I don't know how this happened. For the
longest time my address only showed up once in the drop-down list, and
I certainly haven't added a second instance. I didn't want two
listings, and forgetting which was which, and having reports from my
yard being splits between two locations. I went to My Ebird-Manage my
Locations, planning to delete one of them from there. But when I look
at my locations there my address is only listed once, the "Dr."
version with the period. So I can't delete the extra one as there is
nothing to delete.

But if I do to the "explore data", "yard totals", and go to edit my
yard, I get a dropdown list of my locations, which I can add a
checkmark to, to include in my yard. And in *this* list I see my
address twice, the one with the Dr without the period as well as the
Dr. with the period. As far as I know this second one is the one I
have always used. I don't know where the first one without the period
came from, and I'd like to delete it, but don't know how since it
doesn's show up in the "manage my locations" list. Any ideas?

While you are in "Manage My Locations" you might try sorting your list in
different ways, You can click on the column head to sort the list. Maybe
there is some other spelling difference in the two locations that is not
putting them in the same place the list. You can also go way down to the
bottom and click on  "Show All" (at the bottom right of the screen). This
will show all of your locations in one list.

Or try entering part of your address in the search box at the top of the
list. If there are two of them there they both should show up.

I'm assuming that you didn't by accident check the "Suggest as a hot spot"
box and that somehow this got entered as a shared hot spot. (I review
suggestions for these in Ohio and we don't put our back yards in as hot
spots as there must be public access.) You will note in Manage My Locations
the column headed "Type" show whether the location is "P" (Personal) or "S"
(Shared hot spot).

I can't explain for sure what is happening in your list.

Sorry, no additional suggestions, but I have a somewhat related problem: I added a hotspot called "Braddock Bay" (NY) which always shows on the drop-down menu for "Select..." but never shows up on "Manage My Locations."  I keep looking for it because I want to hide it from the drop-down.

Thanks, alas I have tried those. "Show all" only shows the address
with the period. I've used the search button to search on my street
number and it only turns up the one entry with the period. I guess I
have to just remember to ignore the first entry but it sure is
annoying as the data is clearly coming from somewhere!

I have the exact same problem but I have a hunch as to where the problem
originated.  It started when I signed up and submitted data for project
feeder watch.  In my case the added location name is sufficiently different
from my original location name that it is fairly easy to just ignore, but
it'd be nice to be able to hide it.

I have a similar issue.

I have two locations that I originally named by address (such as 1234
Main St.) but later renamed to a generic identification (such as Main
St.). Both designations show up this way:  Step 1: Where Did You
Bird?  >>>> Select from "My Locations" >>>> (and there they are, both
ways).  This is the ONLY place that BOTH designations occur.  I
ignore the incorrect ones, but of course I'd rather they not be there
at all.

Over the years I have renamed numerous personal locations but ONLY
these two -- the ONLY two whose names started with a number -- appear
twice for no apparent reason.

If you can edit the one that shows Dr. with the period, add a note such as "use this." - ?

Wow, interesting clue. I also just signed up for Project Feeder Watch
at a new address (I had done PFW for years, but at my old home in NJ).
And you're right, that's probably just about the time I saw this
problem pop up. Hmm, wonder if I can go edit my location name over at
PFW? I'll have to try that.

Just as a followup, apparently the extra entry in My Locations is
indeed a result of signing up for Project Feeder Watch at my new
address. I went and looked and saw my address there without the period
following "Dr". It took a bit of hunting, but I finally found where I
could change it at PFW, and added the period, hoping that would
"merge" both entries into one. But it didn't. Instead it updated My
Locations so that I had two entries *exactly* identical, both with the
"123 My Dr." format. So even more confusing. So I then took Dave
Spier's suggestion, and added a little arrow "<==" pointing to the
address I wanted to use for eBird.

Odd as my former address was used for years for both eBird and PFW,
and yet I only have one instance of that address in my My Locations
menu.

Several years ago my Feederwatch location showed up in my eBird
locations as well.  I had also given it the same name as my home
location in eBird.  Then it stopped showing up on the list.  I have no
idea why.  I think there used to be a column under Manage My Locations
for the project name and that's how I knew it was the Feederwatch
location.

All

Project Feedewatch locations are available for data entry in eBird, but not
for location management. To do that you need to go to Feederwatch.

Thanks
