Where are the Android apps for eBird? With all the Android based smart
phones and now tablets (e.g. Kindle Fire) it seems there would be a
ready made market for something like this. We just picked up a Kindle
Fire tablet over the holidays and it would be ideal platform for
birding apps (even though it is WiFi only my guess is a mobile
connected version is in the works.) I'm also on the verge of going to
a smart phone and would prefer Android despite the frustrating
situation that a couple of the most popular birding apps are only
available for iPhone (e.g. Birdseye and Birdjam). There is no doubt
that the iPhone/iPad/iOs environment is top notch but there is now a
large and growing Android market w/ new and improving devices coming
out regularly.
I didn't notice the earlier discussion on this but have now been made
aware of it. Good to know there are some existing apps and some work
in progress in the Android environment.
thanks, Charles.

Hi Charles,
A Vermont company, Green Mountain Digital, that creates the Audubon
Guides apps among many others is working on adding eBird to the
Android bird app they have. It is already in the iPhone/iTouch/iPad
bird app. Look for a release of this app sometime around March in time
for spring migration.

BirdsEye Log exists to streamline data entry into eBird from your
smartphone in the field. It was designed and developed by lifelong
birders who are also active eBirders. You can use your current GPS
location to create new personal locations. You can create checklists
even when there is no internet connection for submission when you are
back in cell range. It also allows you to enter checklists for public
hotspots and your existing personal locations. It uses eBird
checklists, so you are prompted for confirmation on the spot.
Feel free to email me if you have any questions or comments.
It's a very nice app. I was part of the beta test group, so I've been using it for a few weeks. I highly recommend it. On Feb 11, 2012 3:46 PM, "BirdsEye BirdingApp" <birdseye.bird...@gmail.com> wrote:

Birdseye Log for Android device changes the landscape entirely. Also a beta tester; if you are remotely interested in listing, this is the easiest way to shortcut access to contributing to the eBird data base. Really one stop shopping!
If are not an active Lister, but wish to contribute to the advances that eBird is providing the community beyond listing, do not miss this one.
The one thing I really like that Birdwatcher's Diary does that BirdsEye Log doesn't do is allow me to use the same checklist all day, changing locations as I go. When I output the data, I receive a .csv file that is ready to upload to eBird that is organized by location. It makes it so easy to continue logging birds since I don't have to restart a checklist at each location - if I have Northern Cardinals at all 6 places I've gone that day, I don't have to find and enter NOCA at each new location. Is this feature something that might be added to Birdseye Log?

Yeah - I think with the integrated posting of each individual checklist that there might not be a need for that type of consolidated checklist. Or maybe I'm missing something? On Feb 12, 2012 12:25 PM, "Karen Horn" <thekar...@gmail.com> wrote:

When I first started using BWD it took me a few false starts to "get" the daily checklist idea too. The real benefit is that all day I add to the same list of birds without having to recreate it at each location.

Good discussion. One point to add that may or may not be relevant to
this discussion: when creating checklists in BirdsEye Log you start
with the checklist of birds for that location provided by eBird, so
you aren't scrolling through all the birds in North America.
I wish to add that Nature Lister for the Android has everything eBirders (and butterfly or mammals people) would want. We listened to eBird staff and made sure that the eBird distance and effort protocols are part of the package:
