I've just updated my SupraExpress 56e intl to the v.90 standard, when
dialling into the 0845 333 1111 line with no inti string I get, sorry
computer is not answering, when I but in a inti string of ' AT&F1 ' it
works.
Basically what I wanna know is, is it still running at the fastest speed
with the above inti string.

Cheers

There is no V.90 standard ratified for use in the UK yet. Our service
on the new numbers is ready to go as soon as it is properly and reliably
available - we'll be making an announcement when this happens.

Until then, flashing your modem to V.90 won't give you any performance
benefits.

unless you're currently using v0.519 modem software, in which case
upgrade to either a newer k56 or to v90 or you'll get the
connection-slowing-down problem.

As to the 'computer not answering' message, set your connection timeout
higher. It takes a bit longer for a v90 connection to be started up than
a k56 one and sometimes takes too long for the Windows default timeout.

I think I've isolated the problem with Diamond SupraExpress 56e modems.
I downloaded all of the BIOS updates from their website:

http://www.diamondmm.de/diamondde/eng/support/drv_d.htm

and proceded to test out each one with the various easynet dial-in
numbers. Only dialling in on 0845 3331111 with the 0298 release of the
BIOS
update (version 1.120-08) allowed a speed higher than 33.6k. My modem
took
twice as long as usual (pre- last Sunday...) to connect and then only
managed
40,000Kbps whereas last week it got a regular 48/50 with the newer 0498
release I had been using (v 1.120-09). The Diamond v90 update didn't
work.

So in plain English, I've downgraded my modem BIOS by one version
release to get it to connect to easynet faster than 33.6k. Even with
this BIOS the connection rate is quite poor, and often only gets to the
'Verifying username and password...' phase before disconnecting.

I've attached the diamond BIOS update release documents, for each of the
K56 BIOS updates above.

Increasing the timeout helped, but Windows seemed too eager to cut me
off.

I hope this information helps somebody.

Me too - it's extensive and well-researched, so thank you for posting it
here.
