Sy'an had had his mug at his elbow as he leaned over and flirted with the woman sitting next to him, but finally she seemed to get fed up with him and after giving him a look fit to peel paint off walls she got up and stalked away.
Sy'an sighed, reached for his mug... and found it gone.
He turned around, and saw the man sitting next to him drinking out of it.
A stranger, which made sense, because no guy who knew Sy'an would have dared. (Girls were always welcome to steal his alcohol. Men, no.)
"That's not the mug that was sitting there, is it?" Sy'an asked with casual innocence as he indicated to the Vintner that he wanted another ale. "Someone brought that up here a few minutes ago saying they'd seen their ex spiking it with something. Probably something to have him spending the night shitting his brains out," he added cheerfully.
Sy'an had resisted to urge to bite the brownrider's damn finger when he raised it as if to silence him, but at that response he blinked, and then threw back his head and laughed. Not bad, not bad. This guy might be fun to talk to.
"If your definition of an 'alright place' is being able to sit your ass on a latrine and shit your guts out for a couple hours, I'd hate to see the Weyr that *didn't* meet your standards," Sy'an drawled. "What's your name, skinny? What lack-of-shithole are you from?"

Sy'an gave the other man a contemptuous sneer. He wasn't sure what the man was lying about - his name, his Weyr of origin, or both - or if he were just setting up for a lie - but he'd grown up amidst people who lied as easily as they breathed; he could tell when someone was trying to pull one over on him. Or about to.
Whatever. He didn't give a damn anyway. It almost made the guy more entertaining."Sy'an. Bronze Volth," he drawled with arrogance and pride, and shot H'lok a condescending look - what kind of dragonrider didn't introduce their dragon's name alongside their own? "Transferred out of Southern, been here 'bout a Turn. Which Wing they put you in, Scarecrow? I'm Diamond Sea." The guy looked like a straggly scarecrow, and K'ro sounded like crow. Perfect nickname. And even a flattering one at that! Guy should be grateful.
"Yeah, DS is low-flying. They need expert flyers like me and Volth cleaning up the mess the higher wings let through. And wouldn't know about your Wingleader," Sy'an replied with a half-shrug and a swig of his drink. "I don't really bump shoulders with rankers if I can help it, so only Wingleaders I can recognize are the ones I've flown under. And the Weyrleader," he added, snickering. "He's hilarious."
