It had been a couple of days since the letter from home and Ozmyr had a bit of time to mull it over. He had decided that he wasn't going to let it bother him but actually managing to accomplish that was something he hadn't managed yet. A bit more sullen and withdrawn then normal he made his way out for supper after having spent most of the day alone with his thoughts. Sighing a bit as he entered the dining hall the young man got in line and, with only a minimal delay, had his food in hand. Now to find somewhere to sit.

At first he thought he would want to sit alone. He just didn't feel very social yet. Then, after looking around he saw K'nek sitting off to himself. For a moment he paused, not sure what he wanted to do. Then, seeming to decide that maybe some company would help his spirits he walked over and joined the greenrider.

"Hello there," he said, trying to sound a bit more chipper than he felt. "Is this seat taken?"

"Aye, by ye," K'nek answered, smiling as he noticed that it was Ozmyr who had approached. He was glad to see that he had not frightened the Candidate away, and despite his own slightly lonely demeanor, he seemed genuinely happy to see someone join him. He motioned to the seat and said, "Have a seat. How're ye?" he asked curiously around a bite of his meal.

Smiling a bit despite his sour mood Ozmyr took the seat opposite his friend and settled in.

"Oh, I've been better," he said, shrugging a bit. "Letter from home and my father isn't pleased with my choice to come here. It wont change my mind about staying mind you but it still sort of bugs me. How are things with you? Your looking well."

He didn't want to bring anyone else down just because he was in a foul mood. Actually he hoped K'nek could help to cheer him up a bit. Maybe tonight would be a good chance to meet his green like he had promised before.

"I havena heard much from my family since I came here myself," K'nek answered, nodding with understanding. Aside from hearing about his brother's death in the mine collapse, he really had not had very much contact with his family since he left. "I think ye tend to build a new family here. It isna as though ye ever replace the one ye left... but ye build a new one," he said.

"Thank ye, by the way," he added, answering Ozmyr's compliment. "Things arena so bad. They never are, I think, once ye really think about it. In fact, I think I've been about as good as I have been lately in quite some time." He seemed rather smiley, at least.

Ozmyr looked up and nodded at K'nek's words. It made sense to him after all. In fact it rather fit with his decision to build a new life....at least once he came to terms with how his old one seemed to fall apart. Something else though caught his attention in the greenriders demeanor.

"Hmmmmm? Your awfully pleased about something," he said, a smile slowly coming to his face. "Something good happen?"

Ozmyr's smile widened into a full fledged grin. For a moment he too felt like he was gossiping over something forbidden but then remembered it was just a fact of life here. Any stigma to it was just something he carried over from his days at home.

"Moth? Is that what they call the people waiting? I.....uhmmm...was trying to figure out what that was all about but didn't know who to ask. So you found somebody then? And enjoyed yourself? Thats really great!"

He was genuinely happy for his friend for this. More to the point, he also wanted to know about this moth business. It sounded wonderfully decadent and a part of him, the teenaged boy part that was no free from most of the restrictions he had been under, was terribly curious and more than a bit excited.

"Oh! Aye. Flight moths are drawn to flights like regular ol' moths are drawn to flame." K'nek grinned and chuckled to himself at having to explain that bit of weyrfolk terminology. "I ran into a bluerider who didn't win, and I took him back up to my weyr. And we, uh... well, ye know." He grinned like a fool.

Grinning now himself Ozmyr nodded, filing that bit of information away for future reference. Flight moths eh? That was a good thing to know.

"I can't even imagine what that must be like though...I mean being bonded to a dragon and feeling what they do while in flight lust. That must be so.....well, even saying it's overwhelming doesn't seem to say enough. And they tell me that a gold should rise soon? Wont that be like a major holiday for the Weyr?"

Well, a major holiday for the candidates at the very least since their would be eggs on the sands.

"Aye, there will likely be quite a bit of celebratin' one way or another," K'nek said, grinning to acknowledge what he felt was a pretty clever double entendre. "Bein' up in the air with Nohruth while she's flyin' is... well, it's hard to put into words, I think. There's somethin' of losin' yerself, but she gains as much of me as I lose, I guess. If that makes sense."

It didn't make a lot of sense to the young man but he had certainly felt something when the little green was in the air. A gold would obviously be a much stronger sensation he reasoned. That thought, the notion of losing control like that, both excited and scared him in equal measure. The really hard part to wrap his mind around though was in trying to understand what you lost to the dragon and what you got back. That part would take some more time to comprehend apparently.

"It's going to take me awhile to understand all that," he admitted. "I talked to another rider...a wing third named Brett, who tried to explain to me what the moment of Impression was like. Guess I'm just going to have to wait and see."

Pausing a moment to eat a bite of his food Ozmyr's face still showed that he was thinking deeply, though the answers were still elusive.

"You offered before to introduce me to your green. Do you think she would be open to a visit this evening? I don't have to be back to the barracks till lights out after all...."

"Aye, Nohruth'd love to meet ye!" K'nek answered, brightening noticeably as the topic shifted more directly to his green. "She's a sweetheart, she is, real nice. Ye'll like her, I know." He began to eat a little faster to hurry the meeting. He really had no particular reason aside from the excitement of sharing something you loved with someone else.

Ozmyr was feeling a little emboldened by his decision to now live according to the Weyr's ways. He also really did like K'nek as a friend...and had to admit he found the other man attractive. It might have been a bit selfish but he wanted to explore those fantasies he always had...both about men and women...and to do so before the next gold flight. The idea of being totally unprepared and then out of control bothered him more than anything.

"I hope she will," he said, munching down a bit more of the food. "I want to learn more about dragons of course....and....more about some other things before the next gold rises...."

He gave K'nek a tentative glance, more bold than he had been before but still a bit nervous.

 Ozmyr smiled and nodded.

"I couldn't ask for more. Since I guess I'm like....free now...I don't want to wonder what life is like anymore. I want to live it if that makes sense. Without having to hide or feel ashamed or any of that stuff."

The young man was quiet and thoughtful for a moment, trying to find the words to fit what was on his mind.

"I like you a lot and want to know you better. Theres some of the girls I want to get to know better too...but one thing at a time you know."

He blushed a bit and hoped K'nek would understand all the confusion going on in his head right now.

"I probably had all that same help ye had, only I was just too thick to notice," K'nek admitted. "Come on, then." He said with a grin, eagerly standing up to head out to the bowl. He was so in a rush that he did not, in fact, introduce Ozmyr directly to Nohruth despite the fact that he had to climb atop her to make it to their weyr.

((Uhm... K'nek, I... I'm so, so sorry, but... I just don't think I can lift you both! You're both so big...)) his green protested shyly as K'nek offered his hand down to help Ozmyr up. K'nek let loose a booming laugh and paused.

When K'nek slid back to the ground Ozmyr's hand tightened reflexively on one of the nearby flying straps. His eyes widened a bit but he didn't want to look cowardly or totally out of place on a dragons back.

"Well....alright...if you think that's alright," he said, trying not to sound as nervous as he felt. "How do I get her to go?"

He had the good sense not to say 'giddyup' or anything quite that stupid but the poor smith was totally out of his element here and had no idea what to do. To his credit though he stood his ground...or in this case sat on it...and tried to play this out as best he could.

"Just ask her nice like," K'nek answered, reaching up to pat Ozmyr's leg and give it a reassuring squeeze. "Donna worry yer head none; she wonna drop ye."

Ozmyr didn't like feeling uncertain or out of control. He also didn't like looking like the star struck tourist which he feared must be what was happening now. The feeling of the dragon beneath him gave the young man a feeling of excitement he couldn't have imagined possible. The squeeze on his leg only heightened that feeling...though in a different manner.

"Alright," he said, trying not to sound as uncertain as he felt. Laying a hand gently on the green neck in front of him the young smith responded to her mental reassurances. "Can we go on up to the K'nek's weyr please?"

Taking all the care in the world she could muster not to jostle or shake Ozmyr, Nohruth got up a bit of a rolling, running start, flapped her wings and propelled herself into the air and up toward K'nek's (and her) ledge. She went as slowly as she could while maintaining her climb and alighted as gently as she could manage on the stone. She flattened herself as low to the ground as was possible and looked back and Ozmyr, her eyes whirling with worry.

((Was that OK?)) she asked.

He had of course flown before. When he had been brought to the back of the Weyr on the back of a search dragon it had seemed the most magical moment of his life. That had been nothing as compared to this short hop all alone on the dragons back. True, it wasn't HIS dragon per se....but for a moment he could pretend.

Once they landed he realized he had a tight hold around the green's neck....not from fear but just from the desire to hold her close. A single tear rolled down his face at the wonder of it all. It took a moment then for him to realize she had spoken to him.

"It was better then ok," he replied, wiping at his face. "It was wonderful....thank you very much."

With that he slid from her back, though none to expertly.

"I'll just wait over here I guess...."

That had been nothing as compared to this short hop all alone on the dragons back. True, it wasn't HIS dragon per se....but for a moment he could pretend.

Nohruth leaned in to affectionately blow a puff of breath over Ozmyr's hair. She did like him - even if K'nek had not, she would have, though she could not imagine K'nek disliking anyone so objectively wonderful.

((You can wait inside if you want. I'll only be a minute,)) she promised and turned very carefully mindful of her tail to dive off the ledge and back toward the bowl to fetch K'nek.

"Alright," he said, smiling a bit at the dragon's gesture. Her mind touch felt so sweet and gentle. He had only heard the 'voice' of a few of them but they all seemed just as different and full of personality as any people might. That thought brought another smile to his face as Ozmyr stepped to the side to give Nohruth some room.

Watching her fly away he was torn then. To wait inside as she had offered? Or to watch here on the ledge for their return? After a moments thought he opted to wait in the doorway. It felt wrong to just go into K'nek's place without him there...plus he wanted to watch the dragon in flight every chance he got.

Shortly, Nohruth returned to the ledge with K'nek in tow. "There we go. How was the ride?" he asked as he slid off of his green's back and then hugged her muzzle, laying his forehead against hers for a moment.

"The ride was perfect," Ozmyr replied, joining K'nek beside Nohruth and laying his arm across her neck as well. His other hand he let find it's way to his friends shoulder and gave a gentle squeeze. "She was very considerate and gentle. Thank you for the chance to fly with her. It would be easy to get hooked on that you know....flying just seems so....magical."

K'nek smiled brightly and turned to touch Ozmyr's shoulder as well. He knew Nohruth could not help but be considerate and gentle - it was just not in her nature to do otherwise - but it was good to hear such praise of his sweet girl.

"Yer very welcome, my friend. Ye'll get another chance on the way down, innit? And any time ye'd like to visit again. Come on inside, then," he said, turning to walk that way. Nohruth waited for Ozmyr to follow behind.

Following along behind, curious to see what might await him beyond, Ozmyr gave voice to a question that had occurred to him.

"Is that really the only way to get up to the rider's rooms? Does everyone have to fly in?"

That didn't make much sense to the young man. How could they get visitors or to their weyr if the dragon was injured? Not that he would say no to another flight whenever it came time to leave but he did want to understand everything he could about how things worked here.

"Not everyone," K'nek answered. "But cuttin' the tunnels is a right long thing to be done by hand, and they donna go so high as these smaller, higher weyrs, mostly. Some of the higher weyrs are connected to each other, too, but not with the lower ones. If ye canna fly up, there's always weyrs down on the ground. There's a blue what got his eyes put out a while back, and he lives on the ground."

Ozmyr paused for a second, hearing about the poor sightless blue. Without eyes the dragon couldn't fly he supposed and that sounded like a fate worse then death....to have the power of flight and then be unable to use it.

"That is sad," he said in a low tone, staying close on K'nek's heels. "It's easy to forget sometimes how dangerous this life is. I guess that must be why everyone lives with such passion here?"

The young smith knew there would be several ways to interpret that which still made him smile despite his sympathy for the blue. It seemed perhaps that the Weyr's ways were rubbing off on him already.

"Aye, that it is," K'nek agreed, a grin spreading across his own face as well. "I must say, yer quite a bit quicker a study than I am when it comes to understandin' this place - and I've been here for a while. It helps to have ye talk it out for me."

"I don't know about being a quick study," Ozmyr said, closing the distance between himself and K'nek and putting a hand on his hip. "But I never do anything half way. Now that I've learned I can be free....well, maybe I'm a little bit over bold now."

The last was whispered in a low tone as he leaned in close to the other man. His own heart was hammering as if it wanted to burst from his chest. Ozmyr was both excited and scared half to death at the same time. But he wasn't going to let either emotion slow him down now.
