Subject: Recap of July Meeting/Aug Meeting Ideas

(posted to the Adobe Groups page at

Hello All:

Quick recap of our first meeting at New Horizons:

   1. There were some hiccups that we'll hopefully have fixed for upcoming
   meetings.
      - The projector has a VGA adapter, and my laptop only had a DVI
      adapter.
      - The doors to the office building lock (from the outside) at 6pm.  I
had to stand guard to let people in.

      2. In spite of the hiccups above, the presentation on Balsamiq Mockups
went well.  Everyone (all 3) seemed duly impressed with the capabilities and
functionality of the product.  We did *not* raffle off a license, as there
were only 3 people in attendance, and the stipulation for the free license
was a presentation to a group of at least 15.  Had there been 12 or so, it
might have been OK to fudge through.  Three would have been pushing it :)

   3. We spoke briefly about the direction of the group, and my desire to
make the group more interactive.  Traditionally, at least in the groups that
I've been a part of, the agenda is... folks show up, listen to a speaker,
maybe ask a few questions, then take off.  I'd like to change that up a
bit.  Maybe some meetings we'll just have roundtable discussions.

For example, the BACFUG's next meeting (tonight!) is on "Planning your
migration to a Framework".  I think it might be interesting to have a
discussion on why you might want to move to a framework at all.  What are
   the relative pros and cons?

There was talk of having the group break up into smaller groups (which
would be better if more than 3 were in attendance) and take 5-10 minutes to
solve a Project Euler (http://projecteuler.net/) problem.  Then each
group would show their solution.  It would be interesting to see the
different approaches that different folks take to solve the same problem.

Some of you might have noticed that there's been a little bit of
discussion regarding OO usage in CF (yes, snark) :)  I think we have various
skill levels within the group, ranging from "very comfortable with OO" to
"I'm trying to get there" to "um... what?".  That might provide for another
   fun-filled discussion.

I'm not against the idea of presentations, but if the presentations could
be more 'hands-on' lab-type presentations, that'd be ideal.

Thoughts?  Do people want that type of interactivity?  If so, I'm open to
ideas on subject/topics.  I'd like to get the next 4 meetings (which will
get us through 2009) set up.

   4. Beer and chips at Casa Orozco after the meeting.

I'm going to leave the topic open for the next couple of days and see what
kind of feedback I get.  I'd like to have the topic for the next meeting
(Tues, August 4) posted by the beginning of next week at the very latest.
Your suggestions are welcomed, as are any feedback or comments.

Thanks!
Charlie

We also talked about creating an Adobe user with this group's email
address and making it a member of the group so that posts to the
groups page automatically appear here, and using the RSS feed from
this group to populate threads back onto the groups page somewhere...

But, yes, the more interactive approach sounds like a lot of fun!
