An interesting opportunity here from the British Council. I have checked and Melissa assures me they are interested in finding people from all phases, so it’s for EAL as much as ESOL!

Cheers,

Frank

Dear all,

Please find attached information about a call for applications for resource specialists.

If interested in applying, please send your cv to Melissa...@britishcouncil.org together with an original resource that you have developed for use with learners of English, in the form of a handout that would be given to learners (no more than two pages)  The resource does not need to be based on an authentic source, but should address one of the following broad themes:

    • useful language for a particular context (e.g. “shopping”)
    • developing a particular skill (e.g. reading)
    • practising a specific grammatical point (e.g. “the past)

Please indicate on the handout the level that it is intended to be for.

Please submit the task in WORD or PDF format and put your name and the date in the filename

You do not need to provide a rationale for the resource.  Resources will be scored and shortlisted candidates will be asked to take part in a 10 minute telephone interview during which you will be asked to explain how you would use the resource in the classroom, and how you feel it could be adapted for use online.  You are advised to look at resources already available and will find links within the document attached.

Deadline – 22 May 2013

Best wishes

Melissa

From previous experience with the British Council and the broad themes, I fear they don't really get EAL and the notion that EAL is about using the curriculum to teach English as well as using English to teach the curriculum.

Hi Graham,

I think Melissa would probably broadly agree with you, which is one reason we in NALDIC are trying to work more closely with them, building on last week’s round-table discussion and seminar event at the British Council.

The BC do have a very different traditional focus that is more EFL and, if anything, ESOL, in orientation so there is inevitably some work to be done there in developing a shared perspective on EAL, but we can equally learn quite a bit from their work and expertise in the CLIL area, I think, and as the DfE becomes more and more the Department for Academies and Free Schools with EAL at best a liminal concern (they have said openly that they do not regard it as in issue), and as LA expertise is eroding fast, we need to develop new partnerships.

Also, I can imagine there are quite a few people on this list who will welcome the opportunity to earn some money doing what they are good at!

Cheers,

Frank

Absolutely. Anyone with money and an interest in language development is to be nurtured in these difficult times.

It is particularly curious that as the DfE loses interest, independent schools seem to have an increased understanding of the need for support for advanced EAL learners.

All the more reason for EAL practitioners to respond to this call - and demonstrate the distinctiveness of EAL.
