Southern Energy Network
The Southern Energy Network works to combat climate change, advance
renewable energy, and promote a smart, just energy economy by building a
diverse movement of young people in the Southeast. We organize grassroots
campaigns and provide education and training to empower new leaders and
cultivate regional progress.
The Executive Director of the Southern Energy Network (SEN) is responsible
for carrying out the mission and vision of the organization as determined in
collaboration with the Steering Committee, including implementation of
policies, leading the financial and administrative management of the
organization, and working with program staff to carry out the campaign and
program objectives. Guidance and direction is provided by the Steering
Committee and Southern Alliance for Clean Energy (SACE), which serves as the
fiscal sponsor for the Southern Energy Network. The Executive Director
officially reports to the Campus Programs Manager at SACE, although this
serves primarily a support relationship.
The Executive Director of the Southern Energy Network must be a strong,
articulate and charismatic leader with excellent outreach and fundraising
skills, especially in the areas of foundation, major donor cultivation and
grassroots fundraising. Overall knowledge and experience in nonprofit
governance, management, compliance and finances, Steering Committee support
and management, development strategy and implementation, program design and
delivery, working in coalitions, and public relations are all key elements
of the position.
*Scope and Responsibilities

The Executive Director's key responsibilities include the following:
1. Operational
The Executive Director is responsible for administration of overall
operation of the organization, including: reviewing and evaluating the
results of program activities, ensuring that continuing contractual
obligations are being fulfilled; allocating resources for greater program
effectiveness and efficiency; developing organizational and administrative
policies and program objectives.
2. Fundraising
The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing fundraising planning
and implementation, including working with the Steering Committee and staff
to identify resource needs, working with the Development Team at the
Southern Alliance for Clean Energy to coordinate proposals, supporting
development staff in researching funding sources, establishing strategies to
approach funders and appropriately following up, submitting proposals and
administrating fundraising records and documentation.
3. Steering Committee Administration and Support
The SEN Steering Committee is comprised of students and young professionals.
For many of the Steering members, this will be the first experience in this
type of organizational role. The Executive Director is responsible for
providing information, advice, and counsel to the Steering Committee
regarding the creation of policies, programs, and strategic direction for
the organization. The ED also serves as the interface between Steering
Committee and staff.
4. Financial
The Executive Director is responsible for working with key staff and
Steering Committee members to develop an annual budget and programmatic
budgets for Steering Committee approval and for prudently managing the
organization's resources within those budget guidelines. Additionally, the
Executive Director is responsible for working with SACE on internal
financial reporting as needed and required.
5. Human Resource Management
The Executive Director is responsible for taking a leadership role in
creating and supporting a well-running administrative infrastructure with a
happy, healthy and high-functioning staff team capable of maintaining and
improving SEN's already excellent reputation. The Executive Director is
responsible for ensuring that all SEN staff adhere to SACE policies and
procedures.
S/he is responsible for the overall leadership of staff in the development
and implementation of short- and long-range plans and policies and other
activities. The Executive Director will also work with key staff to
effectively manage and maximize the human resources of the organization
according to authorized personnel policies and procedures that fully conform
to current laws and regulations.
6. Community and Public Relations
The Executive Director is responsible for ensuring that SEN and its mission,
vision, programs and campaigns are presented in strong, positive ways to
relevant stakeholders, the public and media.
*Position Requirements*
• A Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience is required; an MBA or
relevant advanced degree is desirable.
• A minimum of three years relevant work experience, with at least two years
of experience with staff and financial management. Five years of relevant
work, experience managing distance staff, and experience working with
college-age youth is preferred.
• Demonstrated success in fundraising and capacity building.
• Understanding of cultural context of working in the Southeast US strongly
preferred.
• Experience planning and implementing issue-based campaigns.
• Commitment to developing a strong and diverse youth movement in the SE to
address climate and energy issues.
*ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of the principles and techniques of research grant administration,
program administration, community organization, fiscal and organizational
management, principles and practices of marketing and public relations.
The successful candidate will have the highest moral and ethical standards,
self-accountability, and be a confident, creative self-starter and a team
leader/player with excellent organizational, speaking, and writing skills.
S/he should feel comfortable speaking to large groups, managing teams,
chairing committees, and working independently; as well as bring energy,
passion and strong work ethic.
