Subject: Missionaries

Greetings

I see I have ended up in the Missionaries Guild. I can imagine this may be one of the less glamorous guilds but I am happy to be where needed most! However, There have been no posts from our Guild leaders and I just wondered what the Missionary position is? Are we going to be omnipotent or just waiting for the Great Om to give the nod at the time? I can appreciate we missionaries may be far and thinly spread ovewr The Disc but is anyone else out there??????

There has been a post from the deupties of the Missionaries,
Proselytes and Botherers
of Om, it was however over in the guild group which is where most of
the guild discussion is going on. The link for the google group post
of said post is here:
http://groups.google.com/group/dwcon_org_guilds/browse_thread/thread/...

Hopefully at least, unless gmail mangles the link on its way...

Greeting to you, too.

I am one of the Deputies for the Missionaries, Proselytes and Botherers of
Om - my fellow Deputy, Jen, has been dragged off to the far corners of the
earth (but not, so far as I know, screaming), so I will answer for both of
us.

We want to be a very inclusive Guild - we welcome anybody with a Belief to
spread. This is our draft prospectus:

"The Missionaries, Proselytes, and Botherers of Om like to think of
themselves as Bearers of Good Tidings - or Goodies to our friends. And we
want to be friends with everybody. Forget the Exqusition, this is the
Century of the Fruitbat (or so we have heard). And don't worry about which
god (or gods) you are preaching for. All we want to do is talk to people -
and Convert them. To what, we don't worry much, as long as they are
Converted. So if you, too, want to talk to everybody, join us in in
spreading the Good News - any Good News."

Now - as to what we can do: to start with, the Deputies are at the service
of the Guild - we will do what you, our Guildsmen and Guidlswomen want. I am
already planning on some Tokens of Conversion (stickers) to mark the
Converted. However we could, I think, have some games themed around the
concept of Belief. For example, how about a game of Call My Bluff - which
version of the truth do /you/ believe? Or a Lying competition - who can tell
the biggest whopper? Or the radio 4 game in which nearly every fact was
false, and you had to spot the truths?  Or a debating game in which people
have to persuade the audience of some unlikely proposition, such as that the
Earth is flat or two plus two equals five?

Or, of course, something completely different.

Alec

Or do you know the boardgame Credo?
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/1304/credo
It's where a group of people (or group of groups) try to arrive at a
Creed by means of threats, persuasion and bluff

At IDWCon last year, they played "Borogravian Nugganites", which I
understand was considered quite fun.

Rules here: http://groups.google.com/group/alt.fan.pratchett/msg/e1a4af09d53bb02f

(Although I hasten to add that you can modify it as you wish - there's
no need to treat it as gospel...)

That’s cute! We play games often. I wish I had enough people around me who would understand the reference. Though I can see how anyone with a sense of humor and can laugh at the role religion can impose in ones life, should be able to enjoy a rousing game of Borogravian Nugganites (which I am sure is an abomination unto Nuggan, especially if it involves fun and the capturing of words used in prayers by writing them down on paper with a pen or pencil (paper too is an abomination unto Nuggan, he prefers us to use corn-cobs!)).

That sounds perilously close to infringing the demarkation on the rights and duties of Seamstresses to me! Don't make us call out Dotsie and Sadie . . .

Hi

I cannot tell a lie (actually I can...but right now, I'm not)

My parents did a couple of years missionarying on the round world and
the guy they worked for tells his story of how he became to believe as
'I was walking through town when I met a beautiful busty red head who
invited me to a club with her. I thought it was my lucky day and so
went with her. When we got inside I realised it was a church and that
the busty red head was introducing me to her husband.'...'Flirty
Fishing' is the name of this technique.....and I thinks it would be an
awesome missionary/seamstress thingymajiggy....possibly a game of
magnetic fishing with fish that either have some sort of conversiony
thing on 'name 3 things that make a good sacrifice' (sausages,
virgins, small children (you knows, ones who cant fight back.)) or
something flirty 'sing 'like a virgin')

Greetings all,

I have now returned from my holy pilgrimage (and if there was every anywhere
which needed some holy-ing up, it's Mumbai...). I am glad to see we've
managed to maintain a healthy group of good souls. As Alec mentioned, we are
here to serve (and convert), and ideas on guild activities (and conversions)
would be much appreciated. You'll be rewarded in your afterlife of choice,
of course.

For the record, I will be Nix, at the con, not Jen.
