Transport department told to ensure autos keep GPS on
NEW DELHI: The Delhi government on Tuesday ordered the transport department to ensure that autorickshaws keep the GPS in meters on "switch-on" mode.
The weights and measures department should be brought in to "check correctness of fare meters installed in autorickshaws", said transport minister Ramakant Goswami.
A system of punching the driver's licence and registration certificates of autos found violating the rules will also be worked out soon, he added.
The department has also been asked to work out a schedule for installation of the GPS system in old autos. "The public needs to be educated about checking whether the GPS system is functioning in the auto they are on," added an official of the transport department.
In another attempt to rein in the rampant complaints of refusals and fare meter tampering, the government announced setting up of a committee on violations by autorickshaws.
The committee, which will have officials from the transport department, Delhi Police and DIMTS, will come up with suggestions on better monitoring of the GPS data.
It will also give suggestions on issues related to the pre-paid system and colour marking on autos that will indicate their direction of movement, thus reducing cases of refusal. The committee has been directed to start special enforcement drives at railway stations, bus terminals and the airport.
The transport department also informed that the vendor for the high security registration plates (HSRP), Rosemerta, has been asked to inform vehicle owners about the date of affixation of the plates in writing by putting a stamp on the fee receipt.
