Friends,

Sharing this small event held today to involve children with nature.

The children gathered today at the water body at Sector-23 in Pochanpur village.Mr. P.K.Datta gave a small presentation on butterflies and I  told them about the importance of a water body and natural wilderness.

After that, the children engaged in activity of cleaning the pond and its surroundings. A lot of plastic litter was picked and disposed

 in a dustbin. Some older boys went into the water to take out the plastic from inside the pond.

Then, the children engaged in activity of bird watching. Some interesting birds that were seen were: large billed crow, Eurasian Golden Oriale, Indian Grey Hornbill, paddyfield pipit, red wattled lapwing (Tatiri), Red vented bulbul, Jungle babbler, common babbler, Indian robin, red colored dove, rose ringed parakeet (parrot),plain prinia,purple sunbird, house sparrow, Asian Pied starling. Bank Myna, common myna, Black drongo.

Rakesh Kumar, a young graduate from Pochanpur village is studying the birds literature for last few months and was helpful in locating and identifying the birds.

We thank you Anil Rajput for lending his binoculars. This was the key to generate interest among the children to see birds.

Also saw nest of various birds on the trees of Babool, bargad and peepal. Saw dragonflies hovering over the water body.

This is the same place which was reported by Mr. Kaushik 

about the tree roots exposed and it is now saved with the help

of DDA Horticulture department under the expert guidance of

Mr. Diwan Singh to bring it back in the natural form , the water

pond is attracting lots of birds.

I am also very fond of bird watching.  By the way, have you seen sparrows? I mean house sparrows, which we earlier used to see them making their nests somewhere at the top corners of a room or varandah or ventilators or even on the top-cup of a ceiling fan, etc.  These days I do not find any sparrows.  Why so?  Also please let me know the exact location as I would like to visit once, may be on Sunday.

Very true - Sparrow - the little bird !! Where have they disappeared. We can only see pigeons and little of crow now a days.

Don't know what is the reason. Do we have any bird watcher who can highlight and update the forum. I am sure every one would like to know what happened to this sweet little bird.....

Anilji has suggested that right time for bird watching is 5 P.M.

And its true that house sparrows have almost vanished. Something needs to be done. Firstly, lets look for some research on the subject and then take action.

For the past couple of weeks Rakesh Kumar with his borrowed binoculars and
relentless patience has been busy tracking and keeping record of the
varieties and number of birds that have begun to flock to a small water
body inside a park in Dwarka's Pochanpur village.
The water body that has become home to the winged visitors has been revived
in a park maintained by the Delhi Development Authority. How the water body
was revived is a story in itself: “There are two very old trees in the park
that needed urgent attention, the roots had begun to show and there was a
danger that these trees might fall. A few residents of Dwarka Sector 23 and
some villagers approached the DDA for help. We were allowed to dig and
cover the roots with soil from around the trees. When we were doing this
work we realised that the water body that stretches between the trees had
dried up and was in danger of being lost forever,” said Diwan Singh of
non-government organisation Natural Heritage First who has been mobilising
support for preservation of the water body.
Water from a nearby hand-pump was used to fill the water body and within 48
hours the visitors began to arrive. “I have spotted 26 types of birds here.
There are herons, parrots, woodpeckers, golden oriole, Indian grey
hornbill, paddyfield pipit, red-wattled lapwing and tailorbirds. Most of
the birds have begun nesting and it is for the first time that we have seen
such a variety of birds here,” said Rakesh, a resident of the Pochanpur
Village.
The water body, known as ‘Naya Johad', had a rich collection of herbs and
medicinal plants till recently. The gram sabha land on which it stands that
has now been converted into a park by the DDA was also home to peacocks
that can no longer be spotted here.
“Ever since development of Dwarka began, the DDA created several parks, but
a large number of water bodies began to disappear for lack of maintenance.
We are now fighting for the preservation of water bodies and have
petitioned the DDA to ensure that they are left as a natural habitat and
not changed into a park,” said Mr. Singh.
The residents have written to the DDA to ensure that no construction or
development work is carried out within a 50-metre radius of the Naya Johad
water body and the natural heritage is allowed to flourish. “We don't need
more parks, they are just cosmetic, ornamental greens; we need a natural
wilderness. Parks are a waste of natural resources like water and do not
sustain ecosystems. Water bodies and natural greens on the other hand have
been a demonstrated space for the sustenance of the flora and the fauna,”
pointed out Mr. Singh.
The Naya Johad in the park needs about 1,000 litres of water and Mr. Singh
said rainwater from nearby catchments can be used for the purpose.
“We filled the water body, which spans across a few metres, and realised
that the water table in the area has fallen so significantly that the water
body went dry in just a few days. We now want the 80-year-old water body
that finds a mention in the revenue records to be left as a natural habitat
for birds and plantation. We want to prepare a catchment area management
plan so that rain water during the monsoons can flow directly to it. The
surrounding area has a favourable terrain with park, school and planned
colony. It would not be a difficult task to manage the catchments. We don't
want any concretisation of the area around the water body, like boundary
walls or slopes as that obstructs the flow of water and we have also
requested the DDA for de-silting, so that water recharge is good and the
water body retains more water,” said Sudershan Kaushik, a resident of
Dwarka who is part of the initiative.
The residents also want the DDA to carry out plantation of local species of
trees around the water body. “Trees like neem, peepal and bargad are good
for nesting and we should grow these rather than those trees that are alien
to the country and the birds alike,” said Mr. Singh who has begun taking
school children from the nearby areas for bird watching sessions to the
park.
“One does not expect to see birds in the middle of an urban concrete
jungle, but this water body revival has also revived that hope,” said Mr.
Singh.
