NEW DELHI:
Delhi Jal Board claims to be in a comfortable situation this
summer on
water availability
but on ground the situation might not be to the Congress-led
government's liking. Its plan to provide water to at least 126
unauthorized colonies on the list notified for regularization will hit a
roadblock unless there is resolution on the
Munak canal issue.
Despite infrastructure having been extended to all these colonies,
supply to only 30-40 might be possible by the year end unless an
additional 80 million gallons per day from Haryana comes through.
"As of now 800 unauthorized colonies, part of the recent regularization
notification, are getting water to some extent. Infrastructure in
around 126 has been installed and we are confident of supplying water to
all these by the end of 2013 if we get the additional water from Munak.
Otherwise we may be able to cover about 30-40," said a senior DJB
official.
Delhi government has spent around Rs 2,000 crore in
setting up infrastructure based on the additional 80mgd Munak water,
including Rs 364 crore paid to Haryana for the construction of the
canal. The canal, to bring water from Haryana into Delhi, is complete
and is being used on the Haryana side. Delhi chief minister Sheila
Dikshit is waiting for intervention from the Prime Minister and the
ministry of water resources even as Haryana is still insistent that
Delhi is getting more than its fair share of water from the state.
"There is no question of giving Delhi 80mgd water that will be saved on
using the newer Munak canal. We are already giving them more than their
share. Delhi has also created a cut in the canal at Iradatnagar which
as soon as it shuts, we will extend the Munak supply to the capital,"
said a Haryana irrigation department official.
Large parts of
south Delhi's unauthorized areas will be covered by the Dwarka water
treatment plant which too is waiting for Munak water. So far 5mgd is
being supplied to DDA for Dwarka's consumption but other colonies are
getting tanker supply
DJB has made arrangement to increase
water production by 8-9mgd this summer. The Bhagirathi water treatment
plant will have additional recycling of 4mgd while 2mgd more will take
place at the Wazirabad water treatment plant.
"This will yield
360 lakh litres per day which should benefit, in some way or the other,
7-8 lakh people. We have also managed to plug some major leakage points
in our system. In the past 2.5 years, we tacked 30-odd major points in
the Sonia Vihar network and have finished work just last week," said B M
Dhaul, member (water) DJB.
