Ban defaulters of government-dues and accommodations from contesting elections
It refers to RTI response from Election Commission wherein it is stated that presently there is no rule prohibiting contesting elections by persons having defaulted earlier as a Parliamentarian or state-legislator in respect of government-dues like that of water, electricity, telephone, or air-travel in case of entitled ones like former Prime Ministers.
It is a matter of shame that we have former Prime Ministers also who get re-elected even after being defaulters in respect of air-travel dues, what to talk about hundreds of former Parliamentarians and state-legislators who contest elections despite being defaulters for such dues. Already crores of rupees are pending towards former Parliamentarians for such dues, a major part of is towards deceased ones.
Likewise is the situation in respect of government-accommodations where government waived off rupees two-crores rent-bill towards Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar. Tendency to keep occupying government-accommodations after losing entitlement is quite common amongst Parliamentarians.
Since government cannot be sincere to abolish the menace, Election Commission should impose a ban on contesting any election by persons defaulting in respect of government dues and accommodations during their earlier tenure. Any intervention by government is likely to be struck down by courts.
