Hi,

I am Rajender, and I am doing my final-year masters at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, India. I am interested in working with DuraCloud in the Google Summer of Code this year. I wanted to work on 'Eucalyptus Integration' project for DuraCloud, as I have experience with Amazon S3, and Eucalyptus Private cloud stack. I have gone through the architecture of DuraCloud, and I am quite interested to contribute to it during this summer.

During my summer internship at Newcastle University, UK during May-July 2009 under the guidance of Prof. Aad van Moorsel, I have designed and conceptualized an unified architecture for verifying the SLA's promised by various cloud service providers. During this internship, I had worked with Amazon EC2, S3 and Google App Engine, and addressed the security issues which affect the reliability of cloud applications.

In my master's thesis, we have addressed the problem of heterogeneity posed by different interfaces of different cloud service providers. The paper 'An Architecture for cross-cloud system management' addresses this issue. We have realized and implemented this architecture considering a public cloud like Amazon EC2, S3 and a private cloud like Eucalyptus. I have built the Eucalyptus Private Cloud as a part of it.

Regarding Eucalyptus Integration for DuraCloud, Eucalyptus has 'Walrus' storage service analogous to Amazon S3, and it exposes S3 interface as you have mentioned in the project description. I had a brief look at the code of DuraCloud. It is likely that we can subclass/extend the existing S3 provider, and make the changes respective to Eucalyptus Storage provider (Walrus).

To prove out the integration of DuraCloud with Eucalyptus, will I be given an Eucalyptus Private Cloud implementation from your side or should I implement it locally and then work on it? I just want to be clear about the project goals, so that I can write the application well.

I would like to have some suggestions regarding the above project idea.

Thank you for your time.

Best Regards,
Rajender.

Hello Rajender,
Thank you for your interest in the DuraCloud Google Summer of Code
Eucalyptus Integration project. It sounds like your experience would
make for a perfect fit.
There has been repeated community interest in adding the ability to
connect private cloud storage underneath DuraCloud. However, the
storage adapter does not currently exist. The primary goal of the
project would be to develop and document the
DuraCloud/Eucalyptus(walrus) storage adapter. Additionally, it would
be useful to probe the limitations of such an integration.
In answer to your question, we do not have an Eucalyptus
implementation against which to create the adapter. So if you do, it
would make the most sense to develop against that.
We look forward to receiving your submitted application.
Andrew
