Ubuntu / Lubuntu Installfest

First of all, if you want to post something different from the last post, *please start a new topic*, instead of simply replying to the last email.

I have just upgraded all my desktops and servers to 12.04 without a hitch.  Are you trying to install Ubuntu on a desktop, laptop or netbook?

If it is a desktop, it shouldn't have any problems.  If you are talking about a laptop or netbook, please bring it along and I an very happy to help.

The Thursday session is already occupied by a soldering class.

However how many of you would like some help on putting Linux on your laptop / netbooks?

If it is a laptop or netbook, what is your model?  Does your computer have a CD drive?  I have already prepared live USBs for 32-bit systems (Lubuntu, a lightweight version of Ubuntu) and 64-bit systems

If necessary, I can also provide 64-bit Lubuntu USBs / CDs.

If we have sufficient demand, it would be great if we can organize an Installfest on the coming Wednesday, that is just for people to sort out Linux installation problems.  And I will make myself available during the Installfest if it goes ahead.

Finally, please please please don't give up on Linux.......

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone else has upgraded/installed this version and any troubles they have had with it. I've had a few so far and I am seriously considering sticking with Windows 7 as I'm finding I have very little time for programming these days(please forgive my absence at maker-space the last month, my boss decided to go on holiday and not organize enough cover for her shifts, so I've been 50 odd hours a week and absolutely knackered)

I guess what I'm looking for here is someone to talk me into not giving up!

To answer you Blair, I can't program on Windows as I very easily get distracted by the $500 worth of steam games and other things, I do prefer using Ubuntu, it just seems to be difficult this time around to get it up and running.

I'm determined not to give up, the main problem I guess this time around was trying to set aside a decent block of time to work out any kinks that I've had getting 12.04 up and running, but I'm going to stay with it and work it out

Anyone keen on the installfest tommorrow? I may be occupied in the
evening, but I could open up during the daytime if someone wanted to
help me install Debian with a small server on a netbook. Because our
internet access is so limited at the workshop however, I would also
invite people to an installfest at my house (westwood - 14 minute drive,
30 minute bus). On general principles however, I'd suggest that people
install distros that have been stable for 6 mo. or so, especially if
they're linux newbies like me.

I will only be available in the evenings, as in the daytime, I have got a 3rd year telecommunication lab, and a 4th year Linux kernel development lab to teach at the University, this is why I initially suggested to use the DunLug Wednesday evening timeslot.

I have prepared a couple of Ubuntu / Lubuntu 12.04 USB sticks...  Generally Ubuntu have much better support on things like laptop/netbook.  However I can download a Debian CD/DVD  and bring it here if desired.

If we were to conduct any installfests at Makerspace, all 3G network will be turned off, to prevent accidental data usage :)

With regards to sticking to LTS releases and only install 6 months after..... this generally only applies in servers.  For desktop computers and laptop, you usually do want to use the latest release to get the most up-tp-date applications, and hardware support :)

In my department, we usually put on a new Fedora version once, or twice a year on the desktop machines.

we have a portable mirror (so we can avoid going to the 'net) it doesn't have
the new LTS oin it, it's probably time to sync it and bring it back

My university has full mirror of Ubuntu and Debian than I can copy into the USB drive without incurring internet charges.  So if you want a particular mirror, just tell me and I will get it for you :)
