Hey,
Does anyone know of a good place in town for purchasing small
quantities of metal?
I'm after sheet metal, less than a square meter at a time, tubing, few
meters at a time and solid metal rod, less than a meter. Mostly steel,
will occasionally be after aluminium.
Cheers,
Nic

for small amounts of stuff you're kind of stuck with Bunnings/Mitre10 who are
expensive

But you probably should check out Steel and Tube (down by the wharf - they
have another office near Bunnings who are good for bolts/etc in bulk) - their
prices for more than you need may be lower than buying just what you need at
the big box stores

Have you tried Alrich Aluminum in Kaikorai Valley and Fletcher Steel
opposite Bunnings?

Yea, you'll have trouble getting good prices for such small quantities.
If you go up to 4m of rod, for instance, you'll have much better luck.
At those lengths, most places will (quickly/roughly) cut into smaller
sections for you for free so you can transport it.

Mico Metals is another good source if you increase your quantities,
they're at the end of Otaki St (near Edgar Center/Bunnings).

If you go into Fletcher Steel, a word of warning: WATCH YOUR HEAD. A large crane hook narrowly missed my head because the guy operating it wasn't watching what he was doing.

Or Roofing Solutions at Burnside?

Thanks for all of the suggestions folks.

Had tried Steel and Tube once in the past but the minimum order amount was more than I was looking for.

I'll give Fletcher Steel a try. Thinking Roofing Solutions could be a good place for offcuts perhaps.

I really wish it was cheaper to order from onlinemetals.com

Hey guys,
Not really an active member, but I saw this post so I thought I'd offer here:

I work at Steel & Tube Fastening Systems and can offer the capscrews, threaded rod, bolts etc, can also _help_ sort your steel from my other branch (Sorry only 6.5m lengths I think, maybe a group purchase?) - mind you this is some pretty sharp margins in Steel in this day and age - odds are you might not pay much more on a cash sale at any of the steel outfits but I'm more than happy to price.

Any queries feel free to give me text and mention the makerspace: Gareth 0226989713

Cheers,

In addition to the aforementioned places, for small quantities, you also
might consider rummaging around at Reitvelds in Kenmure. I've often
gone there for small quantities of brass, copper, steel, and aluminium
for turning, but they also have varying amounts of small sheets or
offcuts from time to time. The magpie in charge will overcharge and
avoids dickering, but it's still often cheaper than new. You also might
consider (in person) visiting Allan's sheet metal and Farra's steel
division. Both companies produce a fair number of offcuts from sheet
that gets recycled after being sheared or laser-cut to order and
depending who is upon the floor you might get a few bits for little
cash. Milmeq engineering has also been helpful when I wanted a small
quantity of aluminum sheet, if you can keep the dimension to a simple
shear job and are willing to pay at least $30 or so, then a lot of such
places don't mind small-order customers.

Cheers,
Brian

I'm not an active member here but if you just want something that
doesn't have to be too nice I've taken the sheet metal from old
appliances before. I took apart a dryer the other day which had a good
amount of steel on it, and the drum was made from stainless steel
which I've cut up and was lucky to find! Just my 2 cents worth.
